Thành lập ngày 01-4-1963 trên cơ sở tách ra từ Cục Quản lý Ngoại hối của Ngân hàng Trung ương.
Là ngân hàng chuyên doanh đầu tiên và duy nhất của Việt Nam tại thời điểm đó hoạt động trong lĩnh
vực kinh tế đối ngoại.

Ngày 02/6/2008, Ngân hàng Ngoại thương Việt Nam đã chính thức chuyển đổi thành Ngân hàng
TMCP Ngoại thương Việt Nam (Vietcombank)

Vốn điều lệ của Ngân hàng là 15 nghìn tỷ đồng Việt Nam.

Trụ sở chính: Số 198 Trần Quang Khải, Hoàn kiếm, Hà Nội
MẠNG LƯỚI HOẠT ĐỘNG
Gần 300 chi nhánh và Phòng giao dịch trên toàn quốc.
Hơn 1.300 máy ATM và gần 10.000 điểm chấp nhận thanh toán thẻ (POS) khắp cả nước.
Ngân hàng có tỷ suất lợi nhuận cao nhất tại Việt Nam (ROE bình quân hằng năm gần bằng 20%).
Thiết lập quan hệ đại lý với hơn 1.300 ngân hàng tại 85 quốc gia khắp các châu lục.
