FOOTPRINTS ON THE MOON

Long ago a lot of people thought the moon was a god. Other people thought it was just a light in the sky.
And others thought it was a big ball of cheese!

The telescopes were made. And men saw that the moon was really another world. They wondered what it
was like. They dreamed of going there.

On July 20,1969, that dream came true. Two American men landed on the moon. Their names were Neil
Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin. The first thing the men found was that the moon is covered with dust. The dust is so
thick that the men left footprints where they walked. Those were the first marks a living thing had ever made on the
moon. And they could stay there for years and years. There is no wind or rain to wipe them off.

that may last forever.

The Singapore Science Centre is located on a six-hectare site in Jurong. At the centre, we can
discover the wonders of science and technology in a fun way. Clap your hands and colorful bulbs will
light up. Start a wheel spinning and it will set off a fan churning. It is a place to answer our curiosity and
capture our imagination.

The centre features over four hundred exhibits covering topics like solar radiation,
communication, electronics, mathematics, nuclear energy and evolution. It aims to arouse interest in
science and technology among us and the general public. The centre is the first science one to be
established in South East Asia. It was opened in 1977 and it now receives an average of one thousand,
two hundred visitors a day. The exhibits can be found in four exhibition galleries. They are the Lobby,
Physical Sciences, Life Sciences and Aviation. These exhibits are renewed annually so as to encourage
visitors to make return visits to the centre.

Instead of the usual “Hands off” notices found in exhibition halls, visitors are invited to touch and
feel the exhibits, push the buttons, turn the cranks or pedals. This is an interesting way to learn science
even if you hate the subject. A Discovery Centre was built for children between the ages of three and
twelve. This new exhibition gallery was completed in 1985. Lately this year a stone-age exhibit was built.
It shows us about the animals and people which are extinct.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A,B,C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct word
and phrase that best fits each of the numbered blanks from 31 to 35.

WAYS OF SOCIALIZING

To attract someone’s attention so that we (23)…….. speak to that person, we can use either verbal or non-verbal
forms of communication. Let us look at non-verbal communication in English. Probably the (32)…….. common

way of attracting someone’s attention is by waving. For example, if we are at a noisy party and see a friend come in
the door about 20 metres away, we might raise our hand and wave to her as a signal that we see her.

But how hard can we wave in a situation like this? Suppose you are (33)… …. the airport, and you see your brother
get off the plane and begin walking toward you. If you are excited, you might jump up and down and wave as hard
as you can …(34)…… his attention. This is the instance where big, obvious non-verbal signals are appropriate.
There are, however, some social situations where smaller non-verbal signals are more appropriate. In a restaurant,
for example, if we want to attract the (35)………….of our waiter, we have several choices. We can wait until he
passes near us, catch his eye, and nod slightly to let him know we would like him to come to our table. Or we can
raise our hand slightly to show that we need assistance. We do not whistle or clap our hands to get the person’s
attention. That is considered impolite and even rude.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A,B,C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer
to each of the numbered blanks from 43 to 50.

The principle of use and disuse states that those parts of organisms’ bodies that are used grown larger.

Those parts that are not tend to wither away. It is an observed fact that when you exercise particular muscles, they grow.
Those that are never used diminish. By examining a man's body, we can tell which muscles he uses and which he doesn't. We
may even be able to guess his profession or his reaction. Enthusiasts of the "body- building" cult make use of the principle of
use and disuse to "build" their bodies, almost like a piece of sculpture, into whatever unnatural shape is demanded by fashion in
this peculiar minority culture. Muscles are not the only parts of the body that respond to use in this kind of way. Walk barefoot
and you acquire harder skin on your soles. It is easy to tell a farmer from a bank teller by looking at their hands alone. The
farmer's hands are horny, hardened by long exposure to rough work. The teller's hands are relatively soft.

The principle of use and disuse enables animals to become better at the job of surviving in their world, progressively
better during their lifetime as a result of living in that world. Humans, through direct exposure to sunlight, or lack of it, develop
a skin color which equips them better to survive in the particular local conditions.

Too much sunlight is dangerous. Enthusiastic sunbathers with very fair skins are susceptible to skin cancer. Too little
sunlight, on the other hand, leads to vitamin-D deficiency and rickets. The brown pigment melanin which is synthesized under
the influence of sunlight, makes a screen to protect the underlying tissues from the harmful effects of further sunlight. If a
suntanned person moves to a less sunny climate, the melanin disappears, and the body is able to benefit from what little sun
there is. This can be represented as an instance of the principle of use and disuse: skin goes brown when it is "used", and fades
to white when it is not.

Question 28:What does the passage mainly discuss?

A. How the principles of use and disuse change people's concepts of themselves.
B. The changes that occur according to the principle of use and disuse.

C. The way in which people change themselves to conform to fashion.
D. The effects of the sun on the principle of use and disuse.

A geyser is the result of underground water under the combined conditions of high temperatures
and increased pressure beneath the surface of the each. Since temperatue rises approximately one degree F
for every sixty feet under the earth’s surface, and pressure increases with depth, water that seeps down in
crachs and fissures until it reaches very hot rocks in the earth’s interior becomes heated to a temperatue in
excess of 290 degrees F. Because of the gressure, it shoots out of the surface in the form of steam and hot
water. The result is a geyser.

For the most part, geysers are located in three regions of the world : New Zealend, Iceland, and the
YellowstoneNational Park area of the United States. The most famous geyser in the world is Old Faithful
in YellowstonePark. Old Faithful erupts almost every hour, rising to a height of 125 to 170 feet and
expelling more then ten thousand gallons during each eruption

Read the following passage and choose the best answer. Circle A, B, C or D.

Because of the severe drought which has continued this year, water rationing will go into effect on
Monday. Lawns can not be watered with automatic sprinklers; driveways, porches and decks can not be
hosed down. You may water by hand, but not only on even-numbered days. Cars can be washed on
Wednesday only. The city has hired a new drought patrol crew, which will be looking for offenders. If
you are caught, there will be a $50 fine for the first offence and a $100 fine for the second offence. We
realize that this is strict, but the drought has affected us dramatically. We ask your co-operation in
conserving water.

Besides the drought rules, we ask that you be prudent in your house-hold water use. Turn off the
faucet while you brush your teeth. Take short showers; you might even consider turning off the water as
you soap up. Don’t wash dishes under running water, and when you wash your clothes, save the final
rinse water to begin your next load. Let’s all work together to save our community’s water.
