A/AN, THE AND ZERO ARTICLE 1


A/AN

We use “a/an” when:
 Describe a particular instance.
EX: When I woke up, there was a bright
blue sky.
I could see the bird fly in the sky.
 Define sth or say what is typical of a
particular class of people or things.
EX: A horse is a quadruped.
 Some especial nouns are used
counttably
EX: I don’t drink tea.
Would you like a tea.


THE
We usually use “the” when we talk about:
 Things which are unique.
EX: the sun the moon the environment
 General geographical areas.


EX: the land the beach the town
 Make generalisations about classes of things using
singular countable nouns.
EX: The computer has revolutionised publishing (in general)
but not
A computer has revolutionised publishing ( computer in
general have done this, not an individual computer.
 The+ singular countable noun.
EX: Computers are an important tool.
Note: When we use with plural and uncountable nouns, it is
a specific thing or group.
EX: The music was wonderful. I could have listened all night.


ZERO ARTICLE 1

 Some

nouns can be used with zero article to
refer to a concept in general:

EX:
♦ Climate is one of many factors involved in changing
farming methods. (or The climate…)
♦ These flowers grow best in sandy soil and sun.
(=sunshine)
