The name of The creative teaching experience: SOME HELPFUL SKILLS FOR
STUDENTS TO STUDY ENGLISH EFFECTIVELY
I. The reason for choosing the subject
In learning English, all learners want to speak it fluently, If so they must
master the four skills such as reading, writing, listening and speaking, however,
they always find it difficult to speak, to write or to listen even a statement or a
phrase in English. In high school, most students cannot speak English although
they understand what a word or a sentence means. They can’t write a complete
sentence either. Moreover, a student who graduated from high school could not
find a job only because they could not answer the questions “How do you do?
what’s your qualification? Or What salary do you want to get? ”in an interview.
As a result, it is necessary for our teachers to study some effective methods to
help students learning English effectively in class or out of class so that they
can communicate in real life.
In a word, to give students helpful skills to learn English effectively is one

of the topics that I’ve been attracted for a long time because I think that it’s
useful for students not only at class but also on their own.
That is the reason why I choose this topic.
II. The advantages and the disadvantages
1)Advantages
 The Headmaster always supports and helps the teachers with physical
materials.
 Some students are interested in learning English.
 Teachers are always enthusiastic in teaching.
 Getting much valuable experience from colleagues and reference books.
2)Disadvantages
 Students’ capacity is much limited and of different levels. Some of them
are quite deficient in the base of learning English.
 Some students pronounce habitually wrongly.
 Students are lacking in vocabulary and structures.
4
BM03-TMSKKN
 The majority of students are lacking in self – confidence to present
ideas, perform sentences before the others.
3) Statistics
At the beginning of the school year (2010-2011), our center had about 22%
of the grade 10 students that couldn’t read English correctly and about 64% of
them couldn’t speak out a complete sentence.
III. The content
1. Logical base
Of all the thousands of languages in the world, English is one of the most
difficult to learn but it is important for people who can use it.
It is true that English is the most popular language in the world. We can
communicate in every part of the world if we know English. Billions of people on
this earth are crazy to improve their Spoken English.

2. Some helpful skills for students to study English effectively:
It sounds simple doesn't it? But over the last ten (plus) years I've taught lots
of students who say they want to learn English, but really they just want to
"know" English. They have little or no intention of actually learning it. I
ask them it’s simply to start soon or they never finish. Yes, simply start!
I often tell them If they don't start, they'll never finish, and the longer they put it
off, the more likely they are to give up.
So I urge them to start!
To find an English class.
To find some English learning software or books.
To join an English learning forum.
To begin learning the English alphabet (ABC) and numbers (123).
To learn the vocabulary for their hobbies or interests.
To do something or to do anything.
Once having started – not stopping.
5
No matter what the reason is that they are learning English, they want to be sure
that they learn it quickly and effectively as well. Whether they are learning English
in a class, on their own, or with language teaching software, there are certain
things that they can do to make sure that they learn the language effectively. So,
here are a few skills or tips to keep in mind that will help them on their journey
towards learning the English language.
Being Sure they WANT to Learn
One of the first tips that can help them out if they want to know how to learn
English effectively is to make sure that they really want to learn this language. If
they really don’t want to learn, there is no book, no class, and no tips that are going
to make it simpler for them. Make sure that they ask themselves whether they
really want to learn English. If not, then it’s not for them. However, a real desire to
learn the language can go a long way.
Learning to Learn

Students never finish learning, nor do they ever finish learning how to learn.
They should think and work independently not to depend only on their teacher or
trainer.
They ought to develop a love of learning and have a vision that motivates them.
They should participate in any related activities, help others to learn.
They must know to learn from their mistakes and failures.
They should keep a sense of humour and never to give up!
Figuring Out What Motivates them
If they want to learn English effectively, they need to figure out what their
motivation is. Why do they want to learn English so badly? Do they want to
improve their current learning, get a better job, attend university, or enjoy their
lives in an English speaking country? No matter the reason they are motivated to
learn this language, they need to understand what motivates them so they can use it
as encouragement as they learn the language.
Deciding On Some Goals
It is very important that they have goals in mind if they want to know how to learn
English effectively.
Setting goals will help them to know where they want to be and it will motivate
them to actually see their progress as they learn the language as well. Decide what
their goals are, whether they want to improve their vocabulary, pronunciation, or
even if they want to comprehend when they’re listening better. Once they know
their goals, they will be sure that they are working to achieve them.
Taking Responsibility For One’s Own Learning
It's normal for students to expect one’s teacher to teach him/her, but that's not how
language acquisition works. One’s English teacher is really there to present
English to him/her, in all its glory, but he/she has to learn it. I am always very clear
6
with my students. In the first lesson I tell them, "I am not here to teach you
English", and once they have got over the shock I explain, "I am here to help you
learn it".

So, what is the difference? Well, once they've been presented with new English
words or vocabulary, it's up to them to use them, review what they've learnt, even
play with it. It's the only way they'll get it to actually stick in their brain, start to
make sense of the structure of English and develop a feeling for the language.
Being Sure to Practice
Practicing is probably one of the most important tips if they want to know how to
learn English effectively. The more they practice their English skills, the better
they will become at it. they can practice by reading English, by writing emails and
letters, by listening to television or the radio in English, or even by taking time to
speak to other people who speak the English language. The more they practice, the
fewer mistakes they’ll end up making over time, and they’ll become more effective
with their English skills.
Of course, reading is one area a student in how to learn English well, but this
is something he/she can learn on his/her own quite effectively, outside of the
classroom or even around other people. He/She just Keeps a dictionary with
him/her so that he/she can look up unfamiliar words. Then, he/she can write these
words down in a notebook and use them in a conversation so that when he/she try
to use them again, they will come to him/her much more easily.
Newspapers, magazines and books all help him/her learn English well. If he/she’s
just starting out, try reading children's books to start. This is especially helpful for
people just starting to learn English. There are some books specifically written for
people just starting to learn English; the words are quite simple and yet effective
enough that if he/she use them, you can learn to speak simple English quite
quickly.
If his/her English is more advanced, he/she can try reading from magazines books
and newspapers. With these sources, English is more difficult, but they will
challenge him/her if his/her English is advanced enough that he/she needs more
interesting things to read.
When he/she first begin to read English, I ask them not to try to understand every
word. Instead, simply try to get a general idea of what he/she is reading; other

words in the sentence will help him/her do this. If he/she doesn’t understand the
first time he/she reads something, he/she can always go back later and use his/her
dictionary to look up the words he/she doesn't quite know.
Another idea in how to learn English well is with writing. When a student
writes, he/she can practice his/her English as effectively as he/she does when
he/she reads, only more so. This is because he/she reinforces his/her understanding
of the language by writing it, which is a physical movement. For best practice, I
advise him/her to write something every day in English, even if it's a letter to a
friend, or a simple message. He/she can also keep a diary, and use his/her English
skills to write down what happened to him/her during his/her day. And that he/she
7
just starts with simple sentences at first and as he/she gets better, makes sentences
longer and more complicated.
The student can also use the Internet this way, because the Internet will let him/her
"talk" with other people simply by writing. He/she can visit chat rooms, or write a
blog. All of these things help him/her learn English through writing. When he/she
writes, he/she can also take another look at words he/she has learned in the past,
and use them in sentences to make sure he/she knows them well.
One of the best ways in regard to how to learn English well is to speak. One
must Speak as much as he/she can in English, even though he/she may be
uncomfortable at first. Pronunciaction with a whole series of activities to practise
individual sounds, minimal pairs, tongue-twisters and dictation is probably the best
way to improve his/her English quickly. He/she can listen to sample dialogues
from everyday situations and get the chance to practise and they can help him/her
improve his/her language as well. As he/she practices, his/her English will
improve.
The student should surround himself/herself with English- speaking people every
day so that he/she has no choice but to learn the language. This will also help
him/her begin to think in English, which in turn will improve his/her speaking and
other English language skills. As he/she gets better, he/she willl no longer have to

translate from his/her language to English or vice versa as he/she speaks. Even if
he/she is not sure, he/she can use sentences that sound right to him/her. These are
most often the right ones to use; if his/her English is not quite right sometimes, and
that he/she shouldn't worry. His/her English-speaking friends will help him/her and
correct him/her if he/she asks them to. And he/she shouldn't worry about being
embarrassed; his/her English-speaking friends will understand that he/she is doing
his/her best to speak their language, which is quite an accomplishment. For
example, he/she can find English speaking people on the internet, look for people
with the same interests as him/her to get development in natural friendships based
on his/her hobbies etc.Eventually he/she will make friends and they will be much
more likely to give him/her correction/guidance.He/she can also join an English
club or conversation group. The atmosfhere is friendly and fun here. Or he/she can
join in voive chat rooms on internet as well.
And listening is also one of the most skills a student needs when we speak
about how to learn English well. If the student is in a country that speaks mostly
English, of course he/she is going to be listening to it all day long. In turn, this is
going to help him/her learn to speak the language effectively, because he/she will
learn to adapt to the speech and language around him/her. He/she can then turn this
into written language skills as well; oftentimes, listening to everyday English
conversations categorized from easy to difficult is the best way to learn. If the
student is a silent listener at first, he/she can then gain his/her confidence and begin
to speak it when he/she feels that he/she understands it well.
Of course, simply watching English-speaking television or listening to music and
main news stories in Real Audio format along with well-illustrated text versions in
the English language is also going to help him/her learn. It is really good to listen
to a collection of authentic listening passages at three levels .All they will also help
8
him/her learn English well, get pronunciation correct and speech patterns down the
right way as well.
Finally, we must remember that everyone will understand that someone is learning

to speak English and is likely to be shy when he/she tries it at first. This is not a
problem. If he/she doesn't start, he/she will never learn, so he/she ought to give it a
try; even though the first time might be hard, the next will be easier, and the next
even easier, and so on. The more he/she speaks English, the better he/she'll
become, and that he/she isn’t afraid, and that he/she should speak out, and pretty
soon, he/she'll be speaking English easily and will wonder what he/she were ever
worried about.
Talking to Onerself
Talking to oneself is no longer the first sign of madness - it's the first sign of
excellence.
"Self-talk" can help someone who learns English becomes more fluent. And the
great thing is – he/she can do it anywhere: in the bath, in the street, while he/she’s
taking the dog for a walk. As long as he/she tries to put a regular time aside every
day when he/she can talk to himself/herself in English. Talk about what he/she did
yesterday, what he/she is doing, about interesting things which have happened to
him/her and the things he/she’s planning to do in the future.
Speaking without Fear
The biggest problem most people face in learning a new language is their own fear.
They worry that they won’t say things correctly or that they will look stupid so
they don’t talk at all. I always tell my students not to do this. The fastest way to
learn anything is to do it – again and again until they get it right. Like anything,
learning English requires practice. They mustn’t let a little fear stop them from
getting what they want.
I suggest them
To speak more slowly (not louder!)
To keep it simple. Use common words. For example, if they want to say cat, don't
use the word feline.
To use only basic sentence structures (subject/verb/object).
Not to worry about pronouns, instead use the names of people they are talking
about.

To use a lot of hand gestures. "Do you mean up?" they raise up their hands to help
the person understand the word.
To use sound effects. They may feel silly, but if they are trying to tell someone that
something exploded, using the sound "Ka Boom!" will get their point across!
9
To read short stories out loud and try to see, say and hear the words to reinforce
their memory. Record themself and play it back later.
Learning from One’s Own Mistakes
Students who learn languages all make mistakes, so they need to learn to accept
them as a fact of life. If anyone gives you an unnecessarily stressful time about
making a mistake, remember they will have made just as many mistakes as you, if
not more. The question 'May I congratulate you on never having made a mistake in
your life?' is a useful answer here. Children learn to walk because they get up when
they fall, not because they stay down. This means that when practising our English,
we ourselves or others sometime have mistakes in speaking, we see those mistakes
and next time we will correct ourselves from them.
Surrounding Oneself with English
The absolute best way to learn English is to surround themselves with it. They
should take notes in English, put English books around their room, listen to
English language radio broadcasts, watch English news, movies and television.
Speak English with their friends whenever they can. The more English material
that they have around them, the faster they will learn and the more likely it is that
they will begin "thinking in English."
They should make friends with native English speakers.
They take chance to learn about the cultures of English-speaking countries.
They learn English by reading, listening, studying, and asking questions; practice
what they learn by speaking and writing.
They ought to dictation is an excellent way to improve their listening and spelling
skills. They should have a friend read a few paragraphs from a book or a
newspaper and write down what they think they hear, then they compare what they

have written with the actual text.
If they can dream in English, this means that they have succeeded in becoming a
fluent English speaker.
Working on Vocabulary Development
No matter what language a student’s learning, a large vocabulary is going to be
very important. This is especially important when he/she is learning the English
language. One of the best ways to learn new vocabulary words is to start reading
and he/she can also learn more by listening to the radio or watching television.
Playing word games and doing word puzzles can also help him/her out when
he/she is trying to enhance his/her English vocabulary.
Yes, it’s true.
Linking a new word to a picture is a good way of remembering it.
For example: To learn the words about animals in Unit 10 of English 11 and
English 12. To search for the word "rhinoceros, leopard, parrot, lizard so on " in
Google Images and he/she'll find lots of pictures of rhinoceros, leopard, parrot,
lizard.
10
He/She can even print out the best one he/she find. Then he/she stick it on a flash
card - picture one side - word the other. That way we can test himself/ herself later.
Learning a word won't help very much if students promptly forgets it. Research
shows that it takes from 10 to 20 repetitions to really make a word part of his/her
vocabulary.
I remind them that they should always keep a notebook and pencil on them at all
times. Whenever they see or hear a new word, they should write it down. They
write the word down where they saw or heard it too, it will help them remember it
later. And then they look the word up on the internet or in a dictionary when they
get home.
They also should read 10 words from their English dictionary daily as well.
After they've read them, they had better try writing two sentences using all 10
words. It's not easy, but it can be fun

I often encourage studnets If they find it difficult to remember the meaning of a
word, they just write it on a card – then they look it up in Wiki or Google and copy
out (with pen and paper on the other side of the card) a few sentences that they can
find relating to the word.
For example: squirrel
On Wikipedia - One well-known trait of some species of squirrel is the gathering
and storing of nuts for the winter.
On Google - Squirrel is the common name for rodents, and can sometimes be used
to describe someone who is a 'goof' or 'clown'
Students should incorporate English into their daily life.
They ought to see if they can name everything they come into contact with, from
getting up in the morning, until they go to bed at night.
Learning words in context
Research shows that the vast majority of words are learned from context.
Why should we learn new words in context?
Some learners try to improve their vocabulary by having a list of words to learn for
the day. We have known some that even try to learn words from the dictionary,
starting from the letter ‘A’! It is possible to learn some words if we use this
approach, but it certainly is not the best way to learn. “Is there any other way?”, we
might ask. As a matter of fact, there is…we call this as ‘learning in context’.
“What does that mean…we might ask? Well, learning in context means learning a
new word when we are reading or listening. There are many advantages for this
way of learning.
1. Students have a NEED to know the meaning
If A student happens to come across a new word in the middle of a story or an
article, He/she really wants to know the meaning of it. Otherwise, he/she cannot
fully understand or follow the story. This creates a desire or interest in finding out
the meaning of the word. He/she wants to find out the meaning of the word, at any
11
cost. Learning that takes place under such conditions is long lasting and effective.

Imagine a student came across the simple word ‘patient’ in the middle of the story.
Example: in an exercise in the exercise book of English10 published by the Youth
Press
“Lily was a patient when she met Dr. Fred. He came across as a genuinely caring
person, who truly sympathised with her in this situation. Her broken leg gave her
an opportunity to think about the things that really matter in life”.
In the example, the student wants to know the meaning of all of the words in these
sentences, because he/she really wants to understand the story and the characters in
the story.
2. Students can learn the meaning ‘in context‘
If a student has a good dictionary, try flipping through the pages of the dictionary
and he’s sure to find that there are many meanings listed under most of the words.
Some words even have 25 different meanings! Can we believe that? Maybe that
makes we say, “Oh, my God! How can I learn so many words?” Well, like
anything difficult, he/she should approach it step-by-step. The best way to get
through all of the meanings is to learn them in their context. When he/she learns
them in context, he/she can know the meaning of the word in that sentence. In the
above sentences, the word in context, meaning of the word patient is, someone
who is ill in hospital.
3. Students should get an example sentence of how to USE it
Just learning words separately, doesn’t help them to learn how to use the word.
After all, that is the reason why a student wants to learn new words in the first
place. When he/she learns in context, this problem is solved, because he/she gets a
given example sentence, right in front of his/her eyes. If he/she wants to be a good
learner, then he/she will write down his/her new sentence and the example in
his/her vocabulary notebook, to be practised later.
4. Students can also try to guess the meaning of the new word which is a good way
to approach learning a new word
He/She can also learn to guess the meaning of the word this way, by reading or
listening around the word he/she doesn’t know. In the example, we can guess the

meaning from the phrase ‘her broken leg’ and from the name of one of the
characters, Dr. Fred. When he/she tries to guess first and then looks up the
meaning in a dictionary, the time he/she is spending with the word increases,
which helps him/her to remember the word better. Also, this method of learning a
new word helps you to learn the word faster, because your brain becomes more
active in the learning process.
Studying on a Regular Basis
If you plan on learning a language, you are going to have to make studying a
priority. It’s not just something you do every now and then, but it should be done
every single day. When you study each day it is easier to retain the new things that
you learn. You’ll also find that you can review easier every day and you’ll
definitely remember what you learn a lot better as well. So, if you want to know
how to learn English effectively, then you need to make studying a priority.
12
Reflecting on what one’s learning
Students should try to recall what they have learnt as they are taking a class as well
as afterwards. They ought to try different ways of studying the material then think
about applying these new concepts to their work situation. From time to time,
review the classes they have completed as a refresher. They need to do some of
the exercises they did a few months ago, and see if they’ve improved their score.
Making it Enjoyable
When you’re having fun, it actually makes it easier for you to remember things
that you learn, so make sure that you make learning English fun. Take time to do
puzzles and to play games, even if it does seem a bit childlike. They really can help
you as you learn English and provide you with excellent practice.
For example, after finishing the reading part of a unit in which introduce
about a special man, an invention or an important event, I hold a game in groups or
in pairs to motivate students to speak in English and to revise the knowledge they
learnt. I take this as an example, the reading part of unit 4 English 10 - “People’s
background” talks about Marie Curie. To consolidate the information about her,

teacher holds a reminding game - “talking about Marie Curie”
- teacher asks students to work in groups (2 groups)
- let time for students to finish the task
- Call up one student of each group to present the information. The group
gives more information will win the game.
Teacher says Group 1 Group 2
The topic is “talking
about Marie Curie”
(Teacher gives some
questions as
suggestion)
1. When was she born?
She was born in Warsar
on November7
th
, 1876
She studied in local
school and got
scientific training from
her father.
Marie harboured the
dream of a scientific
career.
To save money for a
study tour abroad, she
had to work as a private
tutor.
2. Which school did
she go to?
3. What did she want to

In 1891, Marie, with
very little money to
live on, went to Paris
to realize her dream at
13
be?
4. How did she reach
her dream?
…….
the Sorbornne.
She earned a degree in
Physics with flying
colours. She met Pierre
Curie in 1894 and they
got married a year later.
After her husband’s
death, she took up his
position and was the
first woman in France
to be a university
professor.
In 1903, Marie became
the first woman to
receive a PhD
She was awarded a
Nobel Prize in
chemistry for
determining the atomic
weight of radium.

Teacher remarks and gives the score for each group.
Another game can also be taken.
“What's the Question?”
Level: Any Level
Type of Activity: listening and speaking
Purpose: review question forms previously studied in class
Procedure:
 Form two teams (three will work, but two seems to add just the right amount of
competitive tension).
 Explain the game, with a few examples of answers in search of questions. Ask,
'What's the question?', and get students to correctly say the corresponding
questions for your answer.
 Have two players one from each team come to the front. Style it like a game
show if you like, with the students standing side-by-side. If you have access to
bells or buzzers, it's even more fun.
 Next, read an answer to a question and say, 'What's the question?' The fastest
player to respond wins a point for her/his team. New contestants come to the front
for a new round.
14
Race Sentence
A game can be taken.
Level: Any Level (for writing)
A good game for large classes and for reviewing vocabulary lessons.
Prepare a list of review vocabulary words.
Write each word on four small pieces of paper. That means writing the word four
times, once on each paper.
Organize the pieces like bundles, 4 bundles, 4 sets of identical words.
Divide the class into 4 teams. get them to make creative team names.
Distribute each list of words to four teams. Every student on each team should
have a paper. Four teams have the same words.

When you call a word, 4 students should stand up, one from each team. The
students must then run to the blackboard and race to write a sentence using their
word.
The winner is the one with a correct and clearly written sentence.
This is always a hit with kids. For more advanced students, use tougher words.

IV. The Result
After giving students of differernt levels practice again and again with the
presented techniques, I found my students get improving day by day. Now they
can not only put questions and give answers rather correctly but also strongly
give ideas present some information in front of class and do self-study by
themselves at home. At the end of this school year, there were more students
could speak and present some complete sentences and some certain ideas that
they want to perform. ( The students of class 12N1, 12N2 and 11N )
V. The Drawing Lesson
- Teacher regularly motivates and encourages students to prepare and learn their
lesson well.
- Teacher creates and lets students practice in a comfortable class atmosphere.
- Students are more zealous in taking part in the activities during the class time.
- Students are more self-studying by themselves with interest.

VI. The Conclusion
Learning English to use it in real life effectively is a long time of finding and
practicing. A student has to learn ways to learn it He/she ought to find English is
so interesting and useful that he/she must master it.
And it’s true with the above helpful skills many many students find their ways to
get in English well and they are making in progress in learning English.
15
I think the above tips are practical skills that are necessary for students who really
want to learn, to use English. So, the teacher as well as the students should find out

which are the best ways to learn to practice English in all possible classroom
situations. It can be taught or learnt in a very natural way by means of short
questions and answers, or through games or a short discussion. At the beginning
we find it hard to practice, but if we try, we'll have very good long term results.
Moreover, this not only helps the teachers improve the methods on teaching but
also helps the students feel self-confident in using English now and in future .
