ASSIGNMENT ON CULTURAL COMMUNICATION (1)
Analyse the wedding ceremony in Viet Nam and in the United Kingdom to show
the similarities and the differences between them.
Assignment:
For a long time, there has always been a comparison between Eastern culture
and Western culture. Because these are two typical cultures in the world. And there
have been countless historians, philosophers, poets and celebrities who have spent
their whole lives pursuing and studying the differences between eastern and
western cultures. It was interesting as we researched the similarities and differences
between these two great cultures by learning about weddings in Viet Nam and
weddings in the United Kingdom.
Currently, the strong development of communication networks and cultural
interference between countries and cultures is happening faster and faster.
Therefore, I delve into the traditional wedding ceremony of two countries, Viet
Nam and the United Kingdom.
Content about the similarities between weddings in Viet Nam and the UK:
First, the wedding ceremony is conducted based on the voluntary love
between the bride and the groom, approved by friends, relatives and families of
both sides and especially guaranteed in accordance with marriage and family laws
in other countries.
Second, the wedding ceremony is solemnly held in accordance with the
traditional procedures and procedures such as marriage proposal, marriage

registration and a solemn wedding ceremony with many people attending to
congratulate and organize a celebration party traditional food. There is also a
wedding master to maintain the wedding, representatives of the two families.
Thirdly, the wedding ceremony has a noble meaning and wishes for happiness
of the bride and groom and their families, so there are a number of symbolic customs
about luck, happiness or points need to avoid bad luck, negligence, ect to bring a
perfect wedding that is the happiness after the wedding of a loving couple.
In general, the basic similarity is still the meaning that the wedding
ceremony is a symbol of love and happiness of the bride and groom. Formal
formalities and within the framework, traditional of their country.

The content is about the difference between getting married in Viet Nam and
the United Kingdom, showing the unique features of the two countries.
The first difference is that the culture in the wedding ceremony is influenced
by two different cultures because the Western and Eastern conceptions of different
conceptions through the legends or taboos in the wedding lead to difference for
other content.
In the United Kingdom avoid weddings on Fridays especially avoid Friday the
13th. Usually held on Saturday and June of the year so that the wedding gets more
sunshine, to bring more happiness. The bride often goes from the east to the west and
goes around the church. When the groom's family goes to pick up the bride to meet
the priest, the blind man, the pregnant woman, the wedding concept has a tragic
ending. On the contrary, when the groom's family meets a female goat, a dove, a dog,

it will bring good luck and happiness to the wedding. The bride leaves a coin in her
shoe on the wedding day to ensure her future prosperity.

In Viet Nam, the wedding ceremony must be chosen. The date and time are
suitable for the age of the bride and groom and the families of both sides, this creates a
happy luck. Especially abstaining from getting married in the year of golden age, that
is, the year when the bride has an age with the tails of 1, 3, 6, 8 to avoid risks in the
husband and wife relationship such as broken marriage, infertile children and
difficulties reared later. People who are in mourning cannot attend the wedding,
pregnant women should not go to the wedding to avoid bad luck and bad luck for the
owner. Or the wedding taboo when the two families are in mourning. Taboo the
brokenness in the wedding such as glasses, bowls and other items... signifying the
breakup of the marriage in the family. The ancestral altar is also an expression of the
thoughtfulness of each family. Before the time to welcome the bride, both the groom's
family and the bride's family must prepare a tray of offerings to the ancestors
including the minimum items such as boiled chicken, sticky rice, wine, fruits, and
votive papers placed on the altar. When it's time to pick up the bride, the bride and
groom will join their parents on both sides to burn incense on the altar to report to the
ancestors. The main wedding ceremony must be held at the ancestral altar with enough
incense and fruits, if it is poorly organized, it will bring bad luck. There are also some
other taboos such as: Abstaining from people with heavy spirits. Not allowed to enter
the wedding room, Abstain from the bride not to cry or look back at her mother's

house after receiving the bride, abstain from the wedding ceremony without holding
an engagement ceremony, abstain from using the old bed as a wedding bed.

The next difference is the detailed procedure in the wedding ceremony.
In the United Kingdom, the wedding sequence is simpler, with a simple
marriage proposal being carried out in a number of weddings that are still preserved

today. Weddings are held more diversely in many places and are often associated
with synagogues, churches and banquets, the menu is also simple and not too
sophisticated. After the wedding ceremony, the bride goes to her husband's house
and also celebrates their own honeymoon.

Some United Kingdom wedding photos
In Viet Nam, the wedding ceremony sequence has more steps, more elaborate and
more rules, especially ancestor worship. Starting with the wedding ceremony, which is
agreed by the bride's family, the groom's family brings the ceremony. Must have offerings
are betel nut, areca, wine, tea, cake, candy, drinking water, etc. The offerings are offered

to the ancestors' altars. After that, the groom's family will bring back the part of the
ceremony that the girl's family has saved, which is called kickback. Next is an
engagement ceremony. Any girl who has received the name-calling ceremony is
considered to have a place and a place. After the wedding ceremony, there must be a
report of joy and distribution of betel nut. The bride's family extracts from the groom's
family a betel leaf, a areca nut, a small tea packet, a cake of nuggets or a few seeds of jam.
All are wrapped in pink paper boxes or envelopes, brought to the family, relatives and
friends of the bride's family. The groom's family also reported the joy, but not with this
gift, but just a greeting card. Also in the engagement ceremony, the two of them set a
wedding date. Most importantly, the wedding ceremony is held at the groom's house, Vu
Quy is held at the girl's house. In the marriage ceremony, there are many other rituals such
as the ceremony. Loading up is the day when the groom's family brings the bride's
wedding to the bride's house to receive the bride. Bride's request ceremony, before the
bridegroom's arrival time, the groom's family sends someone to bring betel nut and wine
to ask for the bride casket to pick up the bride. Bride procession, the bridegroom's bride
procession goes in a group, with an old man holding incense ahead, along with the person
bringing the gift. The bride and the groom bow in front of the altar, presented to ancestors.
In addition, there are other formalities such as: bringing the bride into the house, red silk

ceremony, bedspread, proper ceremony, wedding party, ect

The next difference is the wedding dress, this is the most recognizable
difference between the two countries. In the United Kingdom, the bride wears a long
white wedding dress symbolizing her chastity, the veil protects the bride from evil

spirits often in the color of the wedding dress, wedding flowers, etc. Elegant and
luxurious suit. Even the bridesmaids and groomsmen are elegantly dressed similar to
the bride and groom. In Viet Nam, according to the Eastern tradition, the bride's
costume is usually a traditional red Ao Dai symbolizing good luck, embroidered
with phoenix images and special patterns, wearing a scarf on the head. The groom.
also wear ao dai and handkerchief with beautiful embroideries with ethnic sounds.
The bridesmaids and groomsmen also dress similarly.
Another point in the two-country wedding ceremony is the decoration of the
wedding venue and the party venue. In the United Kingdom, the ceremony is
usually held at a church, or a certain place, and the party is held at a restaurant,
guests. The hotel is luxurious and has light music or traditional music to dance for
guests, buffet food. In Viet Nam, it is often held in the family of the groom and the
girl's family, decorated with elaborate decorations from the outside. From the outside to
the inside, from the living room to the wedding room. Wedding celebration with a rich
menu and divided into trays, held in the yard of the bride and groom's house, with music
program and time organization longer. The bride and groom come to each table to
receive wishes and thank relatives near and far for coming to celebrate with their family.
