ABSTRACT
Along with socio-economic development, the production and consumption of non-biodegradable plastic
products tend to increase rapidly causing pressure on the environment and life on Earth. Under the impact of
environmental factors, plastic waste is broken down over time and causes microplastic pollution. A number
of studies have shown that Vietnam is considered one of the countries with a large volume of plastic waste
discharged into the sea. Microplastic pollution has become a serious environmental problem and poses
negative effects on the environment, ecology, and human health. This study investigates the current status of
microplastic pollution by examining some physical and chemical properties of microplastics found in water
samples collected from coastal estuaries of Mong Duong river and Dien Vong river in Quang Ninh Province.
The research results show that the level of microplastic pollution in the study area is still relatively low and
the main composition of microplastic samples is HDPE.
