personal-computeroperatingsystemonearth.Butbewareits
name.
TheXismeanttobeaRomannumeral,pronounced"ten."
Don'tsay"ohesssex."You'llgetfunnylooksinpublic.
Inanycase,MacOSXLeopardisthesixthmajorversionof
Apple'sUnix-basedoperatingsystem.Itisnot,however,the
MacoperatingsystemthatsawApplethroughthe1980sand
1990s,theonethatwasfinallyretiredwhenitwascalledMac
OS9.Appledumpedthatonein2001;inLeopard,evenfewer
tracesofitremain.

WhydidApplethrowouttheoperatingsystemthatmadeit
famoustobeginwith?Well,throughtheyears,asApplepiled
newfeaturesontoasoftwarefoundationoriginallypouredin
1984,theoriginalfoundationwasbeginningtocreak.
Programmersandcustomerscomplainedofthe"spaghetticode"
thattheMacOShadbecome.
AppleCEOSteveJobs,ofcourse,believesinswift,decisive
actionandlettingthechipsfallwheretheymay.Inhisview,
startingfromscratch—andjettisoningthesystemsoftwarethe

newBraillefont,aRussianspellingchecker,andaWordofthe
Dayscreensaver.
Applealsotooksomethingsaway,rejiggeredothers,and
generallyfine-tunedthewholeaffair.Forexample:

thatfillsaneedweneverknewwehad;itfillsaneedwe
knowwehave.ItkeepsyourentireMacbackedup,24
hoursaday.Everything:files,folders,settings,photos,
