PREAMBLE
1. The urgency of the thesis topic
President Ho Chi Minh taught: "For benefits in ten years' time, plant trees;
for benefits in 100 years, cultivate people”
The career of "cultivating people" in students is a regular but extremely
important job to build a future intellectual team developing comprehensively, to
complete heavy but extremely glorious tasks that the country places on their
shoulders.

The

comprehensive

development

of

students

is

actually


a

comprehensive development of individuals with rich personalities. It sets the need
to research and urge all efforts to exploit and promote the factors that positively
affect the formation and development of student personality (including social
ethics). Therefore, understanding the role of social ehics in the formation and
development of student personality is an issue that attracts attention, both in
theoretical and practical aspects, not only of researchers, but also leaders,
managers, organizations and education-training agencies.
Social ethics is an essential part of the spiritual life of the society, which
is the way to adjust the moral behavior of each individual in the community in
accordance with the requirements of that community. The development of social
ehics is a manifestation of human level and progress in the spiritual culture of the
nation and mankind. The trend of cultural development of modern society is
increasingly asserted, of which social ethics is an important factor and an
indispensable aspect in the formation and development of the comprehensive
personality of each individual. For students, in the process of learning, working
and practical activities it requires understanding the values, social ethics standards,
from external requirements into the indispensable need for a personality. Students
should acquire and transform it into sustainable attributes, qualities, and values,
turning moral knowledge into moral practice.
Hanoi is the economic, political and cultural center of the country, a place
where frequent diplomatic, foreign political, economic, political and cultural
exchanges take place, these are the covenient conditions, good opportunities for
students to absorb information and exchange culture. Hanoi students are a part of

Vietnamese students. They are active, creative, sensitive about the political and
economic situation, adaptable to life, able to adapt quickly, enthusiastic in
studying, aspiring to strive, having a will of self - reliance in learning and life.
In the values and spiritual standards of Vietnamese tradition, values and ethical
standards are the core. Traditional values and ethical standards such as patriotism,
national pride, community consciousness, kindness, dynamism and creativity,
overcoming difficulties in labor, living in love ... have created the identity and
cultural and spiritual life of our people. It also creates its own personality and
noble qualities in the personality of Vietnamese people in general and Vietnamese
students in particular. It is these values and norms that create the strength for the
people of Vietnam in history to be exploited and promoted in the current
innovation career.
Today, the formation and development of Vietnamese students'
personalities are influenced by many factors: the socialist orientation of the
socialist economy, the democratic social life, and international integration have
created conditions for students to be dynamic, flexible, creative and more rational
in learning, research and labor. On the other hand, it is giving rise to moral erosion
phenomena, stimulating pragmatic lifestyles, only attaching importance to material
values

and

disregarding

spiritual

values,

promoting


individualism.

The phenomenon of moral degradation, personality deformation and with it the
social evils are one of the risks to the process of innovation and the development of
people, with all of people, for people and by people, including students. Therefore,
the issue of ethics, the role of social ethics in the formation and development of
student personality is a philosophical problem arising from the reality of our
country today, requires further research, scientific generalizing, finding appropriate
solutions to improve the role of social ehics in the formation and development of
Vietnamese student personality today.
All of the above is the reason that we choose the topic "The role of social
ethics in the formation and development of student personality in Hanoi at
present".
2. Research objectives and tasks

2.1. Research objectives
Based on analyzing and clarifying theoretical and practical issues of the role
of social ethics in forming and developing the personality of Hanoi students over
the past time, the thesis proposes opinions and some main solutions to improve the
role of social ethics in the formation and development of student personality in
Hanoi at present.
2.2. Research tasks
- Presenting an overview of the research situation related to the topic;
- Clarifying theoretical issues about social ethics, social ethical role and
enhancing the role of social ethics in the formation and development of student
personality;
- Clarifying student personality characteristics in Hanoi at present and the

status of the role of social ethics in the formation and development of student
personality in Hanoi at present and the causes;
- Proposing opinions and some key solutions to improve the role of social
ethics for the formation and development of student personality in Hanoi at
present.
3. Object and scope of the research
3.1. Research object
The object of the thesis is the role of social ethics in forming and
developing student personality in Hanoi at present.
3.2. Research scope
- Students studying in Hanoi are very diverse (Vietnamese students and
foreign students), thus in the thesis, we only mention Vietnamese students studying
in Hanoi.
- Survey data mainly focuses on the period from 1986 up to now.
4. Theoretical basis and research method of the thesis
4.1. Theoretical basis

The thesis is made on the basic viewpoints of Marxism-Leninism, Ho Chi
Minh's thought, views and lines of the Communist Party of Vietnam on ethics,
people and personality. The thesis also inherits the achievements of the research
works by domestic and foreign authors as related to the topic.
4.2. Research method
The thesis is based on the application of dialectical materialism and
historical materialism. Combining methods of analysis and synthesis, history logic, systematic methods, comparison etc. to clarify the content that the thesis
mentioned.
5. New contributions in the scientific aspect of the thesis
- The thesis contributes to clarifying the concept of social ethics, social

ethics standards, role and enhancing the role of social ethics in the formation and
development of student personality at present..
- From the reality of the role of social ethics and its causes, the thesis
proposes view-points and some key solutions to improve the role of social ethics in
the formation and development of student personality in Hanoi at present.
6. The theoretical and practical significance of the thesis
- Contributing to the development of scientific arguments for clarifying the
role and enhancing the role of social ethics for the formation and development of
Vietnamese students' personality in general and students in Hanoi in particular.
- Research results of the thesis can be used as references in research,
teaching, education, ethical training and comprehensively developing students
with rich personality generally in Vietnam , particularly in Hanoi .
7. Structure of the thesis
In addition to the introduction, conclusion, list of references and indexes,
contents of the thesis include 4 chapters and 11 sections.
Chapter 1
OVERVIEW OF RESEARCH SITUATION RELATED TO THE
THESIS

1.1. Researches related to ethics, personality and student personality,
ethics role with the formation and development of student personality
1.1.1. Researches related to ethics, social ethics, personality, student
personality, and the rule of formation and development of student personality
The researches related to ethics and social ethics are shown in the typical
works such as: V.A. Sukhomlynsky (1981) in the work “How to educate people in
the true way”; G.Bzelzeladze (1985) in the book "ethics" volume 1 and episode 2;
the article "The relationship between personal interests and social ethics in the

current market economy of Vietnam by Pham Van Duc (2006); "Marxist-Leninist
Ethics Curriculum" by Nguyen Ngoc Long, Nguyen The Kiet (2004) (co-editor)...
The works above have clarified the issues of origin, the nature of ethics, the role of
ethics in social life, ethical standards and its role in present conditions. They are
valuable documents for PhD students to refer and inherit in the process of
implementing the thesis. The research works related to the personality, student
personality, the rule of forming student personality are shown in typical projects
such as: L.M Arkhanheski (1983) in the book "Socialism and personality"; Pham
Minh Hac and Le Duc Phuc (co-editor) (2004) in the work "Some issues of
personality research"; The above works have clarified the problems of the nature,
structure of personality, the rule of personality formation and development. These
valuable materials helped PhD students very much in process of implementing the
thesis.
1.1.2. Researches related to the role of ethics and social ethics in the
formation and development of the personality of Vietnamese people in general
and Vietnamese students in particular
Typical scientific works such as the philosophy doctoral thesis "The role of
ethics in the formation of the Vietnamese personality in the present innovation
conditions" by Le Thi Thuy (2001); The State-level project "The role of the school
in the formation and development of Vietnamese people's personality by way of
education and training" by Hoang Duc Nhuan (1996); The topic "Current student

personality" by Hoang Anh (2008); The article "The role of new ethical education
in building personality at present" by Nguyen The Kiet (2015) ... These works
have mentioned the role of ethical education in building up Vietnamese student
personality. Through referring to the ethical role and the role of ethical education
in building student personality, it also shows a certain degree of the role of social

ethics. However, further research is required for clarifying the role of social ethics
and social ethical standards in the formation and development of Vietnamese
students' personality in general and in Hanoi in particular need to continue to study
deeply. .
1.2. The research works related to the personality of Vietnamese
students in the country and in Hanoi, the reality of the role of ethics and social
ethics in the formation and development of Vietnamese students' personality
in general and Hanoi students in particular
Typical researches must include the following: The book "Social ethics in
our country at present - problems and solutions" by Nguyen Duy Quy (eds.)
(2006); The book "Ho Chi Minh Humanism with building Vietnamese student
personality" by Luong Gia Ban and Hoang Trang (co-editor) (2014); Article
"Current student attitudes towards some traditional values of the Vietnamese
nation" (Surveyed at a number of universities in Hanoi) by Vu Thi Thanh (2008);
Thesis "Traditional ethical education with the formation and development of
Vietnamese student personality at present (through the reality of Hanoi universities
and colleges" by Phung Thu Hien ... The above scientific works have clarified the
reality of the role of ethics and social ethics in the formation and development of
Vietnam 's personality in general and in Hanoi students in particular. Thence PhD
students could compare and inherit, when implementing their thesis. However, the
researches have not yet got deep into the reality of the role of social ethics, the role
of social ethical standards in the formation and development of student personality
more systematically, this is what the thesis continues to study and solve.
1.3. The research works related to viewpoints and solutions for

enhancing the role of ethics and social ethics in the formation and
development of student personality in general and Hanoi students in

particular.
In scientific works such as: The topic "Socialist-oriented education of
student personality in market economy conditions" by Nguyen Ham Gia (1995);
The book "System of ethical categories and ethical education for students" by Tran
Hau Khiem and Doan Duc Hieu (2004); The topic "Developing party members in
Hanoi's universities and colleges - Current situation and solutions" of the Party
Committee of colleges and universities in Hanoi (2015) ... The above works clearly
analyzed the status of student ethics and student personality, the role of ethical
education with the formation and development of student personality, thereby
giving basic solutions to improve effectiveness of ethical education to develop
student personality at present. These are valuable documents for PhD students to
inherit in the process of writing their theses.
1.4. General assessment of research results of the published scientific
works related to the topic and issues that the thesis should continue to focus
on solving
1.4.1. General assessment of research results of the published scientific
works related to the topic
Firstly, the works have clarified ethics, social ethics, social ethics versus
personal ethics, personality, personality of students, the rule of formation and
development of student personality and, initially in different aspects, the works
mentioned the role of ethics and social ethics in the formation and development of
student personality. However, the authors have just addressed those issues in
general but have not deeply analyzed the role of social ethics and social ethical
standards in the formation and development of student personality in Hanoi
systematically from the perspective of philosophy.
Secondly, the works have initially analyzed the current status of social
ethics in Vietnam, the reality of the role of ethics and social ethics in the formation

and development of Vietnamese students' personality in general, Hanoi students in
particular with its causes. However, the reality of the role of social ethics and
social ethical standards in the formation and development of student personality in
Hanoi at present needs to be researched more deeply and more systematically.
Thirdly, the works have also given directions and solutions to improve the
ethics role in the formation and development of student personality in our country
at present. However, the role of ethics and social ethical standards in the formation
and development of the personality of Hanoi's students now needs to be further
researched.
1.4.2. The issues that the thesis need to focus on solving
First, the thesis continues to clarify some concepts directly related to the
thesis topic such as social ethics and social ethics standards; the role of social
ethics, student personality and the rule of formation and development of student
personality. Here, the thesis should continue to clarify the role of social ethics and
enhancing the role of social ethics in the formation and development of student
personality at present, clarifying this issue from perspective of dialectical
materialism

and

historical

materialism

will

contribute

to


providing

a

methodological basis for the implementation of the topic.
Secondly, the thesis initially analyzes the economic, political, cultural and
social characteristics of Hanoi city affecting the role of social ethics in the
formation and development of student personality in Hanoi at present, the actual
situation of student personality in Hanoi and especially the status of the role of
social ethics in the formation and development of student personality in Hanoi at
present (positive and limited impacts ) to indicate their cause.
Thirdly, on the basis of analyzing the current status of the role of social
ethics in the formation and development of student personality in Hanoi together
with pointing out their causes, the thesis gives opinions and some main solutions
to improve the role of social ethics in the formation and development of student
personality in Hanoi at present.

Chapter 2
THE ROLE OF SOCIAL ETHICS IN THE FORMATION AND
DEVELOPMENT OF STUDENT PERSONALITY - SOME THEORETICAL
ISSUES
2.1. Social ethics and student personality, the process of formation and
development of student personality
2.1.1. Social ethics, social ethics standards
2.1.1.1. The concept of ethics, social ethics
On the basis of presenting some ethical definitions of scientists, the author

has given the following ethical understanding: ethics as a form of social
consciousness, is a set of principles , rules, social norms, to regulate and evaluate
human behavior in relation to each other and society, which are practiced on
personal beliefs, tradition and public opinion.
Social ethics is a reflection of social existence in a certain community such
as a country, a nation..., is a way of adjusting the ethical behavior of each
individual in the community to suit the requirements of that community to
constantly develop and perfect that social existence.
2.1.1.2. The concept of social ethics standards
After distinguishing social ethical standards and ethical values, the PhD
student gives his opinion on social ethics standards that include ethical values
popularly accepted, selected and applied broadly in life, acting as models, norms
for the consideration and evaluation and adjustment of human behavior in society.
It is also a form of "spiritual measure" of cultural and social life.
2.1.2. Student personality, the process of formation and development of
student personality
2.1.2.1. Students, student characteristics
In this thesis, the concept of students is limited by the author to include
those who are studying in colleges and universities. Their age ranges from 18 to 25

years old. At this age, people have certain maturing steps both biologically and
socially.
Vietnamese students have the following common characteristics:
First, students are special social forces, are the future intellectual reserve
forces; Secondly, students are those who do not have a stable career, and do not
have a separate position in the process of social production; Third, compared to
the youth force in society, students are the forces with outstanding points, superior

in terms of knowledge, educational level and professional capacity. However, a
part of students, especially in the early stages lacking experience in social life, are
easy to recognize and evaluate shallowly phenomena in social life, especially the
past history, so they are also more likely to have extreme attitudes towards the
phenomena that arise in the society in which they live.
2.1.2.2. Student personality, the rule of formation and development of
student personality
PhD student gives a definition of student personality. That is: Student
personality is the overall ethical qualities, physical and mental abilities that are
formed historically - specifically, regulating the values and social behaviors of
students, being presented, performed in learning activities, communication,
conduct and social activities of each individual student.
The rule of forming and developing personality .
The development of the Vietnamese students' personality is a dialectical
process of conflict emergence and resolution, the process of turning external
requirements into students' internal requirements.
Thence, PhD student has demonstrated the formation and development of
student personality over their four years of study.

2.2. In essence, the role of social ethics in the formation and
development of student personality and the economic, political, cultural and
social characteristics of Hanoi affect this role now
2.2.1. The concept of social ethics role, concept of enhancing social ethics
role in the formation and development of student personality
2.2.1.1. The concept of social ethics role in the formation and development
of student personality
For students, the role of social ethics in the formation and development of

student personality is to encourage, orient, educate and adjust consciousness and
behavior in the process of formation and development of their personality, as a
spiritual motivation, with great power, motivating students to voluntarily study and
practice according to social ethics standards to become a modern student of
comprehensive development and rich personality.
2.2.1.2. The concept of enhancing the role of social ethics in the formation
and development of student personality
Improving the role of social ethics in the formation and development of
student personality is the process of purposeful, active, proactive and creative
activities of subjects on the basis of awareness of objective laws, of social ethics
standards to influence the transformation of the elements and components
constituting student personality to develop and meet the requirements of building
modern students who comprehensively develop with rich personality.
From here, the PhD student points out the purpose, subject, object and
method of enhancing the role of social ethics in the process of forming and
developing student personality..
2.2.2. In essence, the role of social ethics in the formation and
development of student personality
2.2.2.1. Social ethics contributes to the construction of basic content, and is
the purpose for the formation and development of student personality

Firstly, social ethics contributes to the formation and development of
scientific world-view and critical life-view in student personality; Secondly, social
ethics contributes positively in the process of building personal ethical qualities
and forming, developing qualities of will, discipline, and behavior in student
personality; Thirdly, social ethics contributes to the formation and development of
capacity in each student personality at present.

2.2.2.2. Social ethics is one of the basic frameworks (standards) to create a
school culture environment and the motivation of students in the formation and
development of their personality
2.2.3. . Economic - political - cultural - social characteristics of Hanoi
affect the role of social ethics in the formation and development of student
personality in Hanoi at present
Based on analyzing economic, political, cultural and social characteristics in
Hanoi as well as the characteristics of traditional Hanoi people, the PhD student
has pointed out the influence of these fields on the role of social ethics in the
formation and development of student personality in Hanoi at present.
Summary of chapter 2
As a form of social awareness, ethics reflects a separate field in human
social existence. Likewise, the term "personality" also came very early. However,
depending on the different approach, different theoretical and research methods,
the personality is understood differently. The formation and development of
personality is influenced by many different factors. Student personality is a specific
case of personality, which is a form of manifestation of humaneness in a special
social stratum. Therefore, in the university and environment, student personality is
gradually formed, developed and perfected.
Virtue and Talent are two basic elements of personality, in which Virtue is
regarded as a special element, a characteristic and a basic attribute of personality.
In the process of formation and development of personality in Vietnamese students
in general and students in Hanoi in particular, social ethics plays an important role.

At the ages of 18-25, the personality of the students is gradually being improved.
The effects of social ethics (in particular, social ethics standards) have significantly
influenced the process of formation and development of student personality. This is

expressed in detail as follows: social ethics contributes to the construction of basic
content, and is the purpose for the formation and development of student
personality. Social ethics is one of the basic frameworks (standards) to create a
school culture environment and the motivation of students in the formation and
development of their personality. Of course, the role of social ethics is always

refracted by the characteristics of the geographical areas in which they live
and study, in Hanoi specifically.
Therefore, analyzing the role of social ethics in the formation and
development of student personality is an essential task. On the basis of the theory
presented, the thesis will analyze the situation and its causes in implementing the
role of social ethics for the process of formation and development of Vietnamese
students' personality in general and students in Hanoi in particular.
Chapter 3
THE ROLE OF THE SOCIAL ETHICS IN THE FORMATION AND
DEVELOPMENT OF STUDENT PERSONALITY IN HANOI AT PRESENT
- ITS CURRENT SITUATION AND CAUSES
3.1.Current personality characteristics of Hanoi students
3.2.1. The world-view and life-view of Hanoi students at present
In order to determine the current personality characteristics of Hanoi
students, it is necessary to appreciate their world-view and their outlook which is
expressed through the ideals, beliefs and knowledge they are equipped with.
Firstly, the ideal characteristics and beliefs of Hanoi students at present.
Most Vietnamese students in general and students in Hanoi in particular have the
right ideal thought. That thought is expressed in faith in the Party, in the struggle of
students to be included in the Party's ranks. They always believe that striving for
the Party is to have the conditions and the environment to strive and practice. It is

an honor and a pride to contribute a part of strength to the cause of national
construction and defense. In addition to the majority of the ideally enlightened
Hanoi students having the right concept of living, there is still a part of students
with low political consciousness, indifferent attitude towards the situation of the
country, faint about Ideal belief. Others have a pragmatic attitude of life,
selfishness, and a part is involved in social evils.
Secondly, the knowledge of Hanoi students at present. Scientific knowledge is
the basic factor that forms the scientific world-view. Most students in Hanoi have
received and applied the knowledge learned to solve problems in life. Besides
equipping knowledge in general, equipping the theoretical knowledge of MarxismLeninism and Ho Chi Minh's thought in particular is very important in the process of
forming and developing student personality. Because knowledge itself is the mode, the
means and premise for the existence of the world-view, the ideal beliefs of students.
3.2.2. Personal ethical qualities and willpower, discipline, behavior in the
personality of students in Hanoi at present
The quality of personal ethics is the character traits that bear the
psychological meaning of an individual, which is a component of personality,
including honesty, principle, humility and courage ... So, for each individual
student, ethics is the "root" that creates the personality pattern in them. To assess
the personality of students, we often judge from a ethical perspective.
Along with the qualities of personal ethics, in the personality of students, the
qualities of will, discipline and critique in learning of Hanoi students are expressed as
follows: First, most students In Hanoi, have a motivation for learning, scientific
research, active initiative in activities and concern of learning results; Secondly,
Hanoi students now show their awareness of their responsibility through the
motivation to choose a career, active learning motivation, a sense of hard work, selfdiscipline, compliance with discipline, school rules and state laws; Thirdly, Hanoi
students demonstrate their learning discipline in class learning and self-learning,
ensuring consistency between education and self-education, and solidarity to help

each other in learning and scientific research. Fourthly, Hanoi students initially have
the spirit of criticism, debate in study and scientific research, and boldly struggle
with violations of discipline in the school as well as the state law..
3.2.3. Capacity development in student personality in Hanoi at present
Human life is a process of constantly conquering the objective world,
adapting to external circumstances by improving circumstances according to their
needs. In personality of each student, capability is expressed mainly in the capacity
to act in cognitive and practical activities.
The development of the practical acting capacity is affirmed by the
expression of social activeness of each Hanoi student subject with personality.
Social activeness properties include social activeness in mental and practical
activity. Social activeness is expressed in the following points: Firstly, the social
activeness of Hanoi students is now expressed in recognizing their position and
role. Secondly, the social activeness of Hanoi students is reflected in their attitudes
and responsibilities with the renovation process, with the socio-economic situation
of the country and the Capital. Thirdly, social activeness of Hanoi students is
assessed on social activities.
3.2. The reality of the role of social ethics in the formation and
development of student personality in Hanoi at present and its causes

3.2.1.1. The actuality social ethics contributes to the construction of basic
content, and is the purpose for the formation and development of student
personality
Firstly, The actuality of the role of social ethics in the formation and
development of the world-view and life-view in the student personality in Hanoi at
present. Secondly, current status of social ethics role in the formation of personal
ethical qualities, willpower, discipline in student personality in Hanoi at present.

Thirdly, actual status of social ethics role contributes to forming and developing
capacity in each student personality in Hanoi at present
3.2.1.2. The reality of social ehics role contributes to creating a school
culture environment and the motivation of students in the formation and
development of their personality
Firstly, the reality of social ehics role contributes to creating a school
culture environment in Hanoi today . Secondly, the reality of social ethics role is
the motivation of students in the formation and development of student personality
in Hanoi now.
3.2.2. Causes of the actual situation of the role social ethics

in the

formation and development of student personality in Hanoi at present
3.3.2.1. Causes of positive effects
Firstly, the initiative of the subjects in awareness and organization of
enhancing the role of social ethics to build new personality for Hanoi students;
Secondly, the self-learning and ethics training in the process of forming and
developing the personality of the students themselves; Thirdly, due to impacts of
the market economy and international integration on its positive side, it facilitates
the reception of new information and arouses all human resources.
3.3.2.2. The cause of the limitations
Firstly, on the part of the subjects in awareness and organization to improve
the role of social ethics to build student personality: Firstly, despite many
achievements, but in awareness and management of education and training there
remain weaknesses as well as inadequacies and shortcomings; Secondly, some

schools only promote occupational knowledge, disregard the role of social ethics,
underestimate ethical education for students; Thirdly, a part of families is not really
interested in ethical education for students.
Secondly, many violations of the law have not been discovered, or when

training, and building up the personality of students in Hanoi.

4.1.1. Building social ethics standards at present in accordance with new

4.2.1. Enhancing the responsibility of the subjects in awareness and

Marxist-Leninist philosophy affirms that people are born, but personality is
formed. Personality is formed and developed through the process of human
awareness, communication and practical activities.
Therefore, in order to have generations of students with good personality,
comprehensive development of both virtue and talent, good at both "politics" and
"profession" are the result of impacts from many factors, including the role of
social ethics.
As a national political and administrative center, a center of national

always a place to attract all students from the different countryside. They always

and sense of responsibility. It can be said that in recent years, in the universities
and colleges in Hanoi, the role of social ethics has contributed to creating many

ethical degradation, a series of unethical phenomena, the opposition to social
ethical standards has negatively affected the formation of and development of
