In the past year, the adult obesity rate rose in 48 of America’s 52 states. Despite the
campaigns to make people aware of the dangers of over-eating, about 119 million, or 64% of US
adults are either overweight or obese. Worryingly, this figure is predicted to rise to 73% by the


end of this year. What does this mean for America? Already 300,000 deaths each year are caused
by obesity (only smoke kills more people), and the annual cost to the country is around $100 billion.

William Laughead, an advertising executive for the Red River Lumber Company, initiated
a campaign that consisted of a series of publications featuring Paul Bunyan. For several

decades, the company distributed these publications free of charge and made no

other writers to make use of Paul Bunyan because it felt that the use of this character
