Access Multiplexer System
The Soneplex Access Multiplexer System breaks the barrier between customer and
carrier networks by being the first to integrate LAN support into SONET access rings.
By using advanced SONET technology, the Soneplex AM System requires less space and
power while delivering services at a lower cost and higher reliability than conventional
SONET multiplexers. Centralized management provides network control for a high
quality subscriber-based service. Optimized for DS1, DS3, STS-1 and transparent LAN

service access, the Soneplex AM is ideal for SONET local loop applications.
The Soneplex AM System’s extremely compact design is suitable for rack, wallmount, or
cabinet enclosures, and the Micro, Standard and Extended chassis are fully compatible
with each other. Simply changing fiber interface cards allows for in-service upgrade
from OC-3 to OC-12 without taking down the network. Other features of the Soneplex
AM System include: card edge technology, removable connector cards, emergency
power feed, convection cooling, fiber spooling kit, front access, and full remote manage-
ment and provisioning capability.
Description
An XTD chassis is used at the central office to terminate DS1, DS3, or STS-1 high-speed
traffic. At a tenant high-rise building, a STD chassis is used to deliver data services.
Supporting 10Base-T or 100Base-T interfaces, the STD chassis is ideally suited for
Internet Service Providers. Optimized for wireless/PCS applications or small capacity
customer locations, the Micro offers both space and power efficiency for low-density DS1
service access.

Overview
The Soneplex AM System provides a broad range of service access options over fiber,
with significantly more capacity than standard point-to-point multiplexers. The product
line offers advanced SONET OC-3/OC-12 add/drop multiplexer capabilities in a modular,
flexible, and upgradeable package. Three models support DS1, DS3, and STS-1 deploy-
ment over SONET path protected rings. The ring configuration permits multi-customer
support at significantly lower cost than point-to-point implementations. The three
models are interoperable and meet small-, medium-, and large-scale service require-
ments. The central office is typically equipped with STD or XTD models, while customer
premises can be equipped with any of the three, depending on the user's requirement.
It's single-stage multiplexing architecture permits a simplified hardware design, greatly
reducing the number of components needed for implementation. Where a competitive
system would require many components such as CPU, mapper, STS-1 line, STS optical,
and STS shelf modules, the Soneplex AM System requires only a controller unit, an
optical interface module and a user interface module. The reduced module set provides
higher reliability and lower cost than existing multiplexers. The reliability of the
Soneplex AM System is the fault tolerant backplane, module backup with 1x7 and 1x3
protection, and fast recovery ring topology. Circuit recovery from a ring segment failure
is less than 50 milliseconds. The modular design permits flexible configuration, and
future upgrade to services like ATM, Ethernet and Fast Ethernet. Upgrade from OC-3 to
OC-12 requires a simple card swap and can be accomplished without service interrup-
tion.

All three models are extremely compact and cost-effective to deploy. Remote configura-
tion, provisioning, management, monitoring and software upgrade capabilities of all
models contribute to superior performance and reduced cost of support. All models use
the overhead SONET data communication channel (DCC) for communication between
nodes, and facilitating centralized management. The Soneplex AM is data communica-
tion channel tested by the SONET Interoperability Forum (SIF) allowing compatibility
with other vendors SONET network elements.
The Soneplex AM VUE Network Management and Provisioning System is the most
sophisticated SONET management tool on the market. It provides "point and
click" control, substantially reducing training and operations costs for both
service providers and users. The Soneplex AM VUE requires only a low cost
Microsoft Windows

desktop or portable PC platform, but is more powerful than
many workstation based solutions. It provides network provisioners and managers
the tools to ensure maximum service levels while minimizing operational support
costs.

The Soneplex AM Micro Chassis is the smallest SONET platform in the industry. It's a
size and cost-reduced package specifically designed for low density cabinet, PCS/Cellular
and customer premises applications. Fully compatible with the STD and XTD chassis, it
uses the same network management and user modules. The Micro is also available in a
wall mount version, featuring a lockable front security cover, AC/DC rectifier, a DSX
cross-connect panel and eight hours of battery reserve.

Access Multiplexer System
The Soneplex XTD chassis provides carriers with a cost-effective platform which allows
access to the full OC-3/OC-12 payload at central office or large customer buildings. The
XTD chassis is designed to be used either as a complete network solution or in conjunc-
tion with the other members of the Soneplex AM family.
