I. Past simple:
1. Form: (+) S + V-ed ( regular) + O
V( Column 2) ( irregular)
(-) S + didnt + V(inf) + O
(?) Did + S + O.......?
2. Quy tắc thêm ed:
- Nếu động từ có tận cùng bắng e thì ta chỉ cần thêm d
- Nếu động từ có tận cùng : phụ âm + y. Ta chuyển y-> i rồi thêm ed.
- Nếu động từ có tận cùng: nguyên âm đơn + phụ âm. Ta nhân đôi phụ âm rồi
thêm đuôi ed.
- Không nhân đôI những phụ âm cuối nh: x, w, y.
3. Cách phát âm đuôi ed:
- Nếu động từ có tận cùng bằng: /t/; /d/ thì ed đọc là /id/.
- Nếu những động từ nào tận cùng bằng những âm nh: /f/; /k/; /p/; /s/; / /;/ /;
/ks/, thì ed thêm và đọc là /t/.
- Các trờng hợp còn lại ed đọc là /d/

I. Past simple with Wish:
1. Form:
Wish + (that) + Simple past Clause = If only + (that) + Simple past Clause

Đối với động t TOBE, WERE có thể ding ch tất cả các ngôi
Eg: I could speak English now = If only I could speak English now.
I wish he were a doctor = If only he were a doctor.
2. Cách chia:
* Diễn tả một tình huống không có thật ở hiện tại, và tình huống này đợc
diễn tả bằng thì quá khứ đơn. (Lu ý rằng thì QKĐ ở đây không ám chỉ tình huống xảy ra
trong quá khứ, mà nó chỉ cho thấy rằng tình huống đó là không có thật.
E.g: Iwish I lived in a palace. (but I dont. I live in a flat).
* Diễn tả sự hối tiếc về một tình huống ở hiện tại mà bạn muốn thay đổi.
E.g: A: Can you help me with this exercise?
B: I wish, I could, but Im busy at the moment.
* Would là quá khứ đơn của Will, đợc dùng trong mệnh đề sau Wish để
diễn tả hành động trong tơng lai mà bạn muốn nó xảy ra.
E.g: I wish my mother would come with me tonight. I dont want to be home alone.
II. Exercise:
Exercise 1: Finish each of the following sentences in such a way that it is as
similar as possible in meaning to the original sentence.

* T writes the exercise in the board, Ss write down into their notebook, then they
do themselves. After that Ss and T correct.
1. Ba is sorry that he is not hard-working.
Answer key: -> Ba wishes he were hard-working.
2. I’m sorry my mother won’t come tomorrow.
-> I wish mother would come tomorrow.
3. It’s a pity Xuan is sick today.
-> If only Xuan weren t sick today.’
4. Are you ever sorry that you are poor?
-> Have you ever wished you were rich/were not poor.

5. It’ a pity that he cannot do this.
-> I wish he could do this.
6. He is sorry that he can’t come here now.
-> He wishes he could come here now.
7. She is sorry that she lives far from the city.
-> She wishes she didn t live far from the city./ lived near the city.’
8. It’s pity that my father has to work on the weekend.
-> If only my father didn t have to work on the weekend.’
9. We are sorry that we won’t be able to help you.
-> We wish we would be able to help you.
10. They are sorry that they don’t correspond very often.
-> They wish they corresponded very often.
Exercise 2: Rewrite these sentences using I wish + S + past simple.
* T writes the exercise in the board, Ss write down into their notebook, then they do
themselves. After that Ss and T correct.
1. I’d love to live near the beach.
Answer key :-> I wish I lived near the beach.
2. I hate having to do homework every night.
-> I wish I didn t’ have to do homework every night.
3. Why don’t we go to the countryside more often?
->I wish we went to the countryside more often.
4. I hate having to do the washing up every day.
-> I wish I didn’t have to do the washing up every day.
5. Why is today’s weather so hot?
-> I wish today’s weather weren’t so hot
6. I’d love to speak 3 languages.
-> I wish I spoke 3 languages.
7. Why don’t we have a computer?
-> I wish we had a computer.
8. I’d love to be a good student.

-> I wish I were a good student.
