CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
1.1. Rationale
English is now recognized as a universal language, spoken by millions of people
around the world. Keshta (2000:1) states that "English is a universal language: the
language of communication among countries in the international world of trade,
business, communications, air transportation, and technology." In truth, large
multinational corporations communicate regularly between headquarters and
branches in English. Moreover, the importance of speaking the English language
stems from the fact that new trends of the whole institutions and organizations
stipulate speaking English language 3 fluently and communicating orally with
others as necessary requirements to get high-rank jobs in them. One of the goals is
to give a presentation in English. A successful presentation demands the mastery of
a wide range of skills and techniques. To achieve the presentation's overall goal, the
presenter must master tactics for determining the purpose, material, concept, and
organization so that the audience can follow along effortlessly. In particular, the
speaker's tone, pronunciation, or emphasis are all considerations. Making oral
presentations brings students a lot of benefits which are bridging the gap between
language study and language use, using the four language skills in a naturally
integrated way, helping students to collect, inquire, organize and construct
information, enhancing teamwork, and helping students become active and
autonomous learners. A language learner's ability to present in the target language is

dependent on several factors related to both their knowledge of the language

systems (grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation) and their personality traits such
as timidity or self-confidence. To get the best presentation result, students need to
master a wide range of skills and techniques such as the use of language, the way to
organize all ideas, the ability to speak clearly and confidently, and the use of body
language. Giving effective presentations is quite challenging for many second-year
English majors at Tay Do University. Although some students spend much time and
effort on their oral presentations, they do not get the intended outcomes. They have
a lot of ideas, but they do not perform well in the class to attract the audience's
attention. Other students try to get through the ordeal as quickly as possible, as the
result, their public speaking skills do not improve much. These problems are the
motivation for the researcher to carry out the study on factors affecting oral
presentations of the second-year English majors at Tay Do University
