Listening and Speaking about traditions and customs
A. Aims and Objectives:
- To teach Ss to talk about superstitions in different countries.
- To teach Ss to compare traditions and customs in two countries and discuss those in Vietnam.
- To teach Ss to practise sharing and giving responses to new information.
- By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
+ Express their opinion about superstitions in different countries.
+ Compare traditions and customs in two countries and discuss those in Vietnam.
+ Perform their viewpoints to other people in real life.
B. Preparations:
- Teacher: Handouts, textbook, pieces of papers.
- Students: Textbook
C. Methods: - The whole lesson: Integrated, mainly communicative.
D. Procedures:
Time

1. Warm up
8 minutes

Teacher’s activities
- Ask Ss to look at the pictures and elicit any words related to the
topic

Sts’ activities
- Do the task

*Expected answer:
+ Pic 1: Superstitions about black cats,
+ Pic 2: samovar – a traditional way of making tea.
+ Pic 3: skating – a national sport
+ Pic 4: fish and chips – a traditional food, figure



2. New lesson

Activity 1:
- Do the task

15 minutes

- Tell Ss that they will do a quiz about two countries: the UK and
Russia. Elicit any background knowledge about cultural aspects
of these two countries.
- Ask Ss to do the quiz individually and then check their answers

- Do the task


in pairs. Encourage Ss to explain their choice

Activity 2:
- Divide the whole class into two big teams of equal number of

members: Team A and Team B

- Work in groups
- Do the task

- Each team (then further divided into smaller groups) will read
about one country, either the UK or Russia.
- Set a time limit for this activity and walk around the classroom
to monitor, facilitate and assist Ss when necessary.
- Have Ss note down the most interesting things about the
country that they read and then share the information with
other members of their group.
- Encourage them to use the superlative adjectives
- Call several groups at random to report their viewpoints
