FORM SPEAKING LESSONS

Activity 1: Noughts and Crosses for Unit 1- Task 2 ( While-
speaking)
Type : Group work
Aims: Talk about daily activities
Teaching aids: Pictures of Task 2
Time: 10 minutes
Preparation: prepare pictures of Task 2, use magnets to hang on board
Procedure :
- Divide class into 2 teams
Team 1: Noughts Team B: Crosses
- Asks students to choose one picture in Task 2 to make a sentence about
Quan’s activities.
- If their sentence is correct, that picture will be marked with their Noughts
( O ) for team A or Crosses ( X ) for team B
- Do the same steps until one team has 3 continuous pictures in vertical,
horizontal or in cross line will be the winner
Activity 2: Matching for Unit 2-Task 1 ( Pre- speaking )
Type : Group work
Aims: Use common expressions in making small talks.
Teaching aids: 1 big sheet of paper and 10 pieces of expressions
Time : 5 minutes
Preparation: prepare a big sheet of paper with 10 movable pieces of
expressions which are put in random , use magnets to hang on board

Procedure :
- Three tables will be a group. So there will be 4 groups in total
- Students will discuss in groups to put sentences to the right columns
- The fastest group can go to the board and match
- Teacher will check and give the key
Activity 3: Interview for Unit 3- Task 2 ( While- speaking )
Type: Group work
Aims: Talk about people’s background
Teaching aids: interview form, magnets
Time : 10 minutes
Preparation: prepare an interview form, use magnets to hang on board

Procedure :
- Asks tudents to work in groups of three
- Rearrange students’s seat to make them sit face to face
- Asks them to use questions in interview form to ask and answer each other
- Teacher goes around and offer help if necessary
- Teacher can choose one student to go to the board and the whole class will
interview him/ her
- Teacher encourages students to make further questions for fun.
Activity 4: Survey for Unit 3- Task 2 ( While – speaking)

Type: Group work
Aims: Talk about school life
Teaching aids: Handouts
Time : 15 minutes
Preparation: Prepare handouts

Procedure :
- Ask to work in groups.
- Remind that one student need to ask at least 3 students in his/ her group
and it is not neccesary to ask every student all questions, then fill in the
table.
- Teacher goes around for help if neccesary, collect errors
- Call some students to report
- Teacher gives feed back and correct errors
Activity 5: Guessing for Unit 5- Task 1( Pre- speaking)
Type: Group work
Aims: Talk about the uses of modern inventions
Teaching aids: Nothing
Preparation: No preparation
Time : 7 minutes
Procedure:
- Divide class into 4 groups

- Ask each group to choose one modern invention
- They in turns guess the other groups’ objects by asking the question:
Is it used for + V-ing?
Is it used to + V infinitive ?
- After 3 questions being asked for each object the answer should come out.
Any groups who can guess correctly will get 5 points
- The group with higher point will be the winner
Activity 6: Giving advice for Unit 6- Task 2( While - speaking)
Type: Group work
Aims: Talk about the seat plan on a boat trip
Teaching aids: Cards and the seat plan in text book
Time : 10 minutes
Preparation: Prepare 6 cards
Card 1: Hello. My name is Mrs Andrew. I m going to a boat trip on Lake
Michigan in Chicago with my students. I need to see all the students but I do
not want to seat in the sundeck. Please help me to choose a suitable seat.
Thank you very much!
Card 2: Hello. My name is Susan . I m going to a boat trip on Lake Michigan
in Chicago with my classmates. I want to be near Mary. I do not want to get
suburnt.
Please help me to choose a suitable seat. Thank you very much!
Card 3: Hello. My name is Tim . I m going to a boat trip on Lake Michigan
in Chicago with my classmates. I like to sit in the sun ad I do not want to be
by myself. Please help me to choose a suitable seat. Thank you very much!
Card 4: Hello. My name is John . I m going to a boat trip on Lake Michigan
in Chicago with my classmates. I don’t like air- conditioning. I would like to
take photos. Please help me to choose a suitable seat. Thank you very much!
Card 5: Hello. My name is Mary . I m going to a boat trip on Lake Michigan
in Chicago with my classmates. I often suffer from travel sickness, so I need
plenty of fresh air. Please help me to choose a suitable seat. Thank you very

much!
Card 6: Hello. My name is Sam . I m going to a boat trip on Lake Michigan
in Chicago with my classmates. I hane never been in a boat before. I want a
good view. Please help me to choose a suitable seat. Thank you very much!
Procedure:
- Teacher sets context for the activity: You are school consultants. Some
people in Tim’s class send you a seat plan and ask for help.
- Ask to work in 6 groups. Ask each group choose one card then discuss and
give advice
- Teacher goes around for help if neccesary
- Ask each group to present
- Teacher marks the suitable seat for each person
Activity 7: Circle of common for Unit 7- Task 2( While - speaking)
Type: Pair work
Aims: Talk about the main features of the mass media
Teaching aids: A big sheet of paper, magnets
Preparation: Ask each pair prepare an A4 paper, and the teacher prepare a
big sheet of paper drawing 6 pairs of big circles
Time : 10 minutes
Procedure:
- Ask to work in pairs. Each pair will talk about the typical
features as well as the common features of two types of the mass media.
Then
with their typical features, students will write in 2 different circles, with the
same ones , students will write in the intersection.
- The fastest pairs will be the winner.
- Teacher can give feedback by asking the winner pairs to write their doing
on board and correct.

Activity 8: Drawing and Matching for Unit 8- Task 1( Pre- speaking)
Type: Group work
Aims: Talk about plans to improve life of a village and their possible results
Teaching aids: Some pieces of paper
Preparation: Prepare some sentences written on pieces of paper
Sentence 1: Widen the road
Sentence 2: Raise and resurface the roads
Sentence 3: Build a medical centre
Sentence 4: Build a football ground
Sentence 5: Grow cash crops
Sentence 6: Build a bridge over the canal
Sentence 7: Build a new school
Time : 7 minutes
Procedure:
- Divide class into 2 groups
- Ask each groups choose 1 student to the board to take one piece of paper
from teacher , then try to draw what is in the paper without saying anything
- One of the two groups very quickly choose one possible result and read out
loud. If they are right they will get 1 point
- Do the same steps until all sentences are drawn and all possible results are
read out loud
- The winner is the one with higher points
Activity 9: Story In A Bag for Unit 9 -Task 2 and Task 3 ( While

speaking )
Type: Group work
Aims: Talk about problems and give out solutions
Teaching aids: 6 small bags ( or envelopes)
Preparation: Write words relevant to the topic in Task 2 in some pieces of
paper. Each piece has one word and each group has one series of relevant
words
Series 1: beaches, plastic bags, glass, cigarette butts
Series 2: whales, sharks, food, medicine, products
Series 3: explosives, catch, fish, sea animals
Series 4: oil, spill, tankers
Time : From 15 to 18 minutes
Procedure:
- Divide class into 6 groups. Each group will be delivered with one bag
containing words
- Each group find one group leader so that every member will work more
effectively
- They have one minute to think about some threats to the environment
basing on their series of words. Then discuss about the bad results and give
some solutions
- After 10 or 12 minutes, teacher asks one student in each group reports. The
other students will listen, compare and take notes
Activity 10: Debate for Unit 10- Task 3 ( While - speaking)
Type: Group work
Aims: Talk about the new kind of zoo in comparison to the old one
Teaching aids: Nothing
Preparation: No preparation
Time : 10 minutes
Procedure:
- Divide class into 2 groups

Group 1: Choose the new kind of zoo
Group 2: Choose the old kind of zoo
- Teacher sets a context like this: She is a millionaire. She wants to invest a
big amount of money in building a zoo. But she hasn’t decided what kinds
of zoo to be built yet. Now try to convince her to invest in your choice
- Two groups will try to persuade teacher by talking about the advantages of
their zoo and disadvantages of the others’
- Teacher will finally decide which group speak better to invest money
Activity 11: Chain story for Unit 11- Task 3 ( While - speaking)
Type: Pair work and whole class
Aims: Tell a story about an excursion
Teaching aids: Handouts
Preparation: Prepare handouts: one for Nga and the other for Nga’s friend

Procedure:

- Ask to work in pairs first and give each pair 2 handouts: one for Nga and

- Each pair has to make a conversation based on the information in the
handouts
- After 6 to 8 minutes, call on students to make a story about Nga’s
excursion. Each student talks only one sentence. The other takes turn and
continues the story to the end pf the excursion story. If time is spare, make
another story about Nga’s excursion
Activity 12: Interview for Unit 12- Task 2 ( While - speaking)
Type: Group work
Aims: Ask and answer about music taste
Teaching aids: Pieces of paper
Time: 12 minutes
Preparation: Prepare some pieces of interview paper for all students :

Procedure:
- Divide class into small groups of three. One of them will be a journalist
who wants to interview high school students about their music taste. The
journalist has to ask 2 students some questions and fill in the table for his/
her later article.
- Students can change the role if time permits
- After 8 minutes of interviewing, the teacher calls on some groups to make
presentations on what they have done in their group

- Teacher give comments and corrects errors.
Activity 13: Film Reporter for Unit 13- Task 4 ( While- speaking)
Type: Group work
Aims : Talk about the film you have ever seen
Teaching aids: One big sheet of paper with questions about films
Time : 10 minutes
Preparation: One big sheet of paper with questions about films

4 Who is/ are the main character(s)?
5 How do you feel about it?
6 Why do you prefer it to other films?
Procedure:
- Divide class into 6 groups. Each group will choose a film reporter . This
student will go to the board . The others will discuss about films for him to
guess
- After 2 minutes the film reporter will guess the films by asking questions
For example :
Reporter : where did you see it?
Player 1 : On T.V
Reporter : What kind of film is it?
Player 2 : Tragic love story
Reporter: What is it about?
Player 3 : It is about the sinking of a luxury liner on its first voyage across
the Atlantic Ocean
Reporter: Who is/ are the main character(s)?
Player 4: Jack Dawson and Rose Dewitt Bukuter
Reporter: How do you feel about it?

Player 5: It's very exciting and romantic
Reporter: Why do you prefer it to other films?
Player 6: I like the main actor
- Then the film reporter will tell the whole class what films they are
- Do the same steps with the others groups
- Finally, teacher choose some representatives from some groups to talk
about their favourite film
Activity 14: Quiz for Unit 14- Task 1 ( While- speaking)
Type: Group work
Aims : Talk about football teams
Teaching aids: Pictures, cards
Preparation: Prepare some questions about the football teams and their
pictures, then write questions on different cards
Card 1: How many times has Italy won the trophy up to the World Cup
2006?
Card 2: Who was the captain of the French national team in the World Cup
2006?
Card 3: What was the score of the World Cup 2006 final?
Card 4: What place did Germany hold in the World Cup 2006?
Card 5: Who was the head coach of the German team in the World Cup
2006?
Card 6: What nationality was the top scorer in the World Cup 2006?
Card 7: Who was the captain of the English national football team in the
World Cup 2006?
Card 8: Who beat English in the World Cup 2006 quarter final ?
Procedure:
- Hang on the pictures of four football teams on the board and ask students
names of these teams
- Divide class into small teams of 5 students and introduce the quiz
- Distribute the cards to different groups and ask them to place the cards face

down on the desk
- Then in their own groups, students take turn to pick any card and answer
the question written on it. If it is correct, it should be put aside. If not, it can
be pick up again and answer by another students
- Finally teacher collects the answer of the groups
- Call some students to talk about the teams using the information they gain
via the quiz
- Which groups have more right answers will be the winner
Activity 15: Searching game for Unit 15- Task 4 (Post - speaking)
Type: Whole class
Aims : Ask and answer about the preferences s regard to where to live and
give reasons to back up their opinions
Teaching aids: copies of tables
Preparation: make copies for the table below:

Procedure:
- Get students to move around and interview s many other students as
possible about which city they prefer and why in a limited time
- Remind them to take notes while interviewing
