SUMMARY
Left atrial volume represents powerful outcome predictor in patients with cardiovascular diseases.
Objectives: To determine the relationship between left atrial volume measured by two-
dimensional echocardiography and left ventricular end diastolic measured by cardiac
catheterization and to determine the relationship between left atrial volume and
echocardiographic left ventricular diastolic function parameters.
Method: 52 patients with first acute myocardial infarction in sinus rhythm were selected
consecutively from 1/2005 to 7/2007. Echocardiographic left atrial volume index and left
ventricular diastolic function parameters were measured. Left ventricular end diastolic pressure
was obtained from cardiac catheterization in all patients.
The study showed: Left atrial volume index was strongly correlated with left ventricular end
diastolic pressure (r = 0,78), was moderately correlated with echocardiographic left ventricular
diastolic function parameters and systolic pulmonary artery pressure.



