A. Objectives : By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
 Use words and phrases to talk about personal electronic devices.
 Pronounce three-syllable adjectives and verbs and use defining and
non-defining relative clauses with “who”, “that”, “which”, and
“whose”.

1. Vocabulary:
Task 1: Match each of the phrases on the left
with its explanation on the right.
Game: SLAP THE BOARD

Task 2: Read the conversation in Getting
started again. Match pictures A-C with their
uses as learning tools 1-6 mentioned below.

2. Pronunciation
Activity: Listen again, repeat and put a mark
(‘) before the stressed syllable.
3. Grammar – RELATIVE CLAUSE.
a. Introduce and explain the rule and the
use of Relative Clause.
 Relative Pronouns
E.g. 1. The girl, who greeted us when we
arrived, was my cousin.
2. The teacher whom I spoke to didn’t like me.
3. The movie which I saw last weekend was

excellent.
4. The car that I bought is red.
5. The student, whose mom just left, is my best
friend.
 Defining and non-defining relative
clauses
E.g.1 The giant panda, which lives in China,
eats bamboo. (non-defining relative clause)
E.g.1 The bear which lives in China eats
bamboo. (defining relative clause)

- Necessary
information
- Sentence has different
meaning without it.
- Commas mustn’t be
used
- That, which, who,
whom, whose can be
used.
- Extra information
- Sentence means the
same without it.
- Commas must be
used.
- THAT mustn’t be
used after comma.
Notes:
+ Relative pronouns of defining relative clause

at the same time.
- T elicits answers from Ss by
asking “which syllable is
stressed in this word?”
- T asks Ss to work
individually first, and then
check with a partner.
- T checks answers as a class
to make sure Ss have all the
correct answers.
- T shows examples on the
slide and asks ss to look at
them.
- T introduces the usage of
relative pronouns.

“who, whom, which, that” can be omitted when
they are objects of the verb.
+ But we can’t omit:
a. Relative pronouns after a comma (in a non
-defining relative clause).
E.g. Dam Vinh Hung, who sings very well, is a
famous singer.

b. Relative pronouns after a preposition.
E.g. The house in which he lives is very old.
c. “Who, which, that” as a subject.
E.g. The diamond ring which/ that is bought by
Mary is expensive.
b. Practice:
Activity 1: Task 1: Read the following
sentences from Getting Started. Decide if the
clauses are defining or non-defining relative
clauses.

Activity 3: LUCKY NUMBERS
Combine the following sentences, using
a relative clause
1. Beckham is a famous footballer. I met him
on T.V yesterday.
 Beckham, whom I met on T.V yesterday, is
a famous footballer
2. The dictionary is very useful. It has 205,000
words.
 The dictionary which/that has 205,000
