Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate
the correct answer to each of the following questions from 34 to 38.

Last week I went to visit Atlantic College, an excellent private college in Wales. Unusually, it
gives young people much needed experience of life outside the classroom, as well as the opportunity
to study for exams. The students, who are aged between 16 and 18 and come from all over the world,
spend the morning studying. In the afternoon they go out and do a really useful activity, such as
helping on the farm, looking after people with learning difficulties, or checking for pollution in
rivers.

One of the great things about Atlantic College students is that they come from many different
social backgrounds and countries. As few can afford the fees of £20,000 over two years, grants are
available. A quarter of the students are British, and many of those can only attend because they
receive government help. "I really admire the college for trying to encourage international
understanding among young people” as Barbara Molenkamp, a student from the Netherlands, said.
"You learn to live with people and respect them, even the ones you don't like. During the summer
holidays my mother couldn't believe how much less I argued with my sister".

To sum up, Atlantic College gives its students an excellent education, using methods which really
seem to work.

Question 20: What is the writer trying to do in the text?

time.

education.

like.

B. what kind of programme Atlantic College offers. D. how to get along better with other
people.

Question 22: What is the writer's opinion of Atlantic College?

A. It doesn't allow students enough study time. C. It doesn't give good value for money.
B. Its students are taught to like each other. D. Its way of teaching is successful
Question 23: Since being at Atlantic College, Barbara...

A. has learnt a lot about other countries, C finds it easier to get on with other
people.

B. has become more confident than her sister. D. prefers her new friends to her family.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions

Ocean water plays an indispensable role in supporting life. The great ocean basins hold about
300 million cubic miles of water. From this vast amount, about 80,000 cubic miles of water are
sucked into the atmosphere each year by evaporation and returned by precipitation and drainage to
the ocean. More than 24,000 cubic miles of rain descend annually upon the continents. This vast
amount is required to replenish the lakes and streams, springs and water tables on which all flora
and fauna are dependent. Thus, the hydrosphere permits organic existence.

The hydrosphere has strange characteristics because water has properties unlike those of any
other liquid. One anomaly is that water upon freezing expands by about 9 percent, whereas most
liquids contract on cooling. For this reason, ice floats on water bodies instead of sinking to the
bottom. If the ice sank, the hydrosphere would soon be frozen solidly, except for a thin layer of
surface melt water during the summer season. Thus, all aquatic life would be destroyed and the
interchange of warm and cold currents, which moderates climate, would be notably absent.

Another outstanding charateristic of water is that water has a heat capacity which is the
highest of all liquids and solids except ammonia. This characterisitc enables the oceans to absorb and
store vast quantities of heat, thereby often preventing climatic extremes. In addition, water dissolves
more substances than any other liquid. It is this characteristic which helps make oceans a great
storehouse for minerals which have been washed down from the continents. In several areas of the
world these minerals are being commercially exploited. Solar evaporation of salt is widely practised,
potash is extracted from the Dead Sea, and magnesium is produced from sea water along the
American Gulf Coast.
