1. Introduction
1.1. Reason for choosing topic.

Our country is in the integration time, the Party and the State especially
pay special attention to the development of education and training. In the
development of this project, the establishment and development of primary
education is of great importance in contributing to the firm of development of
the education system in order to integrate Vietnamese education to others in the
region and the world.
Elementary school is the foundation of the national education system. Its
aim is to educate students to form the basis for the long-term moral and
intellectual development, physical, aesthetic and basic skills so that students
continue to study to junior high school. The development of primary education
also help to contribute to the solid development of education and training.
In order to focus on the successful implementation of primary education
goals, to educate children in the initial development and development of
personality, English in the school is an indispensable subject for teaching and
learning. English is the international language, so using English well is seemed
to be the golden key for people to integrate better. With this trend, teaching and
learning English at the elementary level becomes more important and urgent
than ever, especially in the training of excellent students.
Today, teaching and learning foreign languages is becoming an urgent
need for the whole society. With the trend of integration and development of
each Vietnamese people, students are gradually equipping themselves with a
certain foreign language to exchange learning and reach out to the world.
English is extremely important in the overall development of the students.
For many years I have been assigned the task of fostering excellent students.
Therefore, it is necessary to identify the positions, roles and responsibilities of
the good students.
Based on the fact that over the years, I have researched and applied many
measures to refine and sharpen students in order to improve the quality of
teaching and learning English well and have had the turning points successfully.
I boldly share the experience: "Some effective measures to help 4th and 5th

grades students at Thach Quang primary school for gaining good knowledge
to achieve success in taking part in English Club" in order to improve the
efficiency of the room good English in the school and throughout the district,
meeting the standard primary school, suitable for education in the new period.
1.2. purposes
My theme is to share with my peers, who are at the top of their class,
standing up for their own experiences which have been selected and applied in
practice in the school years and have remarkable results. In addition, I would
like to receive the enthusiastic contribution of colleagues to the re-training,
fostering my good students achieved more success.

1.3. Subjects
The students of grades 4 and 5 of Thach Quang primary school where I
am working. These students have the potential, good character, good language
skills that I discovered the fostering and took part in English language
competitions at school, cluster and district level in the school year 2017 -2018.
1.4. Methods
- Student-centered approach to the lesson
- The method of organizing regular, regular exchanges, organized into
communication skills in pairs and groups.
- Methods of research to build theoretical basis- Method of investigation
survey the pros and cons of each pupil in elementary school.
- Methods of collecting information, materials from textbooks, tapes,
discs, learning English online, exchanging with colleagues, with native teachers.
- Statistical methods, data processing, markers, levels achieved by
students in cross-examination among student’s groups to select the best students
to foster effectively.
2. Content

2.1. Rationale
On the spiritual guidance of the Ministry of Education & Training on
teaching and learning English in levels of education, I found that most students
master the grammar quickly but the ability to communicate is limited. So joining
the English Club is giving students an opportunity to socialize in a healthy and
safe playground.
Based on the Official Letter No. 2041 / SGD & ĐT-GDTH dated first
September 2017 of the Director of Thanh Hoa Department of Education and
Training guiding the implementation of the school year 2017-2018 tasks;
Department of Education and Training instructs elementary schools in the
district to organize Cluster Exchange Activities for off-hours education in 20172018. The goal of improving the quality of comprehensive education in primary
schools; and motivating students to go to school.
Through the exchange students help to train life skills such as
communication skill, cooperative skill, situations management skills.
English is taught in school later than other subjects but is supported
enthusiastically by both students and their parents. Due to the new methods in
teaching forein language now is to motivate students learning independently,
actively and positively in solving the tasks of communication and co-curricular
activities in the English Club.
2.2 . Status of issues
The fact show that students learn English well but lack of environment to
communicate and practice may lead them just learning passively through books.
3

Moreover, if the knowledge they learn without digging deep and creation, it will
have certain limitation. Therefore, that Thach Thanh Education Department have
organised English Club was to give a chance for students to exchange knowledge
and to advance the quality of learning and teaching English in all schools in the
district.

*Advantages:With the condition of the center of the six communes in the
West, Thach Quang primary school has succeded in teaching and learning
movement. So, when I proposed to establish the team to join in English club, I
was supported by both the headmaster and students’s parents who always
motivate and encourage their children to learn English. Besides, the teachers of
other subjects are aggressive, enthusiastic and dedicated to the profession.
Moreover, students themselves are so eager and love English that make the
study session become effective.
*Disadvantages:Thach Quang Primary school is located in a remote and
mountainous area which is very far from the center of the district. Besides, lack
of facilities served for learning such as projectors, multi-purpose room also
prevents both English teacher and students from practising English more often.
What is more, most students are from ethnic groups (for example, Muong ethnic
group) and many of them still speak Kinh language unclearly, which is uneasy
for them to communicate with others as well as with native speakers. Finally, the
low income of students’parents also stops them from buying tapes, reference
books for their children to improve knowledge. For the reasons above, the result
of study among students is not in the same level. So, how to train for attaining
good results is an unsolvable problem.
In addition, the superficial awareness of some teachers in the school and
students in English subjects sometimes lead to English teaching and learning
activities uneffective.
2.3. Measures
From the above situation, in order to improve English students in the next
school year, I would like to present some basic solutions that have been applied
and got results.
Measure 1: Good communication, awareness raising for managers,
teachers, parents, students about the importance of English in the school.
In any areas, for successful implementation, the awareness of the role and
position of the task is the first and the key step. The right understanding help to

understand the importance of the task from which we focus on intellectual and
strength on the task assigned known as a "guideline" for all work.
The target audiences for this is managers, teachers, staffs, parents and
students. The content should raise awareness about the role, position, mission
and importance of English in the school, to improve the quality of
comprehensive education for students. Explain that innovation in teaching
methods: textbooks, materials, teaching aids are essential elements that can not
4

be overlooked. The close attention of the Department of Education and Training,
the school, the parents and all the teachers in the school contribute to teaching
and learning English better.
Measure 2: Choosing the best students in grade 4, grade 5 to join the
school's English club.
Through the process of studying in grade 4 and 5, I realize that some
students absorb fast, hard work, good skills, positive attitude, careful,
persevering, high self-esteem in learning and passion for the subject. If the
student has these characteristics I will select and train systematically at the
beginning of the school year.
Measure 3: Give students in grade 4, grade 5 take different test
For the purpose of quality survey to accurately screen the team, choose
the right object to create fairness for students, they will promote their ability to
learn foreign languages.

Looking at the results of both grade 4 and grade 5, I officially selected 15
students to join the English Club.
Measure 4: High consensus of the administration, expertise and
endorsement of parents. I planed to practise on Wednesday afternoon,
Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon. There is also an additional
Thursday evening.
Measure 5: I decided to give the students the best English grade 4,
grade 5 to learn a class.
I think separating two subjects into two classes to practise would be very
hard. Also, it took a lot of time for both students and teachers to decide for the
children in the two classes study together for a while to help grade 5 revise
knowledge of grade 4 and grade 4 students acquire the new knowledge of grade
5. Complement their lack of knowledge help them become more confident
without teacher or the tutors they are still active in their knowledge themselves.

Photos of students are learning a class
Measure 6: Widening knowledge from the textbook.

* I would like to present an illustrated lecture part from the English
textbook 4
Unit 2: I’m from Japan ( Lesson 2: Part 2: Point and Say – page 14 English
textbook 4, Espisode 1)
For this section is the pattern sentence.
Model sentences:
What nationality are you ?
I’m + quốc tịch
Ex: + What nationality are you ?
I’m Japanese.
11

Based on the above examples, students can practice the same sentence form.
Ex : + What nationality are you ?
I’m Malaysian.
+ What nationality are you ?
I’m Autralian.
Note: In addition to asking “What nationality are you?”, students can
ask this structure in other ways such as “What is your nationality?”. As
excellent students can easily pratise the model sentence, I provide them more
knowledge by expanding another ways of asking. For example, if you want to
know a girl or a woman’s citizenship, you ask “ What’s her nationality?”
→She’s Japanese. Notice that if you see “her” in the question, certainly the
answer starts with “she”. And if you want to ask a boy or a man’s nationality,
you may say: “ What is his nationlity?”-> He is Malaysian . Be careful if “his”
appears in the question, the answer must begin with “He”.
To help students practise the knowledge, I prepared an exercise which is
good for them to remember and do the task exactly.
Exercise: Reoder the words to make sentences

1.

is / nationality / your / what / ?

-> ……………………………………………………………….
2.

his / what’s / nationality / ?

-> ……………………………………………………………….
3. are / nationality / what / you / ?
-> ……………………………………………………………….
4. what / her / is / nationality / ?
->………………………………………………………………..
After my students finish the test, I checked the answer and gave explaination.
1. What is your nationality ?
2. What’s his nationality ?
3. What nationality are you ?
4. What is her nationality ?
I continue to apply that teaching method for 5th grade students.
Unit 11: What’s the matter with you ? ( Lesson 1: Part 2: Point, Ask and
Answer – page 6 – English textbook 5, Espisode 2 )
For this section is the pattern sentence.
Model sentences:
What’s the matter with you ?
I’ve got a headache.
12

Students just practise the model sentence by replacing the word “disease”

by another such as an earache, a sorethroat, a cold, a backache, a toothache,
a stomachache, etc.
Thus, excelllent students find no difficulty to do further exercises by
giving the same sentences based on the model one.
Ex 1: What’s the matter with me ? -> you have got a backache. With
questions ending with “me”, the answer must begin with “you”
Ex 2: What’s the matter with her ? -> She has got toothache. With
questions ending with “her”, the answer certainly begins with “She”
Ex 3: What’s the matter with him ? -> He has got cold. With questions
ending with “him”, the answer of course begins with “He”
Note: When the subjects are “I, You”, go with “have” ;otherwise,“He,
She” followed by “has”.
To check students’s understanding, I also gave the following exercise.
Exercise: Circle the correct answer
1. I ……. got a toothache.
A. is
B. have
C. has
2. She ……. got …… earache.
A. have / a
B. are / a
C. has / an
3. What’s ….. matter with you ?
A. the
B.this
C. that
4. …… has got a backache.
A. they
B. I
C. he

5. You have …… a …….. .
A. got / sore throat
B. a sore throat
C. got / the
After my students finish the test, I checked the answer and gave
explaination. 1 B 2C 3A 4C 5A
* Guiding students for writing short paragraphs based on topics from
textbook.
Before writing, I instructed the students to write simply, using words
easily as long as write the correct words, the correct sentences. Acording to the
requirements of the proposed, if they know the words I can suggest, then each
text in my textbook is a short article, which helps them to use the sentence
patterns learned. Set the habit of writing makes them not be confused in the
form of paragraphs.
Example 1: Write about a friend of you
This is my friend. His name is nguyet. He is ten years old. He is a student
at Thach Quang primary school. He likes music very much. He can sing many
13

Vietnamese and English songs. He goes to English club on Saturday and
Sunday.
Example 2: Write about yourself
Hello, my name is Ha ly. I am in lass 5B. My family has got 4 people: my
father, mother, brother and me. My family is very happy. My hobby is traveling
around the world. I am good at listening and speaking English. I can speak
English fluently with my foreign friends. I hope that I will become a teacher of
English someday.
Example 3: Write about your dream house
My name is Tuan. I want to have a dream house in the city. It will be a

modern and comfortable house. There will be ten rooms in the house: three
bedrooms, two livingrooms, one study, three bathrooms and one kitchen.
I will have a computer in my study. I will also have a hi-fi stereo in my
bedroom. My dream house will be an ideal one.
After students did the tasks, I collected the papers, pointed out the
mistakes carefully and guide them how to write the same essays.
Beside those articles on the students also write many other ones with
different topics. These are topics that I have covered through the process of
revision.

* After stressful lessons, I often let the children sing English songs to help
them develop their listening skills and to create a confident, natural and relaxed
learning environment. They are all nimble intelligent and more effective.
The songs that I usually give the children to sing are : Wake up, What
make you beautiful, Let it go, Hand in hand, Proud of you, Bingo, Clap your
hand, The finger family, Five little mokeys, Baby shark, Head shoulder knee and
toes.
* In order to make the leson more exciting I let students participate in
speaking activities with give free speeches to correct pronunciation, sentence
patterns, intonation, expressions, voice, and auxiliary movements which have
the most fun, nature and confident. Here are some examples that they have been
practicing.

Photos of students practicing speaking
* Three basic signs for elementary school students: present simple, Past
Simple, Present Continuous.
For elementary students to remember the nature of the three tenses is
basically difficult because they always feel vague. When I separated them from
each other they do well but the combination of the three are very embarrassing.

The number of correct sentences is very low, but this section decides high on the
excellent student test. The more students know how important this is, the higher
the ability to decide it in this section. I focus on this part a lot of time. At first, I
split each tense so that each student do individually with examples and tutorials.
Then, I gave the students a paper presenting the present, the past simple and the
present continuous. Before doing this kind of exercise I reminded the students of
the three signs as follows:
17

- Signs of recognition of present simple: Always, usually, often,
sometime, seldom, rarely, hardly, never, everyday, every week, every month,
every year.
- Signs of past simple monogamy. In past adverbs of time: Yesterday,
lastnight, last week, last month, last year, ago, two hours ago, two weeks ago.
- Signs of awareness are ongoing:
+ In adverbs there are adverbs of time: now, at the moment, right
now, at present.
+ In verbs there are verbs like: Look, listen, keep silent.
Ex: Given the correct form of the verb in brackets
1. Mai usually ………. ( study) her lesson in the early everning.
2. We ……… ( not have) our lesson yesterday.
3. Lan and Minh …….. ( take) a bus to school everyday.
4. The students ………. ( play) in the school yard now.
5. Look! It ………. ( rạin) again.
6. They ……. ( buy) that house last year.
The results were unexpected, they did exactly 6 sentences and grasp the
essence of each. Therefore, I multiply exercises for them to practise until they
no longer forget or wonder that I move to another topic.
* I just say through the hearing a bit that my school is a mountainous

school. Where media is not available. So I think the way to teach listeing skill as
follows: most parents have phones with wifi connection or 3G. I ask the students
to listen to the textbook, listening sections in the beginning of the lesson so that
they can listen to the text and explain the answers and give tips on different
types of listening. For example, “listen and write” students are the hardest part.
If they are not able to write in English, they can write the words in Vietnamese
then translate them into English and then write the results in the right place.
* In short, to have good students, the teachers themselves and students
need to work hard and contribute highly that I believe both the teacher and the
students will be successful.
2.4. Result
After studying this method, students have equiped themselves with a
fairly well-financed knowledge, skilled in taking exams, joining the English club
with high efficiency. Below is a table showing the results obtained over the

3. Conclusions, recommendations
3.1. Conclusions
The above are some measures to help students acquire good knowledge to
achieve success in the English Club. This is the result of research comes from
reality through many years of teaching. During the implementation, there are
learning experiences of some of my colleagues in and outside the district.
These are a number of facets of the problems and other measures that i
have not been able to address here.
3.2. Recommendations
To improve the quality of teaching English I have suggested to the
education department such as:
Continue to maintain the English club once a year; additional topics in
English; select and agree on programs and textbooks in English subjects;
Frequent professional cross-sectional change to English teachers have the
opportunity to improve and learn professional qualifications from each other.
Cross-sectional professional activities of downstream and reverse domain.
For my school: facilities and materials are always provided for teaching
and learning English. such as projectors, multipurpose rooms, reference
materials; Frequently exchange ideas and assessments during teaching hours so
that I can learn from experience and teach better.

Due to time constraints, research scope and personal capacity, the
experience initiative may have some inevitably inevitable points. We would like
to receive feedback from our colleagues to improve the research more
effectively.

I sincerely confirm this is the initiative I
have done myself, not coppying from others.
