Exercise 1: There are ten mistakes in the passage. Find out and correct them.
In Britian there is a holiday now which people called Mother’s Day. In the old days
many girls from worked- class families in towns and cities and from farmers’ families in
the country work in rich houses. They had to do all the housework and their working day
was usually very long, they often worked on Sundays, too.
Once a year, it was usually on Sunday in March, they could visit their mothers. They
went home on that day and brought presents for their mothers and other members of their
families. They could stay at home only one day, and then they went back tho their work.
People call that day Mothering Day or Mothering Sunday.
Later wokers at the factories and girls who workedin the houses of rich families
received one free day a week, and Mothering Day became Mother’s Day. It is the last
Sunday in March.

Almost all our energy comes from oil, coal, and natural gas. We call them fossil
fuels. The earth’s fossil fuels are running out. What will happen when there is no oil, coal,

Scientists are trying to find and use other alternative sources of energy. We can use
energy from the sun, the wind, and the water.
Solar energy is unlimited. The supplies all the energy used to grow plants, to
evaporate water for rain, and to maintain the temprature of the planet. All are necessary for
human life. If we’re ableto collect solar energy, we’ll be sure have this abundant source of
power.
Another source of energy from the nature is the wind. Wind power is clean and
plentiful. Energy from the wind has been used for centuries to move ships, grind grain,
pump water and do other forms of work. In more recent times, wind has been used to
generate elctricity.
Water can also provide power. For a long time, people have used water to power
machines. Some early uses of water power were to mill grain, saw wood and power
machinery for the textile industry. Today water power is mostly used to generate electricity.
