<b>Teaching Journal 1:</b>

Student: Hoàng Thị Hoài Giang

The first class I observed is a listening skill class at CENLET Centre at Hai
Ba Trung High School. The teacher used Life-line (Pre- Intermediate). The lesson
was about listening and speaking in a clothes shop. It’s from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm
on 24th September, 2010 with 40 students at level B. Through this lesson, I can

learn some good things; also there is something that can be improved.

The first one is that the teacher had an interesting warm-up activity. She
raised exciting questions to involve students more in her lecture. So students were
quite involved in her lesson from beginning. But the pre-teach vocabulary was
quite different from those I have learnt at college. The teacher just wrote down the
new words on black board and translated them into Vietnamese. It is better for her
to elicit new words and then explain them, give real objects or using posters …
Also the choral repetition is not good enough. She just model one time for both
easy and difficult words. She can model more than one more time for all of new
words especially for long and difficult ones.

Secondly, the way she used blackboard is good. She had a clear, loud voice.
She used simple language that was suitable for her students’ level. Also she had a
balance of using English and Vietnamese but, I think, she is not a good model of
English. It seemed there is also more dialect in her voice.

Thirdly, she is an enthusiastic teacher. But it became her weakness. This
made her very teacher-centered. She should let her students to have more time on
working in pairs or in groups. Also she can receive the answers from different

students instead of explaining all things for her students.

Fourthly, she had a helpful activity when giving students useful expressions
for speaking in the post- listening stage instead of asking them to star to making

conversations. She elicited and suggested students to give questions and answers
as if they had been in clothes shops. I think this worked enough for her students.

However, she was very teacher- centered. This made her class not keep
going on to the end. Also the way she let the students listen to the tape was not
good. Instead of letting the tape going, the teacher often used “pause” button in
while- listening stage. This can help her students in note-taking but it is not a good
method for listening. In addition, when checking the answers, the teacher just gave
comments for eight first questions, not for all of the questions. She had a good
thing is that she asked the students to guess to correct order but she did not give to
her students how to guess the right correct, just asking them to guess the order.
This could be very helpful if the teacher give them the tips (the guide for guessing
and for both listening).
