<b> UNIT 13: Zz – Part 1</b>



<b>I. AIMS</b>


<b>1. Knowledge: </b>By the end of the lesson, students can be able to:
Recognize and pronounce the letter Zz and its sound correctly
Understand, recognize and say the three Zz words


Write the letter Zz


<b>2. Skills: </b>Listening-reading-speaking-writing.


<b>3. Attitude</b>: Educate Sts to love their lesson and work hard.
<b>II. TEACHING AIDS</b>


1. Teacher’s: student’s book and teacher’s book, pictures, cassette.
2. Students’: books, notebooks, workbooks.

<b>1.Listen, point and repeat. Colour : </b>


<b>(15’)</b>Introduction of letter Z, its sound and how to
pronounce the words beginning with Zz


- Show the students the zoo phonic card. Point to it
and say: /z/. The students repeat.


- Then say /z /- zoo. The students repeat.
- Mime the sounds of different animals and
say: /z /- zoo. Encourage the students to do the
same.


- Say the letter, the students perform the action and
the word.



- Follow the same procedure: /z/- zebra (mime
galloping), /z/- zip (mime zipping up)


- Write the letter Zz on the board next to the
phonics cards. Point to it and say: “This is the
letter /zed/. The letter /zed/ makes the /z / sound.
The students repeat both sounds.


<b>Activity: Where’s the letter? (5’)</b>

- Teacher prepares photocopies of a page/ pages
from some story books.


- Ask the students to work in pairs/ groups
- Hand out the photocopies and ask students to
search for and circle the letter Zz on the page(s).
- In a limited time, the pair/ group has circled the
most Zz is the winner.


- This game can help the students understand the
link between the letter sounds and words in books.


<b>Pupil’s book open</b>. <b>(10’)</b>


- Point to and elicit the sound of the letter and the


words. /z/- zoo, /z /- zebra, /z /- zip


- Play the CD. The students listen, point and
repeat.


- The students color the letters Zz (explain that
they can use any colors they like).


- Teacher goes around the class and elicits the
letter and the word from individual students.


<b>Activity: Which One Is Missing?</b>


- Put the phonics cards face up on the table/stick
them on the board (may use some cards from the
previous lessons)


- Give the students 10 seconds to look at the cards.
- Have students close their eyes and then you take
away one cards.


- Tell the students to open their eyes and name the
missing cards

- Point to the zoo and say: Look! A zoo! The
students repeat.


- Do the same procedure for zebra and zip
- Play the CD. The students listen and point.
- Say: Look! A zoo! Ask the students to point to
the corresponding item in the picture



- Repeat with the remaining item Look! A zebra!
<i>Look! A zip on the zebra!</i>


- Ask the students to colour the zebra and the zip.
- Go around the classroom ask the students to
name the item they are colouring.


<i>e.g. Teacher: (pointing to the zebra) Look! A …</i>
<i> Student 1: zebra! etc</i>


<b>3. Chant and show! (12’)</b>


- Put up the zoo, zebra and zip phonics cards on
the board


- Point to the phonics cards and say: /z /- zoo, /z /-
<i>zebra, /z/- zip. The students repeat.</i>


- Play the CD. The students listen, follow in their
books and chant.


- Ask the students to take out their own zoo, zebra,
<i>zip picture cards and place them on their desks. </i>
Play the CD again, ask them to listen and hold up
the corresponding picture cards


- Repeat the chant without the CD. Keep the
rhythm by clapping hands. Pause before the words
(zoo, zebra, zip) and encourage the students to
name the items.

<b>Activity: Chant in group (Optional)</b>


- Divide the class into 3 groups (zoo, zebra, zip).
Each group says the appropriate chant while the
rest of the class claps.


- Ask each group to show the corresponding
phonics cards while they chant.


<b>* Production: My sound book (6’)</b>


- Ask the students to take out their notebooks.
- Ask them to draw a big letter Z in their
notebooks.


- Ask them to decorate the letter.


Explain to the students that they will look at the
letter and practice saying the sound at home.
