FILM MUSIC
In the early days of the cinema, before sound was introduced, silent films were (36) by a pianist,
or even a small orchestra playing in the cinema itself. One reason for this was to cover up the noise of the
projector. However, a more important role was to provide support for what was going on in the film, and
guide the audience through the story. Different kinds of music were associated with different situations, such
as fights, chases, romantic scenes and so on. Music is also used to identify the geographical location or
historical settings of the story. In (37) individual characters often had their own tune, which could also
indicate what sort of person they were.
Music added something extra to what was happening on the flat screen. It could create
atmosphere and (38) the involvement of the audience, one moment encouraging them to relax, the next
developing a (39) of tension. And all this was done without any words being spoken.
Audiences at that time would have been (40) with the musical language connected with the
traditions of popular theatre, and many of these were transferred to the new medium of the cinema. Today
although the films produced may be technically very different from before, much of the musical history still
remain

BRITISH POLITENESS
Do you, learners of English, ever wonder whether repeating and trying to remember various everyday

English expressions, such as “Excuse me, could you tell me where the nearest taxi rank is?” has any value
other than in exams? Well, I must admit that such things didn’t cross my mind until last February when I got a
letter from the British Council, saying that I had won a language course in England.
The polite question mentioned was the one I had to ask on arrival in Parkston, a picturesque part of Poole
with lots of semi-detached houses on either side of each street. What struck me most was the kindness of an
old lady, who happened to leave Safeway’s just after my getting off the coach. Not only did she show me
where to phone for a taxi, but she also gave me a hand with the luggage. I was really surprised, too, when the
taxi driver got out of the car and helped me put the bags into the boot. I immediately thought of Polish taxi
2
drivers who usually do not make the slightest effort to help you, apart from pressing the right button and
waiting for the boot to open.
In spite of all the stereotypes about reluctance towards foreigners, the English turn out to be an extreme
polite and open nation.
