1. How many sounds are there in the IPA? How are they classified?
2. What is word stress? Give examples.
ANSWER.
1.There are 44 sounds in the IPA. It includes 20 vowel sounds and 24 consonant sounds.
Vowel sounds consist of 12 monophthongs and 8 diphthongs. Consonant sounds have unvoiced and
voiced sounds.
2.Word stress is the stress placed on syllables within the words.
There are two vital rules about word stress. The first one is that one word has one stress and the second
one is that the stress is always on a vowel.
For example:
1. History / ‘histri/ We have two syllables on the word “history” the stress is placed on the first
syllable HIStory
2. Photographer. We have 4 syllables, and the stress is placed on the second syllable. PhoTO
grapher.
3. Game. We have one syllable, so the stress is placed on its.

a. The answer is ENTERTAINMENT. Because the stress is on the third syllable. While other
words are stressed on the second syllable.
b. The answer is ENGINEER We have suffix EER, so the stress is on its. It is pronounced en gi
NEER. The other words are stressed on the first syllable.
c. The answer is POSITION. We have suffix TION, so the stress is placed in front of suffix. It is
pronounced poSItion. (the second syllable). Popular, horrible and positive have the stress on
the first syllable.
d. The answer is CORRECT. selfish, purpose and surface are the noun, correct is a verb.
The rule for a noun with two syllables is that the stress is placed on the first one, and a verb with
2 syllables the stress is placed on the second syllable. CORRECT is a verb so the answer is
CORRECT.
