GETTING STARTED + LISTEN AND READ

A. Aim of the lesson:
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to read the dialouge about the
questions in an oral exam and get more practice with reported speech.

- Lan is talking to Paola about the oral examination she has had.
4. While-reading.
- 1st reading: Listening to the tape (Pointing every word)
- 2nd reading: Reading the dialogue and then give the pre-questions answers


Now you read the conversation again and see what exactly the examiner asked
Lan. - Give the correct answer keys

5. Post-reading.
* Oral speaking
- S1 is examiner and S2 is the examinee in an oral examination. S2 uses the
personal information to answer the examiner’s questions.
* Review structure: Reported speech
- Get Ss to find out the indirect speech in a dialogue from the direct speech in the
poster :
-Eg:

1. What is your name? -> She asked me what my name was....

a. Wh – questions:

6. Homework.
− Read and translate the text.
- Answer the questions (2.b – P.33) again.

What and Where

I. Pre-speaking:
Now you in group of three, play the role of Thu,Tam and Kim and persuade
your partner to attend the school you would like to study. Use the expressions in
the box as prompts.

- Students in groups of three read the information about the three centers of English

II. While− speaking:
− A goup of 3 students – Do in group work
− Each student in each group plays the role of Thu, Tam or Kim to persuade two
rest to attend the English language summer course abroad they like, and the two
rest reply the persuasion.
* Example exchange:
Tam: I think we should go to the Seattle School of English in the USA. You can
stay with Vietnamese friends.
Kim: I disagree because we can’t practice speaking English with native speakers.
Thu: Why don’t we go to the Brighton Language Center in the United Kinhdom?
If we go there, we can live in a dormitory on campus.
Tam: But the course is too expensive. It costs US $2.000
Kim: What do you think about the Brisbane Institute of English in Australia?
Thu: I think it’s quite close to Vietnam.
Tam: And we can enjoy the beautiful scenery there.
Kim: If we go there, we can stay with an Australia family to discover their culture
and practice English as well.


Thu: Peple say that they have a good way of teaching English and the course is
acceptable. It cost US $1200
Tam: Let’s go to Australia to attend that course
Kim: I absolutely agree with you. How about you, Thu?
Thu: Of course. Me, too.
III. Post– speaking:
* Demonstration:
- Teacher asks 2 or 3 groups to (demonstrate their conversation) converse in front
of the class.
- They may not follow the example in the textbook.
* Correction:

- Teacher corrects the students’ mistakes if necessary
- Teacher adds some more information/ or asks the rest student to add some more
information if necessary
IV. Homework:
- Make another conversations between Thu, Tam and Kim
- Prepare for Listening (4. LISTEN)

LISTENING


(Period 22)
A. Aim of the lesson:
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to listen for information and
identify the correct information about Nga’s studying English

1. Warm−up.
* Information transmitting
- Two groups of 8 volunterrs (each group of 4)
- They whisper the sentence to their teammate (turn by turn) and the last student

has to write the sentence onto the board.
- Which group finishing writing first will win the game
** Suggested sentences.
1. I want to improve my writing/ listening skill
2. English is an interesting language and it’s very useful.

- Ss listen to a conversation between Nga and Kate and check their predict.

* Correct: c. She works for an international bank in Ha Noi.
e. Her listening is terrible.
(This is her biggest problem. People talk very quickly and she can’t understand
them)
III. Post- listening:
- Discuss these questions : What aspects of learning English do/don’t you like?

Why? Why not? Which skill(s) are you good at? What can you do to improve your
listening English? How much time do you spend on your listening? When.....
- Writing about Nga’s studying English (use information from the listening)
*Suggested writing:
Nga works for an international in Hanoi. She is studying English for her job. She
learnt English at school and at university. She needs to improve her writing
because she has forgotten a lot of it and her listening is terrible. People speak very
quickly, she can’t understand them. So she had to go to England to attend an
English course. And now, she is studying with Kate’s family in London to study
English. She hopes she can talk to people from all over the world, and understand
her favorite English songs.
- Review reported speech with state ments: S + said (that) ...............


IV. Homework:
- Complete writing about Nga’s studying English. Workbook: Ex.1 (P.27)
- Prepare new vocabulary in “Read” (P.36)

Nga:

I’m from Viet Nam.

Why are you studying English here?

both morning and evening classes with both beginner and intermediate levels And
the classes start early November−on 3rd November.

II. While- writing:
- Ss read the advertisements in 5. READ again, choose one of the schools they
want to attend to improve their English.Write a letter of inquiry to the institution
requesting for more information about the courses and fees. Their writing should
closely follows the outline in the book and it should appropriately consist of 4
main parts.
- Suppose that you want to attend an English Summer course. You need the
following information:
- When does the course start?/Can you tell me when the course starts ?
- How long does the course last?/Can you tell me how long the course lasts?
- How much is the course? / I’d like to know how much the course is?
- How many hours a week is it?/Can you tell me how many hours a week it is?
- How many students are there in a class?/ ’d like to know how many Ss …?

I started to learn 4 years ago. My speaking is pretty good. However, I can’t write
very well. English grammar is difficult for me. So I want to improve my grammar
and writing skill as well.
Could you please provide me with more information about the length of the
course and fees for beginners? If it’s necessary I can supply my record of English

a. Modal verbs with “if”: can, may, must, ought to, might, ……

Ex1: Complete the sentences. Use the modal verbs in brackets and the information
