A. HỆ THỐNG LÝ THUYẾT

Trạng từ chỉ tần suất (Adverb of frequency): Định nghĩa và cách dùng

Đây là loại trạng từ được sử dụng khi bạn muốn nói về mức độ thường xuyên của một hành
động nào đó. Bạn có thể bắt gặp nhiều trạng từ chỉ tần suất trong thì hiện tại đơn để diễn tả các
hành động mang tính lặp đi lặp lại.

Có hai cách sử dụng thông dụng nhất của trạng từ chỉ tần suất:

Trạng từ chỉ tần suất dùng để chỉ mức độ thường xuyên của hành động được nói đến
trong câu.

Ví dụ: My mother often goes to the supermarket in the evening.
(Mẹ tôi thường đi siêu thị vào buổi tối.)

My father rarely goes to bed late.
(Bố tôi hiếm khi đi ngủ muộn.)

Trạng từ chỉ tần suất sử dụng trong câu trả lời của câu hỏi “How often”
Ví dụ: How often do you go to the movie theater?

I think I go to the movie theater quite frequently, about three times a week.
(Bạn có hay đến rạp phim khơng?

Tớ nghĩ là khá thường xuyên đấy, khoảng tầm 3 lần một tuần.)
How often does he visit you?

I’m not sure, he barely does.

(Anh ấy có thường xuyên thăm cậu không?

Tớ không chắc nữa, anh ấy hiếm khi thăm tớ lắm.)
Các trạng từ chỉ tần suất thông dụng nhất

Dưới đây là bảng các trạng từ chỉ tần suất trong tiếng Anh, sắp xếp theo độ thường xuyên giảm
dần.

100% Always Luôn ln, lúc nào cũng, suốt, hồi

90% Usually, Normally Thường xuyên

80% Generally Thông thường, theo lệ

70% Often, Frequently Thường

50% Sometimes Thỉnh thoảng

30% Occasionally, Seldom Thỉnh thoảng lắm, thảng hoặc, tùy lúc

10% Rarely Hầu như hiếm khi

5% Hardly ever, Barely, Scarcely Hiếm khi, ít có, bất thường

0% Never Không bao giờ

Trong một câu hoàn chỉnh, trạng từ chỉ tần suất thường đứng ở 4 vị trí: trước động từ thường,
sau động từ to-be, sau trợ động từ, và ở đầu hay cuối câu.

Trạng từ chỉ tần suất đứng ở trước động từ thường

Ví dụ:

I never smoke.

(Tơi khơng bao giờ hút thuốc.)
They often eat out.

(Họ thường đi ăn ngoài.)

Trạng từ chỉ tần suất đứng sau động từ to be
Ví dụ:

Susie is often on time, but today she seems to be running a bit late.

(Susie thường khá đúng giờ, nhưng có vẻ hơm nay cơ ấy đi muộn thì phải.)
Dave is always looking down on other people, it’s so rude.

(Dave luôn coi thường người khác, thật bất lịch sự.)
Trạng từ chỉ tần suất đứng sau trợ động từ

Ví dụ:

They have never been to England.
(Họ chưa bao giờ đến Anh.)

I don’t often do this, but I’ll make an exception this time.

(Tôi không thường làm việc này đâu, nhưng lần này là ngoại lệ nhé.)
Trạng từ chỉ tần suất đứng ở đầu hoặc cuối câu

Khi sử dụng với mục đích nhấn mạnh, trạng từ chỉ tần suất (trừ always, hardly, ever và never)
có thể được đảo lên đầu câu, trước trợ động từ. Khi nó đứng ở cuối câu, sắc thái nghĩa không
thay đổi so với khi đứng ở trong câu.

Ví dụ:

Usually my father doesn’t let me hang out too late.
(Thường thì bố tớ không cho tớ đi chơi muộn quá đâu.)
He never can understand how I feel.

(Anh ấy sẽ chẳng bao giờ hiểu được tớ cảm thấy như thế nào đâu.)
I don’t read this kind of stories often.

(Tớ không hay đọc mấy câu chuyện kiểu này lắm.)
