1- certain ['sə:tn] (of / about sth; that ...) having no doubt in your mind about
something:
chắc chắn
He's not certain what her name is.
I'm certain (that) doesn't like me.
She doesn't like me - I'm certain of it.
2- sure [∫uə] (of / about sth; that ...) certain: chắc chắn
Are you sure (that) he said he was coming?
It was him, who caused the accident, I'm sure of it.
Have you got a map? I'm not quite sure about the way.
3- to make certain / sure : a- (of sth / that ...) to check in order to be certain: làm cho
chắc chắn; đảm bảo chắc chắn.
He looked all around to make certain that nobody was listening.
I think this is your train but you'd better ask the guard to make sure (of it).
b- (of sth / of doing sth / that ...) to do something in order to be certain of victory:
làm cho rỏ; nắm cho chắc.
England scored twice in the last ten minutes to make certain of victory.


We left early to make sure of getting there on time.
Make sure (that) you’re not late.
4- positive ['pɔzətiv] (of / about sth; that ...) completely sure: khẳng định
'Are you sure you locked the door?' - 'Yes, I'm positive.'
She was positive (that) she had met him before somewhere.
Are you positive of / about what happened?
5- confident ['kɔnfidənt](of sth/ of doing sth) certain that something will happen as
you want it to happen: tự tin.
She was confident (that) she would win.
We're confident of victory.
He's confident of finishing the job on time.
6- hopeful ['houpful] (of sth / of doing sth / that ...) fairly confident: đầy hứa hẹn.
I'm hopeful (that) everything will turn out well in the end.
She’s not very hopeful of success.
Although the concert is sold out, he's hopeful of getting a ticket at the door.
7- hopefully ['houpfuli] let us hope (that ...) hy vọng rằng
Hopefully, I’ll be feeling better tomorrow.

8- optimistic [,ɔpti'mistik] (about sth / that ...) always expecting the best; hopeful
about the future: lạc quan.


We're optimistic that our money problems will soon be over.
She’s optimistic about her chances of getting the job.
9- an optimist ['ɔptimist] a person who is always optimistic: người lạc quan.
You must be a real optimist if you think that the bank is going to agree to lend you all
that money.
10- to hope for the best: to be hopeful that things will go well (especially when there
is reason to believe that they will not) hy vọng có được kết quả mong muốn.
Her attitude towards exams is to do a bit of revision the night before,

and just hope for the best!
11- to look on the bright side: to find something to be hopeful about in spite of
problems. thấy có cái gì đó đáng phấn khởi(mặc dù có khó khăn); lạc quan.
'I've just lost my job and my wife is asking for a divorce.' - 'Look on the bright side –
at least you've still got your friends. '

1- doubtful ['dautful] (about sth) uncertain and unconfident: nghi ngờ; đáng ngại .
I 'm doubtful (about) whether she’ll come.
I’ve agreed to lend him my car, but I still feel a bit doubtful about it.
2- to doubt [daut]
a. (s.o./sth) to be uncertain about someone or something: cảm thấy khơng chắc chắn
(về ai hay điều gì); nghi ngờ ai / điều gì.
I 'm sorry if 1 doubted you – you proved me wrong.
She apologized for having doubted my word.
(= for having thought that I was not telling the truth.)
b. (that .. ) to consider something to be unlikely : hồi nghi rằng; nghi ngờ sự thật(của
cái gì)
She may be there tonight, but I very much doubt it.
I doubt that she'll be there.
I doubt whether they'll come.
3- doubt (about sth) (a feeling of) uncertainty : sự nghi ngờ; sự ngờ vực.
There seems to be some doubt about whether he is actually guilty or not.
There's no doubt that she’s lying. Everyone thinks it's a wonderfu1 idea,
but I have my doubts
Now that I 'm finally leaving the country forever, I'm beginning to have doubts about it.
4- no doubt certainly or very probably (used to emphasize that you believe something
to be true) khơng cịn nghi ngờ nữa, tin chắc.
No doubt you’ll have heard about their engagement.
We’ll see you tonight, no doubt.

5- skeptical ['skeptikl] (of/ about sth) very doubtful about something; unwilling to
believe that a claim, statement, promise etc. is true: không sẵn lịng tin cái gì(lời tun
bố, lời hứa); hồi nghi.
I've assured her that my offer is genuine, but she still seems rather skeptical. (of / about
it).


6- pessimistic [,pesi'mistik] (about sth) always expecting the worst: yếm thế, bi quan.
He’s very pessimistic about his chances of passing his exams.
7- a pessimist ['pesimist] a pessimistic person: người bi quan
Don't be such a pessimist! You’ve got as good a chance as anybody of getting the job.
8- a reservation [,rezə'vei∫n] (about s.o./sth) a feeling of doubt about someone or
something, that causes you to hesitate: cảm giác nghi ngờ về ai hoặc điều gì (thương
gây do dự)
She's beginning to have reservations about marrying him.
My biggest reservation about buying it is the price.
We accept your offer without reservation.
