III. READ THE PASSAGE AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS(6ms).

Wedding is very important to Vietnamese. Thus, it is usually including a few formal
celebrations. The wedding day is usually chosen well in advance by the groom and the bride’s
parents.

On the wedding day, the groom’s family and relatives go to the bride’s house bringing a lot
of gifts wrapped in red papers. These gifts are similar to those of the engagement: betel (cây trầu
không) leaves an areca (cây cau), wines, fruits, cakes, tea... The parents will give the newly wedded

value gifts such as golden bracelets (vòng tay), ear rings, necklace (chuỗi hạt (vàng, ngọc). Those
who hold trays are also carefully chosen, usually they are happily married couples. Ladies and
women are all dressed in Ao dai. Men could be in their suits or men traditional Ao Dai.

A wedding party is scheduled in the evening at a hotel or a big restaurant. It is always a
delight feast that all relatives, friends, and neighbors are invited. A music band is usually hired to
play live songs. During the reception, the groom, bride, and their parents will stop by each table to
say thank to their guests. The guest in return, will give envelopes containing wedding cards and
money gifts to newly wedded couples a long with their blessing. The party does not recess until
very late at night. People wish the to-be-wed couples a blessing life together in the future.

In Britain, wedding invitations go out about six weeks before the wedding day. The guests reply as
soon as possible to say if they can come or not. Choosing a present for the couple can be difficult.

People don’t take their presents for the wedding. They send them to the woman’s house before the
wedding day. Most weddings take place before lunch or in the early afternoon. Many people like to
get married in church. The bride often wears a long white dress. Guests wear their best clothes and 
most of the women wear hats. In the church, the bride’s family sits on the left and the groom’s one
sits on the right.

Married people wear their wedding rings on the third finger of the left hand. Most married women
wear wedding rings, but married men often do not.
