What and Where

II. Pre-Reading :

- Ask ss to close their books.
- Tell the Ss that they are going to read about a rice-cooking festival, and this
festival has 3 competitions: water-fetching, fire-making and rice-cooking.
- Put 6 sentences on the board. Two sentences relate to each competition. Ss work
in pairs and predict if the sentences are about the water- fetching competition, the
fire-making competition or the rice-cooking competition.
+ Rubbing pieces of bamboo together (fire- making)
+ There’s a river about one kilometer away (water- fetching).
+ It’s made in traditional way (fire- making)
+ The most delicious one is the winner (rice- cooking).
+ Each runner must take a bottle (water- fetching).
+ The teams remove the husk (rice- cooking).
III. Listen and read:
1. Read and check predictions:
- Read the dialogue aloud once or play the tape. Then allow Ss to read it silently
for about 5 minutes.
- Ss correct their predictions.

2. True or False statements:
- Put the true or false sentences on the board.
- Ss read again and check the boxes.
- Ask some Ss to come to the board and write the corrected sentences.
- Chck and correct.

special event (Tet holiday ) and listen for details.

*. Skill : Speaking and listening.
* Techniques: Practice in pairs.
*.Teaching aids: cassette, tape ...
*.Anticipated problem : Some Ss will get difficulty in speaking.

*SPEAKING:
1. Set the scene: Mrs Quyen is talking to Lan about the preparations for Tet.
2. Ordering the dialogue.



- Ask Ss to read the dialogue on page 123 and put the sentences in the correct
order.
- Call on some pairs to give their answers.
- Give feedback and correct.

3. Practice speaking .
- T explains the request of the exercise.
- Choose one festival the Ss enjoy (example: a school festival).

1 Pre-listening:
a. Set the scene: "The Robinson family are making preparations for Tet. They want
to buy things to make it a traditional festival as Vietnamese people do."
What do you think they want to buy ?
b. Gap-fill prediction:
- Ask Ss to read the statemens on page 124.
- Get Ss to predict the words in the gaps .
- Write Ss’ predictions on the board.
2. While-listening:
- Play the tape (2 or 3 times)


- Ss listen to and fill in the gaps.
- Call ss to give their answers and check if Ss' guesses are right or not..
- Ss listen again and correct.

2. Matching :
a. It has been said he was the patron saint of children, a fat jolly man who wore a
red suit and gave children presents on Christmas Eve.
b. The custom of decorating it and putting it in a common place, spread throughout
Europe to America.

the Church did not like them but later they became popular .

report on a festival they have joined.

*. Skill : Writing.
*. Techniques : Practice in pairs and group.
*.Teaching aids : Poster
*.Anticipated problems: Weaker Ss can’t get difficulties in writing a report
completely.
B- Contents.
*Warmer: Kim’s game.
- Show the picture on page 126 ---> Ss observe it carefully.
- Ask Ss to look at the picture for about 20 seconds, put it away.
- Ask some questions:
a. How many people are there in the picture? What are they doing ?
b. Name all the things in the picture.
- Ss write down their answers on the board.
- Give feedback and correct.

I. Pre-writing: Open predictions
- Hang on the poster (ex 1- p.127 ) on the board.

II. While-writing.
- Explain the request to Ss --> Ask Ss to give a festival to write.
- Divide class into groups of 6.
- Ask Ss to answer the questions from a -> g on page 127.
- Encourage Ss to give out many opinions.
- After answering the questions, guide Ss to combine the answers to make a
report by using conjunctions: after, before, finally ...etc.
- T goes around and monitors, help Ss with their work.
- Call on some Ss to read the reports and ask a student to write his/ her reports on
the board.
III. Post-Writing:

Write-it-up.

- Call representative of each group to write the report on the board.

- Call on some Ss to read the reports
- Correct the mistakes together.
- T gives a model report.
*Suggested report:
Tet is a national and family festival. It is an occasion for every Vietnamese to
have a good time while thinking about the last year and the next year. At Tet, spring
fairs are organized, steets and public buildings are well decorated and almost all
shops are crowded with people shopping for Tet. At home, everything is tidied,
special food is cooked, offerings of food, fresh water, flowers are made on the
family altar. First-footing is made when the first visitor comes and childfen are
given lucky money wrapped in a red tidy envelope. Tet is also a time for peace and


love. During Tet, children often behave brightly and friends, relatives and neighbors
give each other best wishes for the new year.
- Have Ss copy it down.
IV. Homework
- Finish writing on the notebook.
- Do exercises in workbook.
- Prepare for next lesson: Language Focus.

-> Form : S + was/ were + PII + … (+ by O).
* Present perfect tense: S + has/ have + been + PII + … (+ by O).
