Types of Writing skills

The word expository contains the word expose, so the reason expository is an apt descriptor for this type of
writing is that it exposes, or sets forth, facts. It is probably the most common writing genre you will come across
throughout your day. In an expository piece, a topic will be introduced and laid out in a logical order without
reference to the author’s personal opinions.

Expository Writing

Expository writing can be found in:
Textbooks Journalism (except for opinion and editorial articles), Business writing, Technical writing, Essays
Instructions

Types of Writing skills

The aim of descriptive writing is to help the reader visualize, in detail, a character, event, place, or all of
these things at once. The author might describe the scene in terms of all five senses. Descriptive writing
allows the writer a great deal more artistic freedom than expository writing does.

Descriptive Writing

Descriptive writing can be found in:
Fiction, Poetry, Advertising Journal and diary writing

Types of Writing skills

The aim of persuasive writing, or argumentation, is to influence the reader to assume the author’s point of

view. The author will express personal opinions in the piece and arm him- or herself with evidence so that
the reader will agree with him or her.

Persuasive Writing

Persuasive writing can be found in:
Advertising, Opinion and editorial pieces, Reviews, Job applications

Types of Writing skills

The purpose of narrative writing is to tell a story, whether that story is real or imaginary. Pieces in a narrative style will have
characters, and through the narrative, the reader learns what happens to them. Narrative writing can also include dialogue.

Narrative Writing

Narrative writing can be found in:
All types of fiction (e.g., novels, short stories, novellas), Poetry, Biographies Human interest stories, Anecdotes

The important of writing skills

Writing aims to capture a thought or idea , to transfer to a permanent format, making it tangible

The responsibility for that transfer falling squarely on the writer's shoulder.

If communication is the ultimate goal, write for your audience, not for personal style

Writing has to be much clearer than spoken language because it lacks these assisting cues

Great care is required to ensure that your message is accurately interpreted by its audience

SOME WRITING MISTAKES

Subject–Verb Agreement

One of the most common grammar mistakes involves subject–verb

Examples

Incorrect

She run fast.

Correct

She runs fast.

agreement. Verbs have different forms depending on the subject. Be
careful that you don’t use the wrong verb form for the subject that
you’re using.

Incorrect

Correct

We goes to the movies every week.

We go to the movies every week.

Subject–verb agreement can be as simple as the examples above. But, there instances where
using a singular verb versus a plural one can become tricky.

Incorrect Verb Tense

Examples
Incorrect

I went to the store next week.

Correct

I will go to the store next week.

Incorrect

I used to danced ballet.

Correct

I used to dance ballet.

Not only do verbs have different forms for different subjects, they also
have different forms depending on tense and mood. Use the correct
tense in your writing and don't switch between tenses.

Incorrect Word Choice

Examples
Your grandma might be old but she isn’t antique or fossilized!

Avoid using the wrong word when you write so that your meaning is
clear. Even words that are synonyms might not be interchangeable.

Pay attention to connotation and tone when choosing synonyms.

Wordiness
Even if your grammar and spelling are perfect, wordiness can make your writing hard to read. Be succinct and clear in your writing.

TIPS TO IMPROVE WRITING SKILLS

WRITE, WRITE, WRITE!

You really need to write something in English more or less every day . In my experience. If you're
studying for an exam, you probably need to do more writing , perhaps writing the answer to an exam
question at least twice a week .
