Unit 6: An excursion
Lesson 1: Reading
Time: 45 minutes
I- Objectives:
1. Educational aims: Pupil can know more about the famous beauty spots
in Viet Nam such as Thien Mu Pagoda in Hue, Ha Long bay in Quang
Ninh, the one Pillar Pagoda in Ha Noi, the Valley of Love in Da Lat.
2. Know ledge:
a) General know ledge: Pupils can understand the letter of the famous
beauty spots in the North of Viet Nam such as Thay Pagoda, and Huong
Pagoda.
b) Language:
- New words: have some days off, rock foumation, caves, a two day trip,
a night campfine, let someone stay the night away from home.
3. Skills: Reading for gist and for specific infomation.
II- Teaching aids: Picturer showing various beatuty spots:

1) Warm up (4mn)
- Question: - Work in groups of four or five pupils discussing
this question
"What do you like doing when you are free? " - The representative of the groups present their
idea in front the class:
+ Travelling to big cities


+ Visiting their friends or relatives
+ Climbing the mountains
+ Going fishing (going swimming)
+ Going to the beach
+ Staying at home, doing the house work.
2) Before you read (8mn)
a) - Ask Ps to open their books - Work in pairs
- Ask Ps to guess the name of these places by
matching the photos with the infomation below
- Read the infomation carefully then match the
photos with it
- Go around the classroom, explain the meaning
of some words if Ps need
- Guess the name of these places then tell their
friends and T
+ Picture 1: Thien Mu Pagoda (d)
+ Picture 2: Ha Long bay (b)
+ Picture 3: The one pillar Pagoda (a)

- Questions:
+ Where are they ? - Thien Mu Pagoda is in Hue
Ha Long bay is in Quang Ninh
The one-Pillar Pagoda is in Ha Noi
Valley of Love is in Da Lat
+ Which place would you like to visit and why ? --> I would like to visit Ha Long bay because I
have never come there....
b) Ask Ps to close their books, then choose a
suitable to fili in each blank (give / have / make /

stay)
+ to ......... a few days off --> Work in pairs
+ To have a few days off
+ to ...........a two-day trip
+ to........... the night away from home + To make a two day trip
+ to ..........our love to them + To stay the night away from home
+ To give our love to them
- Explain the meaning of these expressions
3) While you read (20mn)
a) - Ask Ps to open their books - Open their books
- Read the letter loudly - Listen and underline the above expressions
- Make some questions so that Ps can
understand the use of those expressions
- Answers
+ Is Lan's school going to have some days off? + Yes, it is
+ What are they going to do ? + They are going to visit some caves near Ha Noi
+ How long is it ? + It's a two day trip
+ Do Lan's parents let her stay the night away
from home ?
+ Yes, they do
+ What did Lan write at the end of the letter ? + She gave her love to Minh's parents and sister
b) Task 1:
- Ask Ps to read the letter silently - Read the leter silently
- T explains the meaining of some new words --> Listen and read the new words loudly
+ caves
(eg: Phong Nha cave is in Quang Binh)
+ rock formation

+ A night camp fire

- Ask Ps to complete each of the sentences by
choosing the best answer A, B, C or D.
- Work in pairs, doing the task
- Check Ps' answers 1. C

c) Task 2:
- Ask Ps to answer the questions - Read the given questions
- Find the information in the letter to answer the
questions
- Check Ps' answers - Work in pairs to have the best answers.
+ Question 1 + After the first term ends
+ Question 2 + Because they have just studied rock formations
and they have never been inside a cave
+ Question 3 + It's 20 kilometres away
+ Question 4 + Having a two day trip and spending a night
together by a campfire
+ Question 5 + She's anxious about her parents' permission.
They don't want to let her stay the night away
from home.
d) Grammatical note
- Instruct the way to use the phrase showing the
time which is used as Adjective
--> Listen
- Raise the question ---> Answer
How long is Lan's excursion to Thay Pagoda ? It's one day
- So we say
It's a one day excursion

- Have Ps read the letter again to find another
phrase which is similarly formed
- Work in pairs finding it: a two-day trip
- Explain how to form these phrases
4) After you read (10mn)
Have Ps fill each blank with a suitable word from
the box
- Work in pairs
- T walks around the class and offers ideas and
comments when Ps need help
- Some Ps are selected at random to provide the
answers in front of the class

Time: 45 minutes
I- Objectives:
1- Educational aims: Ps can know how to get an interesting excursion.

2- Know ledge:
a) Genegal knowledge: Ps can express their ideas to get suitable seats for
themselves and their friends and know how to express the agreement or
disagreement with other ideas.
b) Language: New words: sundeck / sunburnt
c) Skills: Fluency in expressing opinions
d) Methods: Intergrated, mainly communicative.
II- Teaching aids: Pictures: a part of Lake Michigan, a plan of
seats.
III- Procedurs:

1) Warm up (4 mn)
- Look at it
- Hang the picture of lake Michigan - Work in groups , choosing the seats they like
best
- Question " If you are going on a boat trip on
this lake, which seats will you choose ?
+ Seats are not in the sundeck
+ Seats are non air- conditioned
+ Seats are in the sundeck
+ Seats are air - conditioned
- Walk around the class, helpPs with the words if
necessary. - The representatives of groups present thei r
ideas in front of the class
- Ask them for the reason. - Ps can answer in different ways
- Introduce the new lesson.
2) Task 1 (8mm)
- Introduce the situation - Listen
"Tim's is class is going on a boat trip on Lake
Michigan in Chicago" and have Ps read the

information a bout some of the participants and
know which seats they like
- Work in groups reading and taking note the wish
of each person

- Check the understanding of Ps - The representatives of groups
Present their ideas in front of the class
+ Mrs Andrew: not want to sit on the sundeck,
need to see all the students
+ Susan: Want to be near Mary, not want to get
sunburmt
+ Mary: need plenty of fresh air to avoil travel
sickness
+ Tim: like to sit in the sun, want to be by himself
+ John: not like air-conditioning, like to take
photographs
+ Sam: never been on a boat before, want a good
view
3) Task 2 (20mn)
a) - Ask Ps to look at the seat plan - Look at it
- Explain the classification of different areas, in
the seat plan
- Listen
- Have Ps read it and decide the best seat for
each person
- Work in groups
- Check - The representatives of groups present their
answers
+ Seats which aren't in the sundeck but can help

see all the students: seats 46, 43, 40, 45, 34 (Mrs
Andrew)
+ Seats which have plenty of fresh air: Seats 31,
37, 19, 20, 26, 32 (Mary)
+ Seats which aren't air-conditioned, suitble for
taking photographs: seats 10, 11, 12 (John)
+ Seats which are in the sundeck seats 1, 6 (Tim)
+ Seats which can help a good view, safe, seats
16, 29, 34 (Sam)
b) - Ask Ps to find the most suitable seat for
each person, basing on the given information
- Read the conducted conversation
- Suggest some useful expressions so that Ps
can conduct other conversation better

+ I think Mary should
+ She had better
+ It's not a good idea because
+ Seat 30 would be better

- Conduct another conversation with one pupil
+ I think Mrs Andrew had better sit in seat 12 + No, that's not good idea because, it's in the
sundeck and she doesn't like it. What about seat
34 ?
+ Ok. I think she will like it.
- Work in groups, conducting conversations

- Walk around the classroom, check and help
them
- Two groups present their conversations
4) Task 3 (10mn)
- Have Ps tell their friends which seats are most
suitable for them
- Work in pairs and tell their T and friends about
their decision
5) Homework (4 mn)
- Write complete sentences to tell about their
arrangement for seats and of their friends, giving
the reasons clearly
