Charles Darwin

After Charles Darwin, man’s view of man was changed for ever.
Although he was not the sole originator of the theory of evolution based on
natural selection, it was he who gave it wide currency and respectability.

The Shrewsbury-born Darwin studied Medicine at Edinburgh University
and then Theology at Cambridge University, but he leapt at the chance to sail
as naturalist abroad HMS Beagle on a world tour that included South America (
1931 – 1936 ). His works on the geological and zoological discoveries of the

voyage established his reputation as a scientist, and he abandoned his earlier
ideas of entering the church.

Amid a mixture of condemnation and acclaim, he published his
epoch-making on the origin of species by means of natural selection (1859) only after
he realized Alfred Russell Wallace was working on a similar principle. This
and his further landmark oeuvres, such as The Descent of Man (1871), placed
him in the front rank of scientists.
