1. Read the following passage and answer the questions.
Olympic Sports
The first Olympics in ancient Greece lasted one day. There was only one sport-running. The
athletes ran a distance of 192.27 meters. Later, the games included more sports, like boxing and
horse racing. Unlike modern athletes, the athletes in the ancient Olympics didn’t have special sports
clothes. In fact, they didn’t wear any clothes at all.
Like the ancient Olympics, the first modern Olympics in 1896 included running. It had more
modern sports, too. These included swimming, gymnastics, and bicycling. The organizers felt that
sports and exercises made people better human beings. This time, the athletes wore clothes.

The Olympics in ancient Greece didn’t include winter sports. The first winter Olympics took
place in France in 1924. The sports included skiing, skating and hockey.
Women didn’t participate in the ancient Olympics. Women didn’t participate in the first
modern Olympics Games, either, but that soon changed. In the 1900 Olympics, women participated
in several sports.
