SUMMARY
This study attempted to determine the effects of information technology in teaching English to the
first year students of the University of Agriculture and Forestry, Thai Nguyen City, Viet Nam. An
experimental design was used. The subjects of the study were 60 students of the University of
Agriculture and Forestry. The study which lasted for ten weeks used the two tests (pre-test and
post-test) as the instrumentation to collect the necessary data. The results of the two tests were
computed and analyzed using t-test for correlated means to give the findings. The findings showed
thatthere was no significant difference between the mean score of students in the pre-test using the
traditional method and those using the informationtechnology (IT). The post-test results also
proved that IT method was more effective compared to the traditional method. The t-test proved
that there was a significant difference in the mean gain scores between the control and
experimental groups. Based on the findings of the study, some implications for teaching English
were suggested and recommendations were made for further research.

INTRODUCTION
*
Of all the languages today, English is very
necessary
at
schools,
colleges,
and
universities. English as a global language is
the most widely spoken language. It is the
means of communication between the people
of different nations. English continues to be
the medium of instruction in colleges and
universities, and it is also the language in
administration. Since the first appearance of
information technology in Vietnam in the
early 1990s, it was proven to be effective in
the teaching and learning process [2].
Information technology has been used
differently in education and contributed
greatly to the pedagogical methodology
renovation. Regarding foreign language
training, information technology has been
considered as a potential tool.
Technology-enhanced language laboratories have been
fitted up in many educational campuses to
assist students in studying both receptive and

productive skills. Locally as well as
internationally connected computers allow
learners not only to participate in distant
courses, gather with their mates online but
also to surf the internet for further
information to support their study.
The classroom, which depends heavily on
verbal communication, has always been
equipped with visual materials to aid
instruction. For centuries, visual aids have
been in formalized education. Hence, the idea
of using visual material is a very old one.
These materials create more vivid impressions
when used with additional sense organs.
Weller (2007a) [3] said: “An individual gets
the great proportion of his knowledge through
the eyes, a smaller proportion through his other
senses". Further, media add variety, color and
impact in teaching are also said to be good
attention-getters.

technology is rather complementary, not
competitive.
Useful as it is, the application of information
technology to promote the teaching and
learning of foreign languages in Vietnam in
general and in the University of Agriculture
and Forestry in particular is still limited.
There
are
many
researches
about
effectiveness of the information technology in
teaching but still it cannot be said that is the
best. Hence, the study gave the researcher an
idea and an inspiration to study the
effectiveness of the use of information
technology and combination of them to the
first year students in learning English at the
University of Agriculture and Forestry.
This hypothesis was tested in this study:
There is no significant difference between
the mean score of the students in the
post-test using the traditional method and those
using IT.
SUBJECT AND METHODOLOGY
The subjects of this study were 60 first year
students in Environmental Science Class A
and B at Thai Nguyen University of
Agriculture and Forestry. There were 30
students for each group(control group and
experimental group). They were chosen using
a combination of purposive, and quota
sampling techniques. The control group was
subject to the traditional method using
lectures with handoutswhile the experiment
group was subjected to IT such as OHP
technique, and PowerPoint technique.Fisher
(2003) confirmed that PPT presentations
could be effectively used in many ways in all
stages of a language lesson[1].
A teacher-designed achievement test was
validated and administered as a pre-test and
post-test to both groups. The t-test for
independent
sampleswas
employed
to
compare the pre-test scores of the two groups
as well as the results of the entrance tests.
The t-test of dependent sample means was
also used to compare the pre-test and post-test
mean of each group.
FINDINGS, RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
Comparison of the mean score of the
pre-test of the control group and the
experimental group
Table 1 shows that there is no significant
difference between the mean score of students
in the pre-test using the traditional method
and
those
usingIT.
The
control
and
experimental groups got mean scores of 5.26
and 5.33 respectively. When subjected to
t-test, the result was "no significant difference
between the two groups in the pre-test".
Therefore, the two groups were homogeneous
at the beginning of the study.

Table 2 shows the comparison of the mean
score of students in the pre-test and post-test
of the control group. The difference of the
means in pre-test and post-test using the
traditional method is significant when tested
at α = 0.05. The computed value of t is equal
to 5.767 which is higher than the tabulated
value which is equal to 1.699. Therefore, with
95% level of confidence, it can be implied
that the mean score of students in the post-test
is higher than the pre-test using the traditional
method or there is a significant difference
between mean score of students in the pre-test
and post-test using the traditional approach of
instruction at α = 0.05. This indicates that the
students have gained mastery of the subject
matter when exposed to traditional approach
of instruction. The increased level of
performance of the control group in the
post-test implies that there was an increase in the
amount of learning and retention. As the
concepts of verbs were re-learned in the
classroom, the students somehow recalled and
retained the information and learned much
more than what they had before the start of
the treatment period. Having previous lessons
and accumulated more information, the
students would surely score better in the
post-test.It further implies that the students have
acquired learning under the traditional
method as reflected in the increased scores in
the post-test. It can be inferred that the
students in the control group learned by
mastery through the use of traditional method
of teaching like lecture methods, drills,
repetition, memorization and with the
guidance of a fixed curriculum.
Comparison of the mean score of the
pre-test and post-pre-test of the experimental group
Table 3 shows the comparison of the mean
score of students in the pre-test and post-test
of the experimental group. The difference of
the means in pre-test and post-test using the
information technologyis significant when
tested at α = 0.05. The computed value of t is
equal to 8.527 which is higher than the
tabulated t-value which is equal to 1.7.
Therefore, with 95% level of confidence, it
can be implied that the mean score of students
in the pre-test is lower than the post-test using
the IT or there is a significant difference
between mean scores of students in the
pre-test and post-pre-test using the IT α = 0.05. This
indicates that the students have gained
mastery of the subject matter when exposed
to this modern instruction. The increased
level of performance of the experimental
group in the post-test scores also shows that
there are improvements in the amount of
learning and retention. The concepts of verbs
were not only re-learned, moreover, using the
IT method, the students were able to practice
and rehearse the application of the principles
through the drill activities employed in IT. In
this method, the students relearned the
principles, acquired information and learned
the application of the concepts of verbs, thus,
an increase in the level of language
performance.

Table 4 shows the test of difference of the

the

and
experimental groups. The tabulated results
show that the experimental group had a
higher mean gain score than the control group
when tested at 0.05 level of significance. The
computed t-value which is equal to 3.137
being greater than the tabulated t-value of
1.672 which indicates that the group exposed
to the treatment significantly gained more
than the control group. This is indicative that
the students using the IT have performed
differently from those in the control group.
The latter performed better than those using
the traditional method.
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Conclusions
The mean score of students using IT was
significantly higher than the mean score of
students using the traditional method is
supported.
The students using IT performed better than
those using the traditional method.
There was significant difference in the mean
score of the group using the traditional
method and that of those usingIT in the
inclusive
setting.
Therefore,
that
the
hypothesis stated that there was no significant
difference between the mean score of the two
groups in learning English using the
traditional method and that of those having IT
in the inclusive setting was not supported.
Recommendations
English teachers should assess and evaluate
their present methods of teaching if these are
still effective and integrate IT in their present
style of teaching, take note of their
differences and then assess their students'
performance in their respective subject to
determine if they are performing well, then
they may try to motivate themselves and their
students using modern technology to make
teaching and learning English become more
effective yet fun. They should share with their
colleagues
their
experiences
in
using
innovative ways in teaching English.
Alternatively, researchers should compare the
English performance of students who are
exposed and treated with IT and other modern
ways of teaching with those who received the
traditional method of teaching. A further
intensive and extensive studies should be
made regarding the use of interactive,
multi-media devices in teaching English and other
subjects as well and propose a study on the
same topic.
Further study on students and teachers
perception regarding the extensive use of the
IT and other related technology in the
classroom setting should be conducted since
teachers and students apparently seemed only
the passive recipient of the technology and
considerations on their latent feelings and
emotions were not carefully reckoned with.
