When the Moon is not in its new phase, it can be seen on clear days or nights from anywhere on the surface of Earth if you

know when to look. The Moon is the Earth’s only natural satellite, and has never been given any other specific name. The Moon is about
384,403 kilometers from Earth, and has an approximate diameter of 3,476 km. The Moon is actually believed to be slowly moving farther
away from Earth, at a rate of about 4 cm per year!
The Moon makes one full orbit around the Earth every 29,5 days. During this period the Moon enters a series of phrases,
which changes the amount of light reflected off its surface and its visible shape to the naked eye from Earth. The Moon differs from most
natural satellites of other planets in that its orbit is close to the plane of the ecliptic and not in the Earth’s equatorial plane .
Exploration of the Moon began in 1959 when the unanimanned Luna 2 landed on its surface. Luna 2 was closely followed by Luna 3 in late
1959, which obtained the first images of the occluded far side of the Moon, and the first people to land on the Moon came aboard
Apollo 11 on that historic night in 1969.
36. When can the Moon be seen? - On clear days or nights
37. Is the diameter of the Moon correctly 3,476 km? - No, it isn’t.
38. How many days does the Moon orbit around the Earth?

- 29,5 days.

39. Why is the Moon unlike most natural satellites of other planets?
- Because its orbit is close to the plane of the ecliptic and not in the Earth’s equatorial plane.
40. When did the people land on the Moon?
II.

- In 1969.

Bill Prince-Smith
Bill Prince-Smith was a farmer and a teacher and a dentist before he became a writer of children's books at the age of 60.

Now, thirteen years later, he has written more than 80 books. Every day, he goes into his office and writes. In the evening, he gives the
work to his wife to read. 'She tells me when she doesn't like something,' says Bill. 'My ten grandchildren don't live near here but they also
read my stories and say if they are good or bad.' And so Bill has learned what young children want to read.
Bill writes about the life in his village and on the farms near it. His fifth book is his favourite: The Sheepdog is about a
farmer and the dog that helps him. “I have always liked animals,' says Bill, 'and dogs are so clever, they learn very quickly.'
Last year, the book was made into a film with real animals and actors. The film-makers used the latest computer technology to
make people think that the animals are speaking. Bill was very pleased with the film. 'Sometimes film makers change books, but they didn't
change mine and I love the film.'
36. When did Bill Prince-Smith become a writer?

- At

the age of 60.

37. How many books has Bill written since he started writing?

The Peninsula of Southeast Asia lies directly below India and China, between the Pacific and Indian Oceans. It is made up of

Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. Over thousands of the years, this region has a diverse mix of culture and religions.
Much of land here is mountainous, with half a region covered in forest. Most people live in coastal or lowland regions where they
can grow crops such as rice, raise cattles, and catch fish. In recent years, the electric industry has also become an important part of
Southeast Asian economics, especially in Thailand and Vietnam.

Most people in Southeast Asia live in rural areas rather than cities, and farming is the most common occupation. The steep
mountainous regions are often unsuitable for growing crops or raising cattles, however, and many farming communities are based in the
fertile river valleys and deltas. Rice is the most important crop in the Southeast Asia. It grows well in wet lowland areas, such as the
Mekong river delta in Viet Nam where the plants can be grown in paddy fields. Most rice is planted and harvested by women.
36. Which countries does Southeast Asia include?

- Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos.

37. Is the forest occupy about ¼ total lands in the Southeast Asia?

- No, it isn’t. It is a half.

38. Where do people in Southeast Asia live? Why?
- Most people live in coastal or lowland regions because they can grow crops and catch fish there..
39. What is the most common crop in Southeast Asia?

- Rice.

40. Where do people often grow crops in Southeast Asia?

- In wet lowland areas.

A cat is one of the strangest creatures on earth. Even though it has lived with man for thousands and thousands of years – it

always seems to be just one step removed from the jungle! A cat is closely related to such animals as the lion, tiger, and
leopard, and in its own way it behaves like them. For instance, cats lie in wait for their victims, and then spring on their back, just the
way a lion might kill an enemy. It has 18 claws on its feet that it can pull out and draw back again. What make a cat able to see in the dark?
It has eyes that can adjust themselves to different amounts of light. When there is a bright light, the pupil of the eyes become
narrow slits. When it is dark, the pupils become wide, almost the size of the entire eye . This does not mean that a cat can see in the
absolute darkness, but it needs much less light than most animals. Because a cat eyes round out from the head, it collects light from
a wide angle. When a cat’s eyes reflect all this light, it seems to glow. Cats may live to be 19 or 20 years old of age, but the average
age is 14 years.
36. Why is the cat one of the strangest creatures on earth?
- Because it always seems to be just one step removed from the jungle.
37. Which animals does a cat have close relationship with? Why?
- A cat always behaves like the lion, tiger, and leopard, so it is closely related to such animals.
38. Why can a cat see in the dark?
Because a cat eyes round out from the head, it collects light from a wide angle.
39. Which is the difference of a cat’s eyes to different lights?
- When it is light, the pupil of the eyes become narrow slits. When it is dark, the pupils become wide.

40. Is the normal age of a cat 19.5 years?
V.

- No, it isn’t. The average age of a cat is 14 years

CANADA GEESE

Canada Geese are large blue and white birds. When autumn arrives, they have to fly south where the weather is warmer. The winters
are so cold in Canada that the birds die if they stay there.
Last spring, Bill Lishman found sixteen young Canada Geese on his farm. They had lost their parents. Bill thought, “These young
birds won't know what to do in the autumn”. Bill had a small plane and he decided ·to teach the birds to follow him. All through the
summer, he went on short trips in his plane and the young geese flew after him. When the cold weather arrived in autumn, Bill flew to
Virginia in the United States, 600 miles south of his home in Canada. The geese followed him all the way. Bill left the geese in
Virginia and he returned home.

This spring, Bill was waiting for the birds to come back. They didn't arrive, so Bill flew to Virginia to get them. He looked for them for two
weeks but he couldn't find them. When he arrived back home, Bill found the geese waiting for him. They had found their way home
without him!
36. What do Canada Geese often do when autumn arrives?

- They have to fly south where the weather is warmer.

37. How many young Canada Geese did Bill Lishman find on his farm last spring?

- Sixteen.

38. Why did Bill go on short trips in his plane all through the summer? - He wanted to teach the birds to fly.
39. Did Bill want the geese to stay at his home for the winter? - No, he didn’t. He left the geese in Virginia in the United States.
40. Why didn’t Bill find the geese in Virginia?

VI.

- Because the geese found the way home themselves.

Rebecca Stevens

Rebecca Stevens was the first woman to climb Mount Everest. Before she went up the highest mountain in the world, she was a
journalist and lived in a small flat in London.
In 1993, Rebecca left her job and her family and travelled to Asia with some other climbers. She found that life on Everest is hard. ‘You
must carry everything on your back’, she explained, ‘so you can only take things that you need. You can’t wash on a mountain,
and in the end I didn’t even take a toothbrush. I am usually a clean person but there is no water, only snow. Water is very heavy so
you only take enough to drink!’
When Rebecca reached the top of the Mount Everest on May 17 1993, it was the best moment of her life. Suddenly she became
famous.
Now she has written a book about the trip and people often ask her to talk about it. She has a new job too, on a science programme on
television.

other new technology, there is no longer any need for school buildings, formal classes, or teachers. Perhaps, this will be true one day,
but it is hard for me to imagine a world without schools. In fact we need to look at how we can use new technology to make schools better
not to eliminate them. We should invent a new kind of school that is linked to libraries, museums, science centres, laboratories, and
even companies. Experts could give talks on video or over the internet. TV networks and local stations could develop programming
about things students are actually studying in school.

A history of air travel

In 1783, two French brothers built the first balloon to take people into the air. One hundred and twenty years later, the Wright
brothers built the first plane with an engine and flew in it. This was in the United States. Then, in 1918, the US Post Office began the
first airmail service.
Aeroplane changed a lot in the next thirty years. Then, in the 1950s, aeroplanes became much faster because they had jet engines.
In 1976, Concorde was built in the UK and France. It is the faster passenger plane in the world and it can fly at 2500 kilometers an hour,
so the journey from London to New York is only four hours.
Today, millions of people travel by aeroplanes, and it is difficult to think of a world without them.
