There is a well-known proverb: “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a

man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”.' It was this simple idea that led a farmer, Dan
West, from the American Midwest to start up a charity more than seventy years ago. The idea
for the charity came to him when he was helping refugees as an aid-worker in Spain. He was
there to provide relief, but soon realised that the single cup of milk rationed to the tired and
hungry refugees was not nearly enough. And then it struck him: What if instead of a cup of
milk, they had a cow?
It's not just a question of giving people a handout: the aim is to bring communities
together and bring sustainable agriculture and commerce to areas where poverty has long been
the norm. Giving a family an animal provides them with both food and a reliable income, as
they can sell or trade products such as milk and eggs at market. As the number of families with
a sustainable income increases, they can pool their resources and form farming cooperatives
and community-savings schemes, and even build schools and other communal amenities.
The aim of the project is to help families become self-reliant, but it is based on the idea
of shared knowledge and giving. Families pass on the training they receive, and also give the
first female offspring of the sheep or cow or whatever livestock it is they have to another
family. In this way the original donation spreads through the community, and a family that was
poor become donors themselves.
25. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. to provide a history of the charity
B. to give Dan West's biographical details
C. to explain how the charity's ideas work in practice
D. to show how people become richer
26. What was Dan West doing in Spain?
A. rationing milk to other Americans
B. starting up a new charity
C. giving cows to refugees
D. providing aid to those in need
