<span class='text_page_counter'>(4)</span><div class='page_container' data-page=4>

The sun today is a yellow dwarf star. It is fueled by thermonuclear reactions near its center that
convert

hydrogen to helium. The sun has existed in its present state for about 4 billion, 600 million years
and is thousands

of times larger than the earth.

By studying other stars, astronomers can predict what of the rest of the Sun's life will be like.
About 5

billion years from now, the core of the sun will shrink and become hotter. The surface
temperature will fall. The

higher temperature of the center will increase the rate of thermonuclear reactions. The outer

regions of the Sun

will expand appropriately 35 million miles, about the distance to Mercury, which is the closest
planet to the Sun.

The Sun will be then a red giant star. Temperatures on the Earth will become too hot for life to
exist.

Once the Sun has used up its thermonuclear energy as a red giant, it will begin to shirk. After it
shirks to

the size of the Earth, it will become a white dwarf star. The Sun may throw off huge amounts of
gases in violent

eruptions called nova explosion as it changes from a red giant to a white dwarf.

After billions of years as a white dwarf, the Sun will have lost its heat. Such a star is called a
black dwarf.

After the Sun has become a black dwarf, the Earth will be dark and cold. If any atmosphere
remains there, it will

have frozen onto the Earth's surface.

1. What is the primary purpose of this passage?
A. to alert people to the dangers of posed by the sun.
B. To discuss conditions on Earth in the far future.
C. To present a theory about the red giant stars.
D. To describe changes that the Sun will go through.
2. It can be inferred from the passage that the Sun

A. It approximately haftway through its life as a yellow dwarf.
B. has been in existence for 10 billion years.

C. is rapidly changing in size and brightness.

D. will continue as a yellow dwarf for another 10 billion years.

3. What will probably be the first stage of change as the Sun becomes a red giant?
A. Its core will cool off and use less fuel

</div>
<span class='text_page_counter'>(5)</span><div class='page_container' data-page=5>

4. According to the passage, which of the following best describes the sequence of the stages
that the Sun will

probably pass through?

A. Yellow dwarf, white drarf, red giant, black giant.
B. Red giant, white dwarf, red drarf, nova explosion.
C. Yellow dwarf, red giant, white dwarf, black dwarf.
D. White dwarf, red giant, black dwarf, a yellow dwarf.

I. Read the following passage, and then choose the best answer from A, B, C or D.
Although they are an inexpensive supplier of vitamins, minerals, and high-quality protein,
eggs also contain a high level of blood cholesterol, one of the major causes of heart disease.
One egg

yolk, in fact, contains a little more than two- thirds of suggested daily cholesterol limit. This
knowledge has caused egg sales to plummet in recent years, which in turn has brought about
the

development of several alternatives to eating regular eggs. One alternative is to eat substitute
eggs.

These eggs substitutes are not really eggs, but they look somewhat like eggs when they are
cooked.

They have advantage of having lower cholesterol rates, and they can be scrambled or used in
baking.

</div>
<span class='text_page_counter'>(10)</span><div class='page_container' data-page=10>

produced by hens that are fed low-fat diets consisting of ingredients such as canola oil, flaw,
and rice bran. In spite of their diets, however, these hens produce eggs that contain the same
amount of

cholesterol as regular eggs. Yet, the producers of these eggs claim that eating their eggs will
not

raise the blood cholesterol in humans.

Egg producers claim that their product has been portrayed unfairly. They cite scientific
studies to back up their claim. And, in fact, studies on the relationships between eggs and
human

cholesterol levels have brought mixed results. It may be that it is not the type of eggs that is the
main

determinant of cholesterol but the person who is eating the eggs. Some people may be more
sensitive to cholesterol derived from food than other people. In fact, there is evidence that
certain

dietary fats stimulate the body’s production of blood cholesterol. Consequently, while it is still
makes sense to limit one’s intake of eggs, even designer eggs, it seems that doing this without
regulating dietary fat will probably not help reduce the blood cholesterol level.

41. What is the main purpose of this passage?

A. to inform people about the relation between eggs and cholesterol
B. to convince people to eat "designer" eggs and egg substitutes

C. to persuade people that eggs are unhealthy and should not be eaten
D. to introduce the idea that dietary fats increase the blood cholesterol level
42. According to the passage, which of the following is a cause of heart disease?
A. minerals B. cholesterol C. vitamins D. canola oil

43. According to the passage, what has been the cause for changes in the sale of eggs?
A. dietary changes in hens B. decreased production

C. increasing price D. concerns about cholesterol

44. According to the passage, one egg yolk contains approximately what fraction of suggested
daily

limit for human consumption of cholesterol?
A. 1/3 B. 1/2 C. 2/3 D. 3/4

We are descendants of the ice age. Periods of glaciation have spanned the whole of human
existence

for the past 2 million years. The rapid melting of the continental glaciers at the end of the last
ice age spurred one of the most dramatic climate changes in the history of the planet. During
this interglacial time, people

</div>

animal husbandry. Over the past few thousand years, the Earth’s climate has been
extraordinarily beneficial, and humans have prospered exceedingly well under a benign
atmosphere.

Ice ages have dramatically affected life on Earth almost from the very beginning. It is even
possible

that life itself significantly changed the climate. All living organisms pull carbon dioxide out of the
atmosphere and eventually store it in sedimentary rocks within the Earth’s crust. If too much
carbon dioxide

is lost, too much heat escapes out into the atmosphere. This can cause the Earth too cool
enough for glacial

ice to spread across the land.

In general the reduction of the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has been equalized by

the

input of carbon dioxide from such events as volcanic eruptions. Man, however, is upsetting the
equation by

burning fossil fuels and destroying tropical rain forests, both of which release stored carbon
dioxide. This

energizes the greenhouse effect and causes the Earth to warm. If the warming is significant
enough, the polar

ice caps eventually melt.

The polar ice caps drive the atmospheric and oceanic circulation systems. Should the ice caps
melt,

warm tropical waters could circle the globe and make this a very warm, inhospitable planet.
Over the past century, the global sea level has apparently risen upwards of 6 inches, mainly
because

of the melting of glacial ice. If present warming trends continue, the seas could rise as much as
6 feet by the

next century. This could flood coastal cities and fertile river deltas, where half the human
population lives.

Delicate wetlands, where many marine species breed, also would be reclaimed by the sea. In
addition, more

frequent and severe storms would batter coastal areas, adding to the disaster of the higher

seas.

The continued melting of the great ice sheets in polar regions could cause massive amounts of
ice to

crash into the ocean. This would further raise the sea level and release more ice, which could
more than

double the area of sea ice and increase correspondingly the amount of sunlight reflected back
into space. The

E. READING (20 ms)

Read this magazine article and do the exercises that follow.
THE FUTURE OF COMPUTERS

1 It is becoming more and more difficult to imagine what our life would be like without
computers. They have become essential everywhere: air travel depends on them, the

publication of books and magazines depends on them, most communication systems cannot
function without them. Computer chips even control your fridge, ___________________ (A).
2 Computers can already recognise people’s voices, fingerprints and even eyes. They can
make calculations a million times faster than the human brain. They can store vast amounts of
information and “remember” it within seconds. They can read out texts for people with eyesight
problems. _____________________ (B) They can produce films, music and artwork. They can
play chess and defeat human chess champions.

3 Still, computers are not able to think creatively and cannot feel. They depend on human
programmers and, although they can evaluate information according to logical rules, these rules
have to be programmed into them. No computer is capable of having an original thought,

______________________________ (C).

4 However, the processing power of computers is doubling every 12 months. In thirty years’

time, an average home computer will be as powerful as 1,000 human brains. This will give
people the opportunity to use computers to do more and more of the jobs that only humans can
do at present and might mean an easier life for all of us. On the other hand, it is highly likely
that by then, ___________________________ (D). The machines of the future will be able to
think and feel just as humans do: they will be able to feel happy or sad and to express their
thoughts and feelings whenever they want to.

5 People will be able to scan their brains into computers so that the machines of the future
______________________ (E) but not human bodies. And it is possible that they will feel the
need for a body and, as a result, become sad and depressed. There is no knowing what they
might choose to do then, but we can only hope it will be for the best.

I. Match these headings with the paragraphs of the article: (10 marks)
a Computers in the future

b Worries about the future

</div>
<span class='text_page_counter'>(37)</span><div class='page_container' data-page=37>

II. Now put each of these phrases in the right place in the article. (10 marks)
1 but most human beings make millions of such thoughts in their lifetime.
2 They can talk.

3 will actually have human brains,

4 computers will have become fully conscious.
5 television, microwave oven, lift and air conditioner.
