I. RATIONALE
Nowadays, mankind enters the 21st century, knowledge is increasingly
expanding. Especially, our country is on track to integration, industrialization and
modernization, to the strongly influence that our country requires a large number
of people may have had moral and knowledge. In the current period when our
country was applied education credits of colleges and universities education in
nationwide. Self-study time at home and study group more than students learning
in the classroom. It helps students maximize all aspects such as positive, self
-discipline, initiative, creativity ... it fostering student self- study ability of
practice, the passion for learning and research. Thus, the self-study plays a very
important role in improving the academic achievement of students.
Albert Einstein said: “I never teach my pupils, I only attempt to provide the
conditions in which they can learn.” Even a genius like Albert Einstein also
assessment about self- study, environmental science demonstrate student learning
is important , study habits are the foundation of educational achievement .
Therefore, the self-study is a critical component of every student in general and all

people in particular.
When studying in college or university, some students aware the
importance when they have a sense of self-study or study group, and have many
people to achieve success.
However, everybody didn’t always have good conditions for correctly selfstudy. To arrange a reasonable time, and solve this problem we need to support
from school.
In the recent seminar, the issues related to self-study is more increasingly
being mentioned, the question to ask "How to encourage students to study and act
more aggressively to achieve higher performance?"," how did school management
for self-study activities of the students?" "How did teaching methods will

change?" ... the solution of which is: innovative teaching methods will change
traditional teaching, besides change management, organizational promote positive
self- study of each student.
For that reason, we choose research topics are " The effect of self study on
study achievement of the third year English majored students at Can Tho
University in 2013" as a topic for study subject written materials science to find
some good methods in study.
II. LITERATURE REVIEW
This section reviews the document mention to our research: The effect of
self study on study achievement of the third year English majored students at Can
Tho University in 2013. Purpose of literature review supply some background
information about the advantages of self study, good methods of self study. The
following questions will induct our literature research:
1. What is self study?
2. What are advantages of self study?
3. How can we succeed in self study?
Definition of self study
We found some statements about self study of Tien Giang University

website.
Psychologist N.ARubakin said that self study is getting knowledge by selftaught. Self- learning is a process of knowledge, is experiences about social,
historical practices which was establishing by personal relationships.
In the book “Logical Learning”, R.Retke editor said: “Self study is
completed the duty which is not had in the teaching program at school”.
According to the author Le Khanh Bang, self study is using the intellectual,
thoughtful, psychology to research any science fields.

The advantages of self study
In one study of Forestry University’s group of students about factors
affecting students’ academic grade point average stated that “In the fact, in the
learning process of the students, the average academic scores are driven by many
factors. Among them there are some important factors is academic efforts of
students themselves expressed through time of study, self study, participate in
academic clubs, time to the library to study and research more documents”
According to Le Van Luong, Self Study – Key Success, “Self study
not only help students to constantly improve the quality and efficiency of learning
while sitting in school, but also equip them to capacity, interest, habits, with
regular self-study often methods and lifetime. Thereby helping them to exercise
virtues of self-reliance, less dependent on others, special is teachers in the school.
Since then the quality of their learning will be assessed more substantive. It can be
said self study experiences of them usually transmitted by adults, due to recognize
the relationship between teachers and students or self experience, know from
books, newspapers… Although experiences did not have system properties,
sometime it is imprecise, but it still basis, condition very necessary for every
activities of students. The more experience, there is the more affective activity.”
Besides, self study also helps students get high result in exams “self study before
test will help we muster mind, time for review, complement gap of knowledge,
discovery research many things interesting, find the method. Self study help our

memorize knowledge of each lesson, partial, long, deep and detailed and logic.
This thing helps student exercise better and high result”
According to Nguyen Thi Lan Huong’s essay in National University Hanoi,
she mentioned that self study is root of creation, people will progress further.

Methods of self study
So self-study is necessary to study alone or not? According Dr Chu Hao Deputy Minister of Environment Science Subjects answered the question about
self his experience in self study “Needing speak clearly about self study, people
usually think self study means study alone. No, the best self study is team work. In
my opinion, I still read everyday and never bring work from office go home that
just refer and read. Whenever I want know deeply, I am requested by myself to
write a text about that question. Therefore I must find document to read, ask the
ideas deeply to understand the matter more deeply”.
Another way improving ability was mentioned by Dr Tran Khai Dinh of
Television College: The first importance is students must specify purpose of study.
The second, you need find self study methods appropriate. The third, you should
be patient listen carefully and take note. Finally, students should build a system
skill by themselves.
Self study activity of students can occur at anytime, anywhere. Whenever
students can use cognitive abilities of them to carry out research activities,
discover self-aware, standing in front of all phenomena of the objective world
The awareness of self study is the main factor and not to lack the
introduction of the teacher or professor. The teaching is outside factor. The
teachers have important role in the self study of students. They help their students
to determine the purpose to study and change the methods to teach to be suitable
with the self study of their students. The teacher should increase working in group
to develop the awareness self study of the students.
In conclusion, we found some advantages from succeeds of people who had
awareness on self study. Besides, we got some experiences of the self study and

some the methods to improve ability of self study. Thus, we decided to choose the

topic “The effect of self study on study achievement of the third year English
majored students at Can Tho University in 2013”.
III. RESEARCH AIMS
On conducting the research, we have a general purpose is to study about the
effect of the self study on performance achievement of the third year English
majored students and three specific aims. First, we research about consciousness
of the self study of the third year English majored students. Second, we research
the influences of the self study of them on their achievement. After studying, we
propose some effective methods for the self study of the students. If our research
has many advantages, the long-term aim of us would propose the help of teachers
in Can Tho University to get some effective methods for the self study.
IV.RESEARCH QUESTIONS
Our research is conducting by answering three following questions:
1.

How many hours are students used to the self study everyday?

2.

Does the self study of the third year English majored students

influence their performance achievement?
3.

What should we do for the self study to be effective?

V. HYPOTHESES

Based on our research about the effective self study of the third year
English majored students in Can Tho University, we give a hypothesized that the
self study of them will bring the good result in their study.
VI.RESEARCH METHOD
1.

Design

This experimental research follows a two-group pre-test and post-test
design. The participants in our research are enrolled into 120 students in six the
third year English majored students classes of Can Tho University. The students

will do a test to show the grades and the time they used for self-study in the
previous semesters to compare their grades in two semesters. They also have to
show their motivation in self-study on a questionnaire system to display the roles
of the self-study on the final result of students. The project will last 15 weeks in
two English majored classes of Can Tho University. The project will begin on the
fifth semester and last 15 weeks of class sessions.

♦ Post-test on motivation for self-study

Week 16

In the first class session of the semester, we need the assistance of the
homeroom teachers to choose randomly 20 students every class of six English
majored classes as participants. After that, we will make the appointments with the
students to interview directly about the grades they achieved in the previous
semester. The purpose of the pre-test is to compare the different grades of the
students before and after they do the research. This task will be done in week 1 of
the semester.
Then, the student will begin tick and fill in a questionnaire system. The pretest is based on the standardized making scheme for questions about the time and
the reasons students take less or much time for studying out of class (including the
performance of that task learning or teachers assigned to perform the tasks that the
students study themselves) and the motivations of the students take time for selfstudy from week 2 to week 15 of the fifth semester.
We will check and remind the completion of the participants, then; we will
collect the answers every two weeks from week 2 to week 15. On week 16, the
students will do a post-test to fill the grades they get in that semester. Finally, the
students are also writing comments and evaluate the effects of self-study into their
grades. The questionnaires will be given to students to measure their interest as
well as the motivations in self-study in the fifth semester.
3.

Participants

The participants in my research include 120 students in six the third year
English majored classes of Can Tho University. We choose the students major in
English language studies to participate in our project because self-study is one of
the most important elements to the success of language students to encourage
student spend reasonable time for self-study. The participants are randomly chosen
and put into six group classes. For this reason, we can control group class every

period. The participants will be given reasonable accumulate scores for their
answers to improve their self-imposed when studying or working after that.

4.

Instrument

In our research, we are going to use two instruments to collect the data. Firstly, we
are going to measure students’ motivation for self-study through a pre-test and
post-test questionnaire. Secondly, we will evaluate the self-imposed of students in
two semesters through a pre-test and post-test based on the time rates they spend
for self-study and the grades they get in this semester.
5.

Material

During the fifth semester, we will use the questionnaires about the spending
time of student based on various information sources of many researches of other
domestic colleges and oversea colleges. Besides, we will give the accumulate
score every week if they fill in the questionnaire system sufficiently and carefully.
The score is also based on the logic about time and motivations they get into the
answers with the activities they do at that time.
VII. EXPECTED OUTCOME
The research on the effect of the self study on performance achievement of
the third year English majored students will provide the roles and advantages of
the consciousness of the self study of students. In addition, we can get some
methods to make the self study more effectively. Therefore, the students who have
average academic would get the motivation in their study, to improve their scores.
