I. Social relationship
In social science, a social relation or social interaction is any relationship between two or
more individuals.
Meeting new people
In American society, informality is valued very highly.
People are not judged according to the families they were born into but by how hard they work and how they contribute to the society.
They tend to become informal with each other very quickly. Therefore, it is very common in USA that if you see a person in the eye (if
your looks connect with other person) when you are walking down the street or anywhere in a building, to say a friendly phrase. They
smile a lot and talk easily to strangers, sometimes share personal stories.
In an intentional first meeting, Americans often have customary handshake.
Americans rarely use both hands to shake. They only embrace in an affectionate way to close friends or family members.
In first meeting, they do not ask about their age, income, religion, politics, and sexuality
The American concept of friendship
Fluid and dynamic.
U.S. friendship is typified by warmth, informality, and other signs of acceptance, even toward comparative strangers.
People from other cultures become confused because those whom they would consider mere acquaintances are called "friends" by U.S.
Americans and because the warm manner of U.S. Americans leads them to expect a degree of commitment that the U.S. Americans do
not feel and would find difficult to accept.
Relationships prescribed by roles
The United States has been described as a “low-context culture”
There are fewer situations in which people’s behavior is governed by widely agreed-upon rules
-
Customer: Americans tend to show their respect for the ideals of equality and individual dignity.
Tenant: A tenant’s responsibilities are normally made explicit in the lease.
Neighbor: Some neighborhoods are more friendly than others, meaning that more people in the neighborhood know each other
and that the neighbors socialize with each other
-
Co-worker: The boss says “Good morning” in a pleasant voice to the secretary and the file clerk; the latter smile and say “Good
morning” back
