of the oldest, had to help care for her younger siblings. Although she had much responsibility at

While still in high school, Jean met a young man named Charles "Chuck" Holly, at a dance in

Unfortunately, shortly thereafter, he was sent overseas to serve in Korea for the next fifteen months.
Upon his discharge, the couple settled into married life together in the Plainwell, Otsego area. To
help make ends meet, Jean went to work at the collection bureau in Kalamazoo for a while, before
taking a job at the cheese company in Otsego. In 1964, Chuck and Jean were overjoyed with the birth

Humans are bringing about another global-scale change in the atmosphere: the increase in what are

B. Read the following passage and mark the letter a, b, c, or d to indicate the correct answer to
each of the questions.
The most obvious advantage of living green is that it helps reduce environmental pollution. This is
done by practising the 3Rs. The first R means choosing products very carefully to reduce waste as
much as possible. Reusing involves the repeated use of items. The third R is about separating
materials that can be recycled and later used for a new purpose.
There are also economic benefits to living green. Reducing the use of energy and water can help save
money on household bills. Furthermore, reusing products and materials is another way to make
saving. It helps save on production costs since creating new products wastes materials and is
expensive. Recycled products also last longer than new ones, making them a better and more ecofriendly option.
Lastly, going green offers health benefits. It reduces air pollutants by making the air we breathe
cleaner and healthier. This means fewer diseases and doctor's appointments. Another way to improve
your health is to purchase organic foods and green products for your household. They don't use
harmful chemicals that can lead to health issues. In turn, you are also supporting responsible farming
methods that protect the environment.

B. Read the following passage and mark the letter a, b, c, or d to indicate the correct answer to
each of the questions.
Pollution is any contamination of the environment which causes harm to the environment or the
inhabitants of the environment. There are three main kinds of pollution. Air pollution can be caused
by liquids, or gases that make the air harmful to breathe. There are two main types of air pollution:
primary and secondary. Primary pollutants enter the air directly, like smoke from factories and car
exhaust. Secondary pollutants are chemicals that mix together to pollute the air, like mixtures of
emissions from vehicles and factory smoke that change to form more dangerous pollutants in the air
and sunlight. Soil pollution can be caused by pesticides, leakage from chemical tanks, oil spills, and
other chemicals which get into the soil by dumping or accidental contamination. Soil pollution can
also cause water pollution when underground water becomes contaminated by coming into contact
with the polluted soil. Water pollution can be caused by waste products, sewage, oil spills, and litter in
streams, rivers, lakes, and oceans. Some scientists believe that water pollution is the largest cause of
death and disease in the world, causing about 14,000 deaths in the world each day. It is not possible
for anyone to predict the exact timing and effects of global pollution and global climate change
brought about by pollution. There is general agreement by scientists that the global climate will
continue to change, the intensity of weather effects will continue to increase, and some species of
animals will become extinct.
