ast month, while announcing our upcom-
ing 20th anniversary, I asked readers to send me their
thoughts about
ELLE DECOR. I did so with some hesitation:
Typically the vast majority of people who take the time to
mail a comment to a magazine are unrivaled in their crank-
iness. But I was sure I was up to the task, having survived
two seasons of wildly snarky blog posts regarding my stern
role on Bravo’s reality-competition show, Top Design . Hap-
pily, no emotional armor has been required.
One of my favorite responses is from a woman who
writes, “The houses you show us, houses which someone
like me who lives in a little Wisconsin city of 3,000 would
never otherwise see, give us insight into the souls of the
homeowners. Studying these places and their owners not
only puts magic into our lives but spurs our creativity to
make our own homes soulful and joyous.”
Wow. Those are words an editor truly lives for. In fact,
that is exactly the reaction we seek with every issue we
produce. Dazzlingly elegant, heart-poundingly fabulous
rooms most people can only fantasize about never fail to

catch our eye, but they are only part of the recipe. Such
homes consistently share our pages with equally appeal-
ing yet more pragmatic spaces packed with smart, useful
solutions to everyday decorating concerns. And even if you
can only dream about them, over-the-top interiors have
their place—they are meant to inspire you to decorate your
own home with more pizzazz, more fl air, more heart. Inspi-
ration has always been the essence of
ELLE DECOR: We not
only invite you to get to know our international styleset-
ters up close and personal, we hope you’ll be as excited as
we are about the way they choose to live. Most important,
though, is that you fi nd ways to adapt their ideas and make
them your own—whatever your budget.

Jim Shi The former editor of f ashionweekdaily.com was dazzled by
Cartier’s private dinner (“Rock Stars,” page 58) to debut two jewelry
lines and a video installation by David Lynch. “Cartier always produces
masterful events that transport guests to another realm,” he says. Shi
writes for V Magazine , Marie Claire , and the British edition of Vogue .
Joshua McHugh “The way she layers colors and patterns made for

such lively images,” says the photographer of decorator Alessandra
Branca’s Manhattan home (“Perfect Balance,” page 132). McHugh’s
photographs also appear in Interior Design and House Beautiful .
Tim McKeough The writer loved the spiraling staircase in the newly
opened Armani/5th Avenue store (What’s Hot! Shops, page 42) but was
most taken with the fi tting rooms. “They’re like little pods with fabric-
covered walls.” McKeough contributes to Fast Company and Wired .

By Kamala Nair
Charlotte Druckman When interviewing Catherine Malandrino
about her favorite things (Shortlist, page 56), Druckman was struck by
the fashion designer’s diverse range of interests. “She appreciates ev-
erything from R&B music to a garden in the South of France,” the New
York–based journalist says. “It’s a balance of practicality, luxury, and
natural beauty.” Druckman has been published in T: The New York
Times Style Magazine , Travel + Leisure , and InStyle .
Alexandra Wentworth Writing about the Washington, D.C.,
home she shares with husband George Stephanopoulos, host of
ABC News’ This Week , and their two daughters allowed Wentworth
to refl ect on her style accomplishments (“Capital Idea,” page 106). “I
love when I take a chance and hand-dye a rug myself or cover a wall
in seashells and it works,” the actress says. Wentworth, a regular
guest on Oprah Fridays Live , is the creator of and lead character on
the Starz television series Head Case .

Southern Style
As a fan and former resident of New Orleans, I en-
joyed last year’s article on Thomas Jayne’s apart-
ment [“Quarter Master,” July/August 2008 ] and was
thrilled to see
ELLE DECOR head back to the Big Easy
to show the stunning home of Allison Kendrick
[“Healing Power,” March 2009 ]. The elegant interiors
were the perfect complement to the landmark archi-
tecture. Thank you for highlighting residences that
typify the beauty and rich history of this fi ne city.

Creative Thinking
I am a 50-year-old wannabe designer who peruses
every issue of your magazine. I loved Adam Lippes’s
dining room in the October 2008 issue [“Sky High”],
so I freehanded my interpretation of his Fromental
wall covering in my half-bath and added a $100
pendant light based on his Swarovski chandelier.
Maybe one day I can have the real deal, but today I
am happy to be inspired by
ELLE DECOR and to
strive for the same feeling as the high-end look. I
can’t wait for next month’s ideas.
Becky Charles, Mooresville, NC
Universal Appeal
I loved the international flair in your March issue,
from all the fabulous ikats you featured to the little
Turkish-fl ag pillow in Freddie Leiba’s guest bedroom

[“Flawless Finish”]. It was also great to see Nathan
Thomas of Top Design [What’s Hot! Top Design].
He is so innovative and daring—I’m excited to see
what he will do in the future.
Lisa Martin, Concord, NH
Harmonious Haven
Anne Becker’s apartment is the most serene and
beautiful I have ever seen [“Worldly-Wise,” March].
In the article, she indicated she was ready to jettison
her large lilac sectional sofa because it was too per-
manent. I think she should follow that impulse and,
coincidentally, my apartment and I are ready for
such lovely permanence!
Robyn Ryan, New York City
Time Flies
I have just returned from a fi ve-day trip to Hong Kong
and wanted to let you know what a pleasure it was to
spend some of the 15-hour flight with my March
ELLE DECOR. As always, your magazine was filled
with intriguing homes and people.

Good Sport
I consider it a treat when ELLE DECOR arrives in the
mail, and when I saw the March cover I just had to
write to tell you about a game I play with a friend of
mine while looking through the magazine. It’s called
Spot the Suzani. For that issue it was too easy—there
was one right on the cover! Usually you have to look
rather persistently, but you’ll find one or two. I have
several suzanis in my house and love them for their

bold yet imperfect appearance. We look forward to
continuing our game and invite others to join.
