<b>PERIOD 2: ALTHOUGH, DESPITE/ IN SPITE OF</b>

<b>I. Grammar:Connectors: although, despite/in spite of</b>

We use although, despite/in spite of to express contrast between two pieces of information in
the same sentences. We use although before a clause and despite/ in spite of before a noun or a
noun phrase.

<i>Example:</i>

<i>Although he is so young, he performs excellently.</i>

<i>Despite/ In spite of being so young, he performs excellently.</i>

DESPITE và IN SPITE OF đều là giới từ thể hiện sự tương phản giữa hai vế mệnh đề, và
thường được dịch là “mặc dù”. Hai từ này đều có nghĩa đối lập với “because of”. Tuy nhiên,
cách dùng của các từ này có sự khác biệt rõ rệt. IN SPITE OF và DESPITE được dùng với vai
trò như một giới từ, đứng trước danh từ, cụm danh từ, danh động từ, hoặc V-ing.

Eg. <b>Despite/In spite of</b> his busy schedule, he still spent a day to visit my family.

Cũng mang nghĩa là ”mặc dù” nhưng ALTHOUGH, THOUGH, EVEN THOUGH được dùng
với vai trò là liên từ, liên kết hai mệnh đề chỉ sự nhượng bộ. Do vậy, chúng có vị trí ở đầu câu
hoặc giữa hai mệnh đề. Vị trí khác nhau cũng đem lại sắc thái nhấn mạnh trong câu khác nhau
nữa. Khi đứng ở đầu câu, though giúp câu nói trang trọng hơn so với khi nó đứng giữa hai
mệnh đề. Để nhấn mạnh hơn nữa về sự tương phản giữa hai mệnh đề, bạn có thể sử dụng cấu
trúc even though thay cho though hay although.

Eg: <b>Although</b> his schedule is so busy, he still spent a day to visit my family.

<b>* Form: </b>

<b> Despite/ In spite of + N/N phrase/Ving, S + V+….</b>
<b>= S + V +……+ despite/ in spite of + N/ N phrase/ Ving</b>
<b>= Although + S + V + ….., S + V+…</b>
