The simple past tense of ordinary verbs
1. Usage :
- It is used for actions
completed in the past
at a definite time .
Ex: He phoned you 2

whose time is not given but
which occupied a period of
time now terminated or
occurred at a moment in a
period of time now
terminated.

Ex: They grew a tree

- It is used for a past
habit.
Ex: He smoked twenty
cigarettes a day till he
gave up
Smoking is harmful
The simple past tense of ordinary verbs
a. Regular verbs :
- They are formed by adding ED to the infinitive .
Ex : worked , passed
- Verbs ending in E add D only.
Ex : loved , liked
- The same form is used for all persons .
- Some verbs have one vowel and end in a single consonant , this
consonant is doubled before ED.
Ex : stopped , travelled
- Verbs ending in Y following a consonant change the Y into I before
adding ED .
Ex : cried , tried
But Y following a vowel doesn't change .
Ex : played , obeyed

b. Irregular verbs:
- Verbs must be learnt by heart .

( + ) S + V (simple past ) + ( O ).
Ex :
I liked that film .
She saw some lions last week .

Ex :
They didn't go to school last Sunday .
