THE ‘REAL’ PROVERBS
1. A friend in need … IS A FRIEND INDEED.
Meaning: This means that a friend who helps you when you really need help is
a true friend.
2. A hungry man … IS AN ANGRY MAN.
Meaning: One who does not get what he needs is a frustrated person and will
be provoked to rage very easily
3. It takes two to … MAKE A QUARREL.
Meaning: An argument is never only one person's fault.; If the other person

refuses to participate, there cannot be an argument.

Sue: I think Dan ought to apologize for arguing with me.
Mother: I think it's not just his fault. It takes two to make a quarrel, dear.
Maybe you ought to apologize to him.
4. It's never too late … TO MEND.
Meaning: You're never too old to change your ways. Learning is always possible.
5. Great talkers … ARE LITTLE DOERS.
Meaning: Most of those people who talk a lot and are always teaching others
usually do not do much work.
6. We never miss the water … TILL THE WELL RUNS DRY .
Meaning: People are not grateful for what they have until they lose it.

Jill: I never realized what a good friend Jeanie was until she moved away.
Jane: You never miss the water till the well runs dry.
7. Every dog … HAS ITS DAY.
Meaning: Everyone gets a chance eventually.

Don't worry, you'll get chosen for the team. Every dog has its day. You may
become famous someday. Every dog has his day.
8. It's no use … CRYING OVER SPILT MILK.
Meaning: Do not be upset about making a mistake, since you cannot change
that now.

I know you don't like your new haircut, but you can't change it now. It's no
use crying over spilled milk. OK, so you broke the drill I lent you. Don't cry
over spilled milk.
9. God helps those who … HELP THEMSELVES.
Meaning: You cannot depend solely on divine help, but must work yourself to
get what you want.


You can't spend your days waiting for a good job to find you. God helps
those that help themselves. If you want a better education, start studying.

Meaning: It is easier to find fault in other people's actions or methods than to
do it properly or correctly.
