When the Moon is not in its new phase, it can be seen on clear days or nights from
anywhere on the surface of Earth if you know when to look. The Moon is the Earth’s only
natural satellite, and has never been given any other specific name. The Moon is about
384,403 kilometers from Earth, and has an approximate diameter of 3,476 km. The Moon is
actually believed to be slowly moving farther away from Earth, at a rate of about 4 cm per
year!
The Moon makes one full orbit around the Earth every 29,5 days. During this period
the Moon enters a series of phrases, which changes the amount of light reflected off its
surface and its visible shape to the naked eye from Earth. The Moon differs from most natural
satellites of other planets in that its orbit is close to the plane of the ecliptic and not in the
Earth’s equatorial plane. Exploration of the Moon began in 1959 when the unanimanned
Luna 2 landed on its surface. Luna 2 was closely followed by Luna 3 in late 1959, which
obtained the first images of the occluded far side of the Moon, and the first people to land on
the Moon came aboard Apollo 11 on that historic night in 1969.

Thanks giving
Thanks giving is celebrated in the US on the fourth Thursday in November. For many
Americans it is the most important holiday apart from Christmas. Schools, offices and most
businesses close for Thanks giving, and many people make the whole weekend a vacation.
Thanks giving is associated with the time when Europeans first came to North America. In
1620 the ship the Mayflowers arrived, bringing about 150 people who today are usually
called Pilgrims. They arrived at the beginning of a very hard winter and could not find
enough to eat, so many of them died. But in the following summer Native Americans showed
them what foods were safe to eat, so that they could save food for the next winter. They held
a big celebration to thank God and the Native Americans for the fact that they had survived.
On Thanks giving there are special television programs and sports events. Thanks giving is
considered the beginning of the Christmas period, and the next day many people go out to
shop for Christmas presents.

Bill Prince-Smith
Bill Prince-Smith was a farmer and a teacher and a dentist before he became a writer
of children's books at the age of 60. Now, thirteen years later, he has written more than 80
books. Every day, he goes into his office and writes. In the evening, he gives the work to his
wife to read. 'She tells me when she doesn't like something,' says Bill. 'My ten grandchildren
don't live near here but they also read my stories and say if they are good or bad.' And so Bill
has learned what young children want to read.
Bill writes about the life in his village and on the farms near it. His fifth book is his
favourite: The Sheepdog is about a farmer and the dog that helps him. “I have always liked
animals,' says Bill, 'and dogs are so clever, they learn very quickly.'
Last year, the book was made into a film with real animals and actors. The filmmakers used the latest computer technology to make people think that the animals are
speaking. Bill was very pleased with the film. 'Sometimes film makers change books, but
they didn't change mine and I love the film.'

Water is necessary for life. People can live only a few days without it. Yet nearly 25 million
people die each year because of it. Both industrial nations and less developed countries are
worried about the quality and quantity of water in the world.
The United Nations named the 1980s the World Water Decade. The UN hoped to provide
pure water for everyone by 1990. One of the problems about water is distribution. Water is
not always distributed where the large population centers are. Some regions get enough rain,
but it is all in one or two short rainy seasons.
Over half of the world is without pure drinking water. Seventy-five percent of all illness is
related to bad water. Million of women and children spend up to six hours a day carrying
water and doing their domestic work, they don’t have time for anything else. In some dry
areas, children stay home from school to help carry water.

III. Read the text below and answer the questions
The Peninsula of Southeast Asia lies directly below India and China, between the
Pacific and Indian Oceans. It is made up of Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and
Laos. Over thousands of the years, this region has a diverse mix of culture and religions.
Much of land here is mountainous, with half a region covered in forest. Most people live in
coastal or lowland regions where they can grow crops such as rice, raise cattles, and catch
fish. In recent years, the electric industry has also become an important part of Southeast
Asian economics, especially in Thailand and Vietnam.
Most people in Southeast Asia live in rural areas rather than cities, and farming is the
most common occupation. The steep mountainous regions are often unsuitable for growing
crops or raising cattles, however, and many farming communities are based in the fertile river
valleys and deltas. Rice is the most important crop in the Southeast Asia. It grows well in wet
lowland areas, such as the Mekong river delta in Viet Nam where the plants can be grown in
paddy fields. Most rice is planted and harvested by women.
36. Which countries does Southeast Asia include?

In many modern countries, people think of a family as a mother, a father and their children.
But this is not the only kind of the family group. In some parts of the world, a family group
has many other members. This kind of large family is called an “extended family” or a “joint
family”.
The joint family includes all living relatives on either the mother’s or the father’s side of the
family. It is made up of grandparents, parents, brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, and cousins.
They live together in a large house or in hut built close together.
Early people probably lived in joint families. They had to be part of a large group in order to
survive. The members of the group help each other hunt. They work together to protect
themselves from dangerous animals and other enemies.
In China, people lived in joint families. When a son married, he and his wife lived at his
parents’ home. In India and Africa, some people still live in joint families. The members of a
joint family share their earnings and property.

III. Read the text below and answer the questions
A cat is one of the strangest creatures on earth. Even though it has lived with man for
thousands and thousands of years – it always seems to be just one step removed from the
jungle! A cat is closely related to such animals as the lion, tiger, and leopard, and in its own
way it behaves like them. For instance, cats lie in wait for their victims, and then spring on
their back, just the way a lion might kill an enemy. It has 18 claws on its feet that it can pull
out and draw back again. What make a cat able to see in the dark? It has eyes that can adjust
themselves to different amounts of light. When there is a bright light, the pupil of the eyes
become narrow slits. When it is dark, the pupils become wide, almost the size of the entire
eye. This does not mean that a cat can see in the absolute darkness, but it needs much less
light than most animals. Because a cat eyes round out from the head, it collects light from a
wide angle. When a cat’s eyes reflect all this light, it seems to glow. Cats may live to be 19 or
20 years old of age, but the average age is 14 years.

people are kept busy cooking traditional foods, buying gifts, and making other preparations.
Certain items deemed to be bought or made are banh chung, dried watermelon seeds, tea,
dried sausages, fruit (fresh and candied), ornamental plants and flowers. Red and yellow
flowers are ideal as they make the house more welcoming. On the New Year's days, only
good comments and wishes can be expressed. Children receive their li xi (or red envelopes
with lucky money inside). People make a visit to family members, neighbors, and close
friends. And people who live apart from their family try to get together on these days. Clearly

CANADA GEESE
Canada Geese are large blue and white birds. When autumn arrives, they have to fly south
where the weather is warmer. The winters are so cold in Canada that the birds die if they stay
there.
Last spring, Bill Lishman found sixteen young Canada Geese on his farm. They had lost
their parents. Bill thought, “These young birds won't know what to do in the autumn”. Bill
had a small plane and he decided ·to teach the birds to follow him. All through the summer,
he went on short trips in his plane and the young geese flew after him. When the cold
weather arrived in autumn, Bill flew to Virginia in the United States, 600 miles south of his
home in Canada. The geese followed him all the way. Bill left the geese in Virginia and
he returned home.
This spring, Bill was waiting for the birds to come back. They didn't arrive, so Bill flew to

Every day many road accidents happen in Hong Kong. Every one, especially children must
learn how to cross the road. A simple code to remember is "STOP, LOOK and LISTEN
BEFORE YOU CROSS".
The Transport Department organized road safety campaigns every year in order to reduce
traffic accidents. Parents and teachers should educate children on road safety. Most schools
have their own School Road Safety Patrols. The school Road Safety Patrols is a uniformed
group. It recruits secondary school students as members. Students in senior forms help fellow
students cross the road correctly and safely on their way to and from school.
When you go out alone, however, what is the best way to cross the road? First, you must find
a safe place to cross. Of course, it is safest to be directed by a policeman or a traffic warden.

Rebecca Stevens
Rebecca Stevens was the first woman to climb Mount Everest. Before she went up the
highest mountain in the world, she was a journalist and lived in a small flat in London.
In 1993, Rebecca left her job and her family and travelled to Asia with some other climbers.
She found that life on Everest is hard. ‘You must carry everything on your back’, she
explained, ‘so you can only take things that you need. You can’t wash on a mountain, and in
the end I didn’t even take a toothbrush. I am usually a clean person but there is no water, only
snow. Water is very heavy so you only take enough to drink!’
When Rebecca reached the top of the Mount Everest on May 17 1993, it was the best
moment of her life. Suddenly she became famous.
Now she has written a book about the trip and people often ask her to talk about it. She has a
new job too, on a science programme on television.
Rebecca is well known today and she has more money, but she still lives in the little flat in
south London among her pictures and books about mountains!

Save the World
We are all destroying the Earth. The seas and rivers are too dirty to swim in. There is
no much smoke in the air that it is unhealthy to live in many of world's cities. We have cut
down so many trees that there are now vast areas of wasteland all over the world. As a result,
farmers in parts of Africa can not grow enough to eat. In certain countries in Asia there is too
little rice. Wild animals are quickly disappearing. For instance, tigers are rare in India now
because we have killed too many. However, it isn't enough simple to talk about the problem.
We must act now before it is too late to do anything about it. Join us now. Save the Earth.
41_________. The seas and rivers aren't polluted now.
