MANDI’S MAKING FRIENDS

My name’s Mandi. Three months ago, I went to disco where I met a boy called Tom. I guessed he was older
than me, but I liked him and thought it didn’t matter. We danced a couple of times, then we chatted. He said
he was 18, then asked how old I was. I told him I was 16. I thought that if I told him my real age, he wouldn’t
want to know me, as I’m only 13.

After the dicso we arranged to meet the following weekend. The next Saturday we went for a burger and
had a real laugh. Afterwards he walked me to my street and kissed me goodnight. Things went really well. We
see each other a couple of times a week, but I’ve had to lie to my parents about where I’m going and who
with. I’ve always got on with them, but I know if they found out how Tom was they’d stop me seeing him.
Now I really don’t know what to do. I can’t go on lying to my parents every time I go out, and Ton keeps
asking he can’t come around to my house. I’m really worried and I need some advice.

It needs planning, though. First, make a guest list, with different kinds of people and a mixture of women

Then plan their menu. Include a first course, a choice of main courses and a dessert, plus lots of people’s
favourite drinks.

The next thing to do is the shopping. Make sure buy more than enough of everything, and that someone
can help you carry it!

get hungry if they have to wait. Serve the delicious meal, sit down with your guests and have a good time –

The nuclear family, consisting of a mother, father, and their children may be more an American ideal than
an American reality. Of course, the so-called traditional American family was always more varied than we

The most recent government statistics reveal that only about one third of all current American families fit
the traditional mold and another third consists of married couples who either have no children or have none
still living at home. Of the final one third, about 20 percent of the total number of American households is
single people, usually women over sixty-five years of age. A small percentage, about 3 percent of the total,
consists of unmarried people who choose to live together; and the rest, about 7 percent, are single, usually
divorced parents, with at least one child.

am restless and I always feel that there is something missing, even though it is sometimes hard for me to
decide what it is.

Of course, the sports I like are the ones which need water – sailing, rowing and swimming. It is possible
to swim in small swimming pools, but rowing and sailing are impossible without a lot of water. Rowing is
best in a river and sailing on the sea or a big lake, but one can do some sailing on a river and one can certainly
row on a lake or the sea when the weather is good.

Of the three sports – swimming, rowing and sailing – I like rowing best because it is the easiest to
continue during the winter, when the water is too cold for comfortable swimming and the sea is often too
rough for sailing. Even on the coldest day one row, only ice on the water or thick fog can stop one. Sometimes
it is so cold when I go out rowing that drop of water freeze wherever they fall. In such weather, it is not very
pleasant to swim as one cannot stay in the water very long. However, when is rowing, one gets warmer the
longer one goes on.
