I. Warm up:

Getting started

- Show Ss the pictures.
- Have Ss read the names of the famous world landmarks
- Have Ss match the names to the correct pictures
- Call on some Ss to give their answers

II. Listen and Read:

2. Ordering:
*Set the scene: "Hoa, Nhi and Nga are playing a language game called guessing
game. How does this game work? Rearrange the Statements in the right order of
the game."
- Put the statements chart on the board.
- Ask Ss to read the statements and put them in the right order.

* How to play the guessing game:
a. B asks questions to find out who or what is.
b. A thinks of a famous person or place.
c. B wins if he/ she can guess the correct answer.
d. A gives B a clue.
e. B loses if he/ she cannot guess the correct answer.
f. A can only answer "yes" or "no".
- Have Ss guess the order.
3. Read and check
- Have Ss listen and repeat the dialogue on page 131, 132.
- Have Ss read the dialogue individually and check their prediction.

She said: “What’s that? I don’t know how to play it”.

*Use: Reduced form of an indirect question.
- Eg: I understand what you said to me.
I know what to do.
IV. Homework:
- Learn by heart the dialogue and the form.

Lesson 2/ 83 : Speak + Listen
A- Aims: By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able:
• To practice making ‘yes/ no’ question in oder to guess a place.
• To introduce reported ‘yes/ no’ questions.
• To practice constructing and saying reported ‘yes/ no’ questions.
• To listen to an advertisement, find and correct mistakes.

2. Question and answer drill
- Ask Ss to write Yes/ No questions about 10 places in the box, using the
information in the matching. Ss work in groups of 5.
- Monitor and help if necessary.
- Have Ss ask and answer the questions, check Yes/ No.
* Suggested questions :
1. Have they just built the Effel Tower in Paris ?
2. Is the Empire State Building located in New York ?
3. Are the Petronas Twin Towers located in Singapore ?
4. Is the Great Wall situated in Japan ?
5. Is the Great Barrier Reef in Australia ?

3. Grammar drill:
- Set the scene: T. asks st a question.
T: Is Hue Citadel in the Central Vietnam ?
S: Yes, it is .

T says: I asked Lan if Hue Citadel was in the Central Vietnam. She said that it was.
*Model sentences:
I asked Lan If /whether Hue Citadel was in the Central Vietnam.
*Form :
S + asked/ wondered/ wanted to know + O + if/ whether + S +V...


*Use: (to) say -> (to) ask/ want to know...
4. Practice:
- Ask Ss to practice speaking with questions.
- Ask students to look at the dialogue in ‘Getting started and Listen and Read’ and
find the three questions that Hoa and Nhi ask Nga. (It is in Asia? It is in
American?...)
- Write the questions on the board, then write the first question in reported speech :
Hoa asked Nga if it was in Asia.
- Ask students to give you Nga’s answer and the write it in reported speech: Nga
said that it wasn’t.
- Student work in pairs and transform the other questions and answer into reported
speech following the model.
II. Listening:
1. Prediction:
- Have them work in pairs: Read the and guess out 4 mistakes.
2. While-Listening:
- Have Ss listen to the tape and check their answers. (4 mistakes)
- Listen again and correct the mistakes.

- Set the scene: Imagine you have visited a place recently. Write a letter to a friend

+ how to get there (by bus, plane, train, ….)

to answer.
- Ask Ss to write the letter in their notebooks.

with if and whether.

I. Passive forms:
1. Revision:
- Form: S + be + PII + … + by O.
+ Present simple tense: S + am/ is/ are + PII + … + by O.
+ Future simple tense: S + will/ shall + be + PII + … + by O.
+ Past simple tense:


S + was/ were + PII + … + by O.

+ Present perfect tense: S + have/ has + been + PII + … + by O.
2. Practice:
- Have ss look at the exercise 1 on page 136 and choose the right verbs in the box
for the gaps in the sentences.
- Give Ss 5 verbs in the box.
- Have Ss write the past participle form of these verbs.

II. Indirect questions with if and whether.
1. Set the scence: Yesterday, Nga and Nhi talked about My Son, one of the world
Cultural Heritages of Vietnam.
- Ask Ss to report the questions Nhi asked Nga using reported speech.
- Call on some ss to resay the use of the Indirect Yes/ No question if necessary.
- Model the first question and ask ss to listen.
Example: Do you know My Son, Nga ?
-> Nhi asked Nga if she knew My Son.
Or: Nhi asked Nga whether she knew My Son.
2. Practice: Language Focus 2 (p 136, 137).
- Ask ss to report what Nhi asked Nga. Have Ss do the same with b, c, d, e, f.
- Call on some Ss to write them on the board.
*Answer key:
b b. Nhi asked Nga if/ whether it was far from HN.
c. Nhi asked Nga if/ whether My Son was in Quang Nam province.

III. Questions words before to - infinitive:
- Nga answered Nhi’s question. She gave Nhi some additional information. Use the
words to write about the information that Nga gave to Nhi.
- Model the first sentence and ask ss to listen.
Example:
a. tell/ how/ go there.
-> Nga told Nhi how to go there.
+ Form: S + V + question word + to - infinitive + O.

- Have ss do the same with b, c, d, e.
*Answer key:
b. Nga told Nhi where to get tickets.
c. Nga pointed out where to buy souvenirs.
d. Nga advised Nhi how to go from My Son to Hoi An.
e. Nga told Nhi what to do there during the visit.
IV. Verb + to - infinitive:
- Verbs -> decide, agree, refuse, promise, threaten, offer, attempt, manage, fail,
plan, arrange, hope, appear, seem, pretend, afford, learn (how), tend.
Example:

I decided to go for a run.

- Note: Modal Verb + V(bare).
-> can, could, will, shall,would, should, may, might, must, ought to, have to
Eg: I can speak English.
IV. Homework:
- Redo the exercise into notebooks.
- Do all exercises in workbook.
- Revise U12, U13 and U14.
