Some experience on how to teach English speaking skill for
students in grade 8

1. INTRODUCTION
1.1. Reasons to choose theme:
As we all know, English is a dificult subject for most students. A teacher
wants to teach successfully one lesson, the teacher is required not only to have
the technical ability, the social knowledge but also the teacher is required to
coordinate the appropriate teaching methods with students’ learning activities.
The amount of knowledge is more and more advanced, requiring students must
try to study as hard as they can. Moreover, students are getting master and
master this subject, each teacher in the process of instruction must always
improve and choose an active teaching method consistent with the student's
thinking and abilities.
The country is transforming itself in the face of the ever-growing humanity.
The education sector is also growing to provide the largest, most valuable social
resource: Including intellectual resources - human resources of Vietnam, the
future owners of the country must be both rosy and professional. People who act
in a dynamic, creative way, adapt quickly to the development of science and
technology and the relentless transformation of society. Each Vietnamese people,
each family and the whole society respect the valued education. Our Party
determines "education is the top national policy". Educational reform plays a
critical role in general education. Education reform is the foundation, a driving
force for industrialization and modernization of the country. Let Vietnam step by
step firmly on the way to integrate the economy with the world and firmly to the
non-stop development of science and technology of humanity. Market economy
in the period of opening and integration, English has long been considered an
important communication language, it is more important in the trend of economic
integration today. If students learn English well , they will be able to use the
international language to study, communicate and exchange information. In my
opinion, one of the basic and essential skills for every student is speaking skill.


I discovered the practice speaking skill for students is important. I want to bring
my knowledge to impart to students and find out teaching methods appropriate to
each lesson.

After aprocess of exploration, reseach, as well as references from colleagues,
with experience accumulate. I bravely chose the theme: “ Some experience on
how to teach
English speaking skill for students in grade 8” to give colleagues references and
suggestions for me.
1.2. Research purposes theme:
Over the years I have taught English at school in new ways. I realized one
thing: Most students do not know how to learn foreign languages. The use of
English in communication is limited. They do not dare to communicate with
their friends in English. Moreover, they are weak in speaking skill. To practice
speaking effectively, students must be well-trained and practiced speaking to be
familiar with the forms of speech.The more you train your speaking skills, the
faster you speak and the better your communication.
The teaching method as the current innovation primarily focuses more on the
creative activeness of the students. Most of the time when their communication
is thinking actively practice their English. To have a really good lesson, the
students have to prepare carefully for homework. Furthermore one lesson to
learn good oral skills they need to be more prepared, especially vocabulary and
grammar knowledge. The majority of pupils in schools have conditions to
practice speaking English but they are shy shy, underutilized opportunities to
speak English. That was the purpose of my research for this theme.
1.3. Object of studying theme:

- English Classes curriculum 8
- 8th grade students of Sao Vang junior high school
- Research scope: 8th grade students of Sao Vang junior high school
- Range in grade

- Research methods through practical work in English at junior high school
- Research methods through experience, teaches English at junior high school

2. CONTENT INITIALTIVES EXPERIENCE:
2.1. Rationale of initialtives experiences:
English is an international language, so it is very important to everyone. If
we know English we can easily communicate with everyone in the world.
Currently in Vietnam we attach importance to English, especially in learning
and teaching English in new ways. Students have the opportunity to
communicate with people in English. Students easily manipulate them into life.
A highlight of the program is to create new textbooks maximum opportunities
for students to practice skills 4. Speaking as one of the skills development
focused in the new methods of teaching foreign languages.. Speaking of
importance because it is the skill that students communicate in English words.
2.2. Current status of the problem before applying initialtives experience:
Perhaps none of us deny the importance of English for Vietnam in the period of
economic integration, political and cultural world, especially when the speed of
globalization is taking place rapidly cool. Knowing English helps us more

confidence in communication.
Otherwise English has become the focus subjects as diverse course but is still
difficult subjects and also students who are not gifted to learn English easily. In
recent years under the old program and textbooks new textbooks. new methods
of teaching and learning, many students enjoyed the course, active in learning,
but mainly students quite well. Subjects many poor students, they have not
mastered the knowledge, learning passively, waiting for the outcome of his
friends made, many of them are accidental practice speaking in class, afraid to
say the wrong, many children not read or write is the most simple sentence
patterns, thereby affecting speaking skill. On the other hand, most eighth graders
face many difficulties in the process of learning English, especially oral skills.
Often they do not know where to begin telling her how, lack of ideas, lack of
knowledge of grammar, vocabulary and lack of sentence structure. Moreover,
according to the distribution frame of the educational program for new books,
each unit pilot lessons taught in 7 more. Reading skill

- Ask about school teachers and friends.
- Ask about hobbies and daily work time.

- Ask about the distance and transport ...

2.3. Solutions used to solve problems:
a. Ideological education:
When actually teach 8th grade English at school, I was always interested in
strengthening developing speaking skills for students, as a prerequisite for them
to practice speaking, reading and writing skills can find new subjects they learn.
In addition, I also educate them to understand why the Ministry of Education to

put the English subject in secondary schools. Well the English subject in high
school gives students a new communication tool to acquire the scientific
knowledge of advanced techniques, learn the culture and rich diversity of the
world, ease of integration with the international community. Finished junior
high school, students need to understand the basics, minimal and relatively
systematic practice of modern English. Essential understanding of the country
and people and culture of an English-speaking country. Able to use English as a
communication tool at the simplest level, basic, universal form of listening,
speaking, reading, writing.
In teaching foreign language, speaking skill plays an important role. Most
students have trouble learning to speak English especially when communicating
with foreigners. Communication is facilitating motivate us to learn and use a

foreign language most effectively. However this goal neglected if only assess
language proficiency through knowledge rather than measured by the ability to
use language. To equip students with and speaking skills to use when
communicating, teachers need to organize and facilitate the construction,
environmental language to encourage students to participate in activities above
grade naturally and effectively. Conditions and environmental are expressed
through the trenvironmental conditions and this is expressed through language
games, through the conversation in order to stimulate the potential and
simultaneously encourage and help students so they really think that they are not
alone, do not hesitate in using language environment. Organization of language
games is one of the communication activities in the classroom to help students
better study more vivid, bold and confident when speaking English participation

b. Good use of technical flexibility in developing speaking skills for students
in grade 8:
Usually a speaking lesson in class was built on the basis of a three-step
process includes: Introduction, practice and application. 3-step process above
can be understood as follows.
Step Introduction: In this step the teacher introduces the situation of speech,
giis us from, the new structure and define the tasks and the time students need to
perform.
Step practice: Students need to perform these exercises speech exploitation
begins with guided exercises to open more freely exercise.
Step apply: Students are encouraged to apply the language knowledge and] f
enrolled in the new social situations or combination of language knowledge
learned together.This step is also in training students to shift attention from the
form of the language to communicate content. Games are often used in English
classes to raise academic atmosphere comfortable and lively.
+ Organizations working in pairs, groups:
Want to develop spaeking skill, the organization in pairs, groups to practice
speaking and drill effective structure, the class should implement the following
three steps.

For training to be effective, teachers need to take steps before practice by
implementing a process consisting of three elements: how to prepare students defined purpose and commitment to perform tasks - assign time.( engage –
instruct- initiate)
-While - speaking:
Students perform personal tasks before (braistorm) individuals then exchange

tasks in pairs to draw the general issue, the pairs are assembled into groups to
discuss the results and draw the task common problems of group, group
representatives last statement prepared by his group to the class. While teacher
training students to stand in a certain position in the class (before class - end
class - or between classes) or go around the classroom to observe and listen to
the operation of the pair , the group takes place, teachers have the opportunity to
focus objects help gifted students or less.
- Post- speaking:
When the time for pairs and groups activities ended. Teachers should be held to
the pairs, the groups announced the results of operations of the pair, his team,
the whole class listening, additional information, correction, to review and
evaluate the results of the task performance group. Finally the teacher
summarizes the current ngjngoon languages, for comment and evaluation work
conducted with guaranteed both goals, the steps and the time is not
predetermined.
+ The objective of the development of speaking skill:
Student-centered. Direct exchange with the language spoken at the simplest
level, the daily communication situations through the application of basic
knowledge of the language of speech, vocabulary, grammar. Express your
attention in the normal communication situations related to the familiar themes
through the use of text language learning function.
Pronouncing practice is considered an intimate part of the activities associated
with words in different topics, so please do not introduce disassembled into
separate assignments position. The pronunciation practice will be conducted
with other words such activities with the new teaching from teaching listening
and speaking teaching.

Unit 1:
Leisure activities – skills 1 (speaking)
1. Pre - speaking :
T explains to Ss that these speech bubbles are from Quang and his parents.
Ss may work in pairs or in groups, but they will need to say why they think who
says what, based on the information from the passage. Go through the phrases in
the Language notes box with Ss.
In pairs, have Ss choose a speech bubble and combine it with the language in the
Language notes box.
T asks for volunteers to demonstrate their short exchanges.

2.While - speaking :
Act 4. Quang and his parents are talking about how he should spend his
free time. Decide which statements are from Quang and which are from his
parents.

T tells Ss that they can use the language in 4 for their role-play, and emphasis
that the phrases in the Study skill box should be used in their discussion.

The Bru-Van Kieu have a population of about 74,500 people living in the
provinces of Quang Binh, Quang Tri and Thua Thien Hue. The Bru-Van Kieu
language belongs to the Mon-Khmer group.
The Bru-Van Kieu grow rice, terraced fields and raise cattle and poultry for life.
The Bru-Van Kieu people often hold festivals before sowing seeds.

2.4. Effectiveness of initiatives experience:
Through practice the lessons, the poll of students and compare the quality of

3. CONCLUSION:
With this result, although sour absolute truth but it has also helped the
students interested in speaking skill.
Students didn’t feel scare speaking but had spoken good preparation for more
speaking. So I made a small number of comments on here to help yourself find a
way to teach a more effective speaking.
Above are the thoughts and practical work for myself in raising the quality of
teaching of English speaking skills in general and in particular. Omissions are
inevitable, look forward to the feedback from colleagues to the initiative this
experience was enjoyable and widely used.
