THE PROVERBS
Don't make a mountain … OUT OF A MOLEHILL.
Do not make a big fuss over (=problem out of) something small
To err is human, … TO FORGIVE DIVINE.
It is only natural for someone to make mistakes, but for one to forgive another for
his mistake is a great act (=thing to do).
A bird in hand … IS WORTH TWO IN THE BUSH.
It is better to have something that is certain than take a risk to get more, where you
might lose everything.
An apple a day … KEEPS THE DOCTOR AWAY.
It means that apples are so nutritious (=healthy) they keep you in the peak of
health.
Rome was not … BUILT IN A DAY.
Any great plan or big dream cannot be achieved (=done) overnight (=in one night)
or easily.
Don't count your chickens … BEFORE THEY ARE HATCHED.
You should not plan on everything going exactly as you expected until you see the
results for yourself.
Don't judge a book … BY ITS COVER.
Do not be deceived (=cheated) by appearances (=what you can see on the surface).
As you sow, … SO YOU SHALL REAP.
One will either enjoy or suffer the consequences (=results) of his earlier actions or

inactions (=not doing anything).
When the cat is away … THE MICE WILL PLAY.
When law enforcers (=the police) are not present, certain individuals will take the
opportunity to break the law.
A penny saved … IS A PENNY GAINED.
By being thrifty (=saving up) one will be able to save up and get ahead (=improve
one’s life).
