Activity 1.1: Identifying Design Steps
The process of designing a business solution is a type of problem solving. You
regularly apply problem-solving skills at work and in everyday life. This
activity provides an opportunity to assess the skills you currently possess as
tools that you can apply in this course.
In this activity, you will list the steps involved in designing a house.
Objectives
After completing this activity, you will be able to:

Before You Begin
This activity includes both small group tasks and class discussion.
Time to complete this activity: 10 minutes followed by a 10 minute
discussion.
Scenario
Your friend has decided to build his dream house and has asked you to
coordinate the project. You have agreed to help him with the design of his
house, up to the construction phase.

Exercise 1: Identifying the Steps Involved in Designing a House
First, in a small group, you will generate a list of the steps you would take to
help your friend design his house.

Identify the steps involved in designing a house (5 minutes)
1. Participate in small groups assigned by the instructor.
2. Identify at least five steps required in the house’s planning phase, before

actual construction can begin.
3. Identify the order in which the steps would occur.

Next, identify a spokesperson who can present the group's ideas in a class
discussion.
