In orbit, racing along at five miles a second, the space shuttle goes around the
Earth once every 90 minutes. At this speed I found that I had to keep my nose pressed
to the window all the time; otherwise I couldn’t recognize which places we were
passing. The world below simply changes too fast.

Some of civilization’s unhappy effects on the environment are easily noticed from
orbit. Oil shines on the surface of the Persian Gulf. Trees damaged by pollution
to the forests of central Europe. Some cities cannot be seen clearly when they are
viewed through smog. The effects are easier to see now than they were ten year ago.
An astronaut who has flown in both Skylab and the space reported that the horizon
didn’t seem quite as clear in 1983 as it had 1973.
